Erie PA News and Events for Friday August 11, 2006

Posted by Dennis on August 11, 2006
Knox Mclaughlin Gornall And Sennett is buying the former United Way of Erie County building on the 100 block of West 10th Street. I heard on the news Knox will tear down the building for parking. The building has an asesed value of $600,100. The United Way is exempt from paying property taxes. Knox isn’t. It’s too bad that number couldn’t have been added to the tax rolls but with a severe parking shortage in the downtown area I can understand.

The Steak n Shake Company (NYSE: SNS) officially announced they have approved Erie PA as a new franchise area. Scott Enterprises will open 4 restaurants in the area. Kind of old news since the Peach Street locations is supposed to open in a couple of weeks. As of July 2006, there were 469 Steak n Shake restaurants operating in 20 states, including 415 Company-owned restaurants and 54 franchised units.

The National Fuel Gas Company Contributions Program will donate $25,000 to ‘The Power To Transform Comprehensive Campaign’ at Gannon University over the next five years. National Fuel’s gift will help fund renovations to Zurn Science Center, located on the heart of Gannon’s Campus, 143 West 7th St. Extensive enhancements and a reconfiguration of the interior space will transform the building into a state-of-the-art facility to support Gannon’s science and engineering programs. Gannon University launched the public phase of The Power To Transform Comprehensive Campaign on May 11, 2006. To date, the University has raised $16,328,121 or 54 percent of the $30 million Campaign goal. Of that $30 million goal, $9.5 is earmarked to renovate the 30-year-old Zurn Science Center.

Where's the Steak and Shake going on Upper Peach?

I avoid that place like the plague...

I've said it before and I'll say it again, there isn't a parking problem in downtown Erie...there's a walking problem.

Don't know how many of your readers know that the United Way building on W. 10th was the home of the Erie Times newspaper in the 1950s, before the Mead family bought out the Erie Dispatch and moved to the rival newspaper's larger building at E. 12th and French. I remember visiting that place as a little kid with my dad, city solicitor (later Judge) Gerald Weber. An old fashioned newspaper office, straight out of "The Front Page".

Parking problem? Erie? You have got to be kidding. Want to see a parking problem, come to Pittsburgh, where I live now. I work downtown and it is a nightmare. Mostly I ride the bus.

I got a kick out of seeing Ed Beck's name for the model rocketry class. He was my fifth grade teacher a million and a half years ago at Chestnut Hill. That was one of the best years of my school life. Thanks for bringing back such good memories.

To one thing to expect a student at Gannon or Toni and Guy to walk a couple of blocks, it's another to expect a client or a customer to be inconvenienced.

The Steak n Shake is by Applebee's and the Courtyard by Marriott.

It's DOWNTOWN. Everyone (students, workers, patrons) should expect to have to walk a block or two.

Posted by: Emma at August 12, 2006 11:15 AM

Any business that expects people to walk a block should expect a decline in business.
I know we're talking about Erie which is reluctant to any sort of change but the preferred medthod of transportation these days is the automoble. Unless the place has parking, I'm going somewhere else.

At least you admit you're lazy. LMAO Fortunately for places like The Plymouth, Jr.'s, Pufferbelly, etc., not everyone feels the same way.
