Jury selection begins Monday in Meadville in the case of the parents of Charles Mahoney against Allegheny College. Mahoney committed suicide in his fraternity house in 2002 after 2 1/2 at the school. Mahoney had been hospitalized once and was under the care of doctors. The case boils down to a privacy issue. Should the school have broken the law known as the 1974 Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, which prohibits colleges from releasing information about their students without student permission, and let the parents know what has happening. Every college in the country will be following the case.
A 25 year old Erie woman, the name has not been released, was arrested in North Dakota along with a co-worker for leading a group of college kids illegally selling magazine subscriptions door to door. Parrell Grossman, director of the state attorney general’s consumer protection division, said neither women had a state transient merchant license and a city license. The two women were arrested in when they tried to cash checks written to “Cash,” which is how they told many of the customers to write the checks.

David Reel recently completed a general surgical residency at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of the New Jersey School of Osteopathic Medicine. He received a doctorate in osteopathic medicine from Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) in Erie. He is a captain in the US Air Force serving at Mountain Home AFB, Idaho.

Eulogio De La Cruz threw seven innings of shutout ball as the Erie SeaWolves shout out the Connecticut Defenders 7-0 Saturday night at Jerry Uht Park. The SeaWolves take on the Connecticut Defenders in Erie at 1:05 pm on a Wendy’s Family Day. Gates open at noon and the first 1,000 fans to enter the ballpark will receive a SeaWolves Team Photograph along with a special pre-game autograph session for all fans until 12:30. Nevada Smith, former assistant men’s basketball coach at Allegheny College, has been named an assistant men’s basketball and softball coach at Ithaca College.
Steve Szabo is the new linebackers coach for Michigan. He spent the last dozen years coaching in the NFL with Jacksonville, New England and Buffalo. Szabo was head coach at Edinboro from 1985 to 1987.
Yvette Sparks has joined the women’s basketball staff at Belmont University. She was an assistant at Edinboro last year.
The Erie Pennsylvania Sport Fishing Association held their Walleye and Steelhead Pro-Am Team Tournament last weekend, Aug 12 and 13. A field of 34 boats, 14 in the professional division and 20 on the amateur side, were entered to compete for a total purse of more than $20,000 in cash and prizes. Overall, 761 walleyes and steelhead were brought to the scales, weighing a total of 2,504.49 pounds. The largest walleye was 10.19 pounds while the largest steelhead tipped the scales at 12.36 pounds.
The 2006 Hamot 10k Mayor’s Cup and 5K Walk/Run takes place today, Sunday August 20.
Erie Hunt and Saddle Club Horse Trials are being held in the Erie area this weekend.
Rohrer Trucking will sponsor events at Eriez Speedway Sunday featuring an Outlaw Cadet King of the Hill along with regular racing in all divisions. The King of the Hill for the Cadets is a series of single elimination match races which will be used to establish the feature starting positions. Gates will open at 4:30 pm with racing starting promptly at 6 pm.
The United We Stand Theater Troupe production of “Dreamgirls!” runs until Sunday, August 20 at the Metroplex on Buffalo Road. Showtimes are 7 pm, and 3 pm for the Sunday matinees. Ticket price of $15 includes a buffet dinner one hour before the show.

Former Mecyhurst College basketball great Brent Swain is organizing a Mercyhurst Laker Alumni Basketball Game which is scheduled for September 9 at 7 pm in the Mercyhurst Athletics Center (MAC)..
Barbara Hurd will open the 2006 Creative Writer’s Speaker Series at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, with a reading on Thursday, Sept 14. Hurd’s reading will begin at 6 pm in the worship space of the Smith Chapel. A reception for her at 4:30 pm in the chapel living room will precede her appearance; both are free and open to the public. Hurd is the author of two literary nonfiction books, Stirring the Mud: On Swamps, Bogs, and Human Imagination, which was named a Los Angeles Times Best Book of 2001, and Entering the Stone: On Caves and Feeling Through the Dark, and a book of poetry, Objects in This Mirror.
The Scions Of Britain Car Club (the SOB’s) will hold their 14th annual ‘All British Car Gathering’ meet at the Gazebo Park in Waterford, Pa, about 12 miles South of Erie, on September 17 from noon to 4 pm The event is informal - no vendors, no judging, no fee - drive it, drag it, or just talk about it kind of event.
