Open up your wallet. Erie County Council wants to spend more of your money. Erie County Public Safety Director Joseph Weindorf wants to hire 4 new employees for the new $14 million public safety building. The idea of the building was to consolidate county public safety operations. In most of the know universe, consolidate and expand are not synonyms. But the Erie County wants to consolidate operations and actually expand the number of people needed. The four new personnel will cost over $115,000 in base pay the first year. The county never even consider an existing, vacant building when they planned the new public safety building which would have cost of fraction of the price of a new facility in the suburbs.
A couple of the beaches at Presque Isle State Park will be closed for the rest of the season due to a lifeguard shortage. Many of the lifeguard hired are college students who have gone back to school.If you’re a college student in the Erie area (Gannon, Mercyhurst, Behrend, Edinboro) that will be staying in Erie next summer, consider being a lifeguard at the park so we can keep the beaches open. Applicants must obtain lifeguarding, first aid, and CPR certificates before employment starts in May. Pay begins at $10.20/hr. Applications will be available at the Tom Ridge Environmental Center in March.
CNB Financial Corporation announced the opening of the first office of Erie Bank on Monday, August 21, 2006, located at 7200 Peach Street, Summit Towne Center in Erie, Pennsylvania. This full service office will serve as a temporary location until the completion of its four planned offices, which is expected to occur within the next two years. In addition to this new full service office, Erie Bank offers a Private Banking Division, now located at 1001 State Street in Erie in the Renaissance Centre.

Auditions for “What the Bellhop Saw” will be held Monday, August 28th and Tuesday, August 29th. The full length play is a zany and whimsical farce that requires a large cast. All ages are encouraged to audition, as roles vary and include parts for one young child and several teen/20-somethings. Auditions are at 7 p.m. at the North East Cultural Center on Vine Street in North East, PA. “What the Bellhop Saw” is directed by Chris Bucci. To help businesses and communities seize the opportunities provided by the Route 6 Initiative, the PA Route 6 Heritage Corp is announcing its inaugural workshop, “Route 6: Road to Success.” The workshop will run from 8 am to 3 pm at Edinboro University on Sept 7. The cost of the workshop is $30, which includes lunch and a copy of Roger Brooks book “The 25 Immutable Rules of Successful Tourism.” Registration forms can be found here.

The Wheeling Nailers announce that all-star goaltender Andy Franck has signed a qualifying offer. As per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed. He had 33 wins and a 2.28 gga in his rookie season for Wheeling. Franck played college hockey at Mercyhurst.
Wittenberg announced that Craig Penney has been named the university’s new men’s and women’s cross country and track and field head coach. Penney is a graduate of Edinboro.
Former Erie SeaWolves starting pitcher Justin Verlander is expected to be on the cover of the next issue of Sports Illustrated.
The Utah Grizzlies announced that they have hired former Fresno Falcons head coach Greg Spenrath as assistant coach. He began his professional career in the ECHL. He had 751 penalty minutes in 2 seasons with the Erie Panthers in the early 90’s. He was a great goon.
Have a friendly dog? Try the Dog Days of Summer: Hikes for you and your pooch. Parade your pup around the park and learn a little, too. This hike is designed for dogs and their people. Pups will get to socialize, and people will pick up a little natural history knowledge about the many aspects of the peninsula. Some weeks will include topics relating to pets, like their wild canine cousins and more. No fee, no registration. Meet at the Presque Isle State Park Stull Interpretive Center parking lot on Thursday, August 24 at 6 pm.
The Princess Bride (1987) is this weeks FREE outdoor movie for the Guelcher Film Series at the Lake Erie Arboretum at Frontier Park on Friday August 25 at 9 pm. Bring a blanket or a chair to sit on and join 1,000 of your friends for a fun family friendly evening for a movie in the park.
Zabawa, the Erie Polish Heritage Festival, will be held Aug. 25-27 at Holy Trinity at East 23 and Reed streets. Hours are Friday from 5 to 10 pm, Saturday from 1 to 10:30 pm, and Sunday from Noon to 6 pm. There is no website. Insert Polish joke here.

Come enjoy beautiful Presque Isle State Park, and join us in bringing the summer to an end with this one-of-a-kind kayak and canoe fundraising event called Paddle Erie 2006 to benefit the March of Dimes. On August 26, participants will launch their canoes/kayaks from Lagoon Boat Launch and paddle either an advanced course or a beginner course. The 10 mile advanced course begins at 8 am and is approximately four hours fours; the 4 mile beginner course is approximately two hours and starts at 10 am. Paddlers must pre-register and raise a minimum of $50. Special incentives are available based on the amount a participant raises. The top three fundraisers will receive additional prizes. Children 12 and under are free to participate if accompanied by a parent or guardian. ALL paddlers MUST wear a personal flotation device. Barbara Hurd will open the 2006 Creative Writer’s Speaker Series at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, with a reading on Thursday, Sept 14. Hurd’s reading will begin at 6 pm in the worship space of the Smith Chapel. A reception for her at 4:30 pm in the chapel living room will precede her appearance; both are free and open to the public. Hurd is the author of two literary nonfiction books, Stirring the Mud: On Swamps, Bogs, and Human Imagination, which was named a Los Angeles Times Best Book of 2001, and Entering the Stone: On Caves and Feeling Through the Dark, and a book of poetry, Objects in This Mirror.
The Scions Of Britain Car Club (the SOB’s) will hold their 14th annual ‘All British Car Gathering’ meet at the Gazebo Park in Waterford, Pa, about 12 miles South of Erie, on September 17 from noon to 4 pm The event is informal - no vendors, no judging, no fee - drive it, drag it, or just talk about it kind of event. The 25th Annual Wine Country Harvest Festival takes place in North East, Pa September 22-24, 2006.
