The US News and World Report just released their 2007 America’s Best Colleges guide. Allegheny College was ranked 82nd in the Top National Liberal Arts Colleges, up from 88th last year. In the Northern Universities, Masters category for institutions that provide a full range of undergraduate and master’s programs, Gannon University is ranked 40th overall, down from 37th in 2006 while Penn State Erie, The Behrend College is ranked 46th, up from 62nd last year. Mercyhurst College was ranked 14th in the Comprehensive Colleges, Bachelor’s North category, down from 10th last year.
Take a break from the summer heat and step into the cool museum atmosphere of the Erie Art Museum during Celebrate Erie 2006. To coincide with the downtown festival the Erie Art Museum will offer free admission to all galleries from Friday, August 18 to Sunday, August 20 during regular Museum hours. The Erie Art Museum is open Friday and Saturday 11 am to 5 pm and Sunday 1 to 5 pm.

New Britain beat the Erie SeaWolves 12-4. The SeaWolves take on the Connecticut Defenders at 7:05 PM. Both teams will be wearing Erie Pontiac uniforms to celebrate Negro League Appreciation Day. The first 1,000 fans to enter the gates will receive a Lithograph of Erie Legend Sam Jethroe drawn by local sports artist Kevin-John Jobczynski sponsored by Rick Weaver Pontiac, Buick, and GMC Truck. The fun starts at 5 pm with a pre-game kids fest and deck party where the local rock band the “Earthquakers” will be playing until the start of the game. Stick around after the game for another Earthquakers set and $2.50 Corona and Corona Light bottles.
It’s Erie GE Federal Credit Union Night at the Races at Lake Erie Speedway. Racing will be: Plyler Overhead Door Late Models, Twin Advance Auto Parts Super Stock Features, Pepsi Legends, Bandoleros, Jensen�s Target Collision Figure 8�s, Krazy Kompacts and Spectator Drags. Gates open at 5:30 pm and racing begins at 7:30 pm.
The Erie Otters signed a 3 year lease with the Erie Convention Center Authority. There is an option for an additional 3 years. The Otters will also be getting a new video scoreboard.
“That Thing You Do” will be shown tonight at the Guelcher Film Series at the Lake Erie Arboretum at Frontier Park, aka Free Movies in the Park. It starts at 9 pm.
“Class is in Session” starring Mary Alice Brown is playing the The Roadhouse Theatre Fridays and Saturdays through August 26.
“West Side Story” is David Matthew’s final production as Managing Director of the Erie Playhouse. The production runs until runs until Sunday, August 20. For ino and tickets call 814-454-2852 ext 0.
The United We Stand Theater Troupe production of “Dreamgirls!” runs until Sunday, August 20 at the Metroplex on Buffalo Road. Showtimes are 7 pm, and 3 pm for the Sunday matinees. Ticket price of $15 includes a buffet dinner one hour before the show.
Family First Sports Park is hosting the 2006 Hoops Classic 3-on-3 Streetball Tournament on Saturday August 18.

The 2006 Hamot 10k Mayor’s Cup and 5K Walk/Run takes place on Sunday August 20.
The 10th annual Erie German Heritage Festival will be held September 2-3, 2006 from 11-8 daily at St Nick’s Grove, 5131 Old French Road (Route 97).

Former Mecyhurst College basketball great Brent Swain is organizing a Mercyhurst Laker Alumni Basketball Game which is scheduled for September 9 at 7 pm in the Mercyhurst Athletics Center (MAC)..
Barbara Hurd will open the 2006 Creative Writer’s Speaker Series at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, with a reading on Thursday, Sept 14. Hurd’s reading will begin at 6 pm in the worship space of the Smith Chapel. A reception for her at 4:30 pm in the chapel living room will precede her appearance; both are free and open to the public. Hurd is the author of two literary nonfiction books, Stirring the Mud: On Swamps, Bogs, and Human Imagination, which was named a Los Angeles Times Best Book of 2001, and Entering the Stone: On Caves and Feeling Through the Dark, and a book of poetry, Objects in This Mirror.
