Former WJET-TV anchor Amanda Barren will start anchoring a new weekend 10 pm show in September on WSAZ. Amanda joined the WSAZ Charleston WV team in January of 2006. She passed along word that she misses Erie and the friends she made here.

The
US Brig Niagara was featured on the Weather Channel over the weekend in a story on the tall ships in Chicago. The Niagara sailed to Chicago last week. The US Brig Niagara is on a tour of Great Lakes ports until the end of August.

EmergyCare/LifeStar, an ambulance and air medical transport company based in Erie, Pennsylvania recently took delivery of their first EC145 at a ceremony held at American Eurocopter headquarters in Grand Prairie, Texas. EmergyCare operates LifeStar as one of its divisions. “We’re uniquely positioned along the shores of Lake Erie, so we’re able to provide service to a three-state area,” said Richard “Dick” Gibbons, president and CEO of EmergyCare. LifeStar’s commenced Air Medical Transport Operations as a supplement to their ground service in 1985. CJ Systems Aviation will provide pilot, maintenance and management services for the LifeStar EC145. The helicopter will first go Metro Aviation in Shreveport, Louisiana to be equipped for EMS service. After completion, LifeStar’s new EC145 is expected to enter service in the fourth quarter of this year.
Josh Groban was in Erie last week. No idea why. I don’t think he performed a concert anywhere in the area.

A few days ago I asked if anyone had been to the
Mi Scuzi Restaurant at 27th and Myrtle. It’s the Italian restaurant owned by Barry Grossman, Rick Scalise and others. Of course the person I heard from is a former Erie resident who went to the restaurant while visiting Erie. Bill Kowalski said it’s an “authentic Italian Restaurant.” He loved the place - “highly recommended.” Take a break from the chains and give a local place a try.
Congrats to Erica and Alan who were married over the weekend.
Geno Espineli hurled six innings of one-run baseball, helping the Defenders to their fifth win in a row with a 5-1 win over the the Erie SeaWolves Sunday. Erie returns home on Tuesday with a buck night game at 7:05 pm.
Greg Wisser has been named assistant coach for the Plattsburgh State track and field and volleyball programs. Wisser earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and economics from Allegheny College in Meadville, Pa.

The
Erie Otters of the Ontario Hockey League announced a list of local individuals who will be honored at the Otters Champions for Education Dinner being held on Sunday, August 27th at the Bel-Aire Hotel and Conference Center. The Dinner kicks off the Otters Champions for Education Weekend which concludes on Monday, August 28th with the Champions for Education Golf Tournament being held at the Chautauqua Golf Club. The team opens it’s weeklong Training Camp later that evening at the Jamestown Savings Bank Ice Arena. This year’s honorees include: - Excellence in Education - Dr. Frank Pogue, President, Edinboro University - Distinguished Educational Service - Judy van Rheenen, Adult Enrollment Advisor, Gannon University - Coach of the Year - Jim Wells, General McLane Head Football Coach - Coach of the Year - Joe Lunger, Villa Maria Softball Head Coach - Coach of the Year - Sheila Bancroft, Maplewood Boys and Girls Volleyball Coach - Adopt-a-School Teacher of ther Year - Elaine Shaddock, Northwestern School District - Erie Youth Hockey Association Coach of the Year - Nick Surkala. A limited number of tickets remain available for Dinner, which includes all returning members of the Otters as well as other special guests. The weekly Monday classic and antique car cruise-in produced by Lake Erie Car Classics Club takes place on the West bayfront in the Park and Ride Lot by Liberty Park.
The Dave Stevens Big Band is this weeks performer on August 15 at 8 Great Tuedays. Eight Great Tuesdays is the free concert series at the Pepsi Amphitheater in Liberty Park.
Family First Sports Park is hosting the 2006 Hoops Classic 3-on-3 Streetball Tournament on Saturday August 18.
Celebrate Erie takes place Aug 18-20 in downtown Erie. The Clarks, Seven Mary Three, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Povertyneck Hillbillies and the Beach Boys are a few of the musical acts. This event was formerly called ‘We Love Erie Days.’ It’s been 5 years since the name change.

The 4th Annual Erie SeaWolves Family Fun Run/Walk for Epilepsy will be held Saturday morning August 19. Proceeds of the event will benefit the
Epilepsy Foundation Western/Central Pennsylvania.
The 2006 Hamot 10k Mayor’s Cup and 5K Walk/Run takes place on Sunday August 20.
The 10th annual Erie German Heritage Festival will be held September 2-3, 2006 from 11-8 daily at St Nick’s Grove, 5131 Old French Road (Route 97).

Erie’s last blast of summer, the second annual
Erie Heritage Festival, featuring a special Erie Philharmonic Pops concert on the Bay, will be held on Saturday, September 9, at Liberty Park’s Pepsi Amphitheater.
Former Mecyhurst College basketball great Brent Swain is organizing a Mercyhurst Laker Alumni Basketball Game which is scheduled for September 9 at 7 pm in the Mercyhurst Athletics Center (MAC)..
