Erie Seawolves starting outfielder Vincent Blue will be making a return trip to Binghamton NY after the SeaWolves season ends. He had a misdemeanor charge logged against him early Sunday morning from a complaint by a cab driver. Blue was given an appearance ticket charging him with petty larceny and released on $250 bail. Blue and a couple of guys from the team were taking a cab back to their hotel. According to police they were “told to leave the cab in favor of some other prospective customers.” Blue didn’t like that option. He reached over and pulled the keys from the ignition and tossed them into the sewer. Good for Blue.


Bank of America Business Capital announced that it provided a total of $56.5 million in senior credit facilities to certain US and European operations of Bush Industries, a global manufacturer of business and consumer furniture. The asset based financing will be used to refinance existing debt and will provide for growth and working capital requirements. Headquartered in Jamestown, NY, Bush Industries, Inc designs, manufactures and distributes ready to assemble furniture. The company operates a manufacturing and warehouse facility in Erie PA.


John C Lyons of Lyons Den Productions will he holding a 2nd open audition for his new feature film “Schism”, to be filmed in the Erie, PA area. The audition date is Saturday September 9 from 12-4 pm at the Erie Playhouse Rehearsal Hall, 919 State St, Erie. The audition will consist of a screen test, photos, and a basic reading of provided lines from the film’s script. Specific roles and brief descriptions are listed here. John had 73 people turn out for the 1st audition but he still needs more people, especially senior citizens.

LeChase Construction has hired Joseph C DiBitetto as project manager. Before that, he worked for DiDis Corp. DiBitetto is a graduate of Gannon University.

Johanna Harpster began her job on Monday as superintendent of the Windham (VT) Northeast Supervisory Union school district. Harpster received an undergraduate degree in psychology from Allegheny College and is completing her doctorate at the University of Vermont.

Monday night’s game between the Thunder and the Erie SeaWolves has been postponed due to rain. The game will be made up as part of a doubleheader on Wednesday at 5:35 pm. Trenton and Erie will play a single game tonight at 7:05 PM. Matt DeSalvo (3-4, 6.48) will start for Trenton against Erie’s Nate Bumstead (7-12, 4.35). Erie SeaWolves infielder/outfielder Chris Maples has been named Eastern League Player of the Week for the week ending August 27. Maples batted .464 (13-28) with three doubles, two home runs, six RBI, six runs scored, stole one base and collected a slugging percentage of .786 during in seven games. He also notched six multi-hit games during the stretch.

Brian Rogers has been called up to the Pittsburgh Pirates from Indianapolis. Rogers went 1-1 with a 1.08 ERA in seven relief appearances for Indy after being acquired from the Detroit organization in a July 31 trade. The 24 year old, who began the year with Double A Erie, will be making his Major League debut.

Thomas Kingsmore of Erie McDowell and Rob Valentine, a transfer from Mercyhurst North East, will be playing this year for the Robert Morris University men’s lacrosse team.

The Erie County Fair is taking place through September 2 at the fairgrounds in Wattsburg, PA. Here is the schedule of events.

Auditions for “What the Bellhop Saw” will be held today. The full length play is a zany and whimsical farce that requires a large cast. All ages are encouraged to audition, as roles vary and include parts for one young child and several teen/20-somethings. Auditions are at 7 pm at the North East Cultural Center on Vine Street in North East, PA. “What the Bellhop Saw” is directed by Chris Bucci. Rick Derringer will perform tonight, Tursday August 29 at 8 Great Tuesdays. Eight Great Tuesdays is the free live music concert series at the Pepsi Amphitheatre inside Liberty Park. This is the final concert of the season for the series. It only happends 8 times per year, hence the name of the series.

The Pig At The Brig, a pig roast fundraiser to benefit the Erie Maritime Museum and the US Brig Niagara, will be held on Wednesday, August 30 from 6-9 pm. League Members $15/person, Non-Member - $20/person. Enjoy “swine” dining of roasted pork, chicken, corn on the cob, beans and more mouth-watering food. Beer and soft drinks available for purchase. Family First Sports Park will be hosting the Challenge Cup soccer tournament September 1-3, 2006. The National Premier High School Challenge Cup will feature some of the top high school boys and girls teams in the nation. Every hotel room within 50 miles of Erie is booked that weekend.

The 10th annual Erie German Heritage Festival will be held September 2-3, 2006 from 11-8 daily at St Nick’s Grove, 5131 Old French Road (Route 97).

The Presque Isle Cycling Club Ride for the Refuge Bike Tour will be held on September 4 at 7:30 am at Shades Beach in Haborcreek. Bike tour with various ride lengths - 25km, 50 km, 100km, and 50 miles. Water stops and a picnic following the tours. All rides start and finish at Shade’s Beach, 7000 E Lake Rd at Barlett Rd. The Northwest PA Commission will be holding a seminar on RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) on September 13 at the Warren Holiday Inn. Cost is $35 and the deadline to register is Sept 6. For many businesses, RFID will soon be mandatory. Click here for brochure/registration form.


Kayak enthusiasts will have the chance to participate in an eco-paddling experience, unlike any other. The three-day, three-night expedition will explore the many natural resources and recreational opportunities exclusive to Erie PA and the surrounding area. Registration to participate is required. Lake Erie-Allegheny Earth Force is sponsoring this event called the Lake Erie Sojourn which will be held September 7-10.


Erie’s last blast of summer, the second annual Erie Heritage Festival, featuring a special Erie Philharmonic Pops concert on the Bay, will be held on Saturday, September 9, at Liberty Park’s Pepsi Amphitheater.

Former Mecyhurst College basketball great Brent Swain is organizing a Mercyhurst Laker Alumni Basketball Game which is scheduled for September 9 at 7 pm in the Mercyhurst Athletics Center (MAC)..

Barbara Hurd will open the 2006 Creative Writer’s Speaker Series at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, with a reading on Thursday, Sept 14. Hurd’s reading will begin at 6 pm in the worship space of the Smith Chapel. A reception for her at 4:30 pm in the chapel living room will precede her appearance; both are free and open to the public. Hurd is the author of two literary nonfiction books, Stirring the Mud: On Swamps, Bogs, and Human Imagination, which was named a Los Angeles Times Best Book of 2001, and Entering the Stone: On Caves and Feeling Through the Dark, and a book of poetry, Objects in This Mirror.

The Scions Of Britain Car Club (the SOB’s) will hold their 14th annual ‘All British Car Gathering’ meet at the Gazebo Park in Waterford, Pa, about 12 miles South of Erie, on September 17 from noon to 4 pm The event is informal - no vendors, no judging, no fee - drive it, drag it, or just talk about it kind of event. The 2006 Great Lakes Film Festival will be held at the Roadhouse Theatre For Contemporary Art, 145 West 11th St in Erie PA September 20-24.
