Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, is expecting its largest first-year class this fall when 1,051 new students move today. Among these new students are five sets of twins.
Josh Cohick of Erie, Pa is Sports Director of WUSO, the Wittenberg University radio station. Cohick, also editor-in-chief of The Torch, Wittenberg’s student-run newspaper, will handle play-by-play duties for volleyball broadcasts and will join Leo in the booth for football and men’s basketball games as a color analyst. Last year, Cohick was the sideline reporter for home football games and served as color analyst for men’s basketball home games.

The Erie SeaWolves beat Trenton 4-3. They open their last home series of the season tonight hosting Akron at 7:05 pm.
The high school football season kicks off tonight. Erie Cathedral Prep hosts Pittsburgh Perry at 7 pm at Veteran’s Stadium. MCDowell hosts Erie East at 7 pm. Erie Strong Vincent plays at Oil City this evening at 7 pm.

The Erie Otters of the Ontario Hockey League returned 14 players to their home teams Wednesday night and Thursday morning leaving 38 players vying for on spot on the 2006-2007 Regular Season roster. Michigan natives and 2006 OHL Priority Selections Shawn Szydlowski and Robert Shea (selected in the 10th and 12th round respectively) departed the Jamestown Savings Bank Ice Arena Thursday morning. Wednesday night Jonathan Bested, Mathieu Cadiuex, Nick DiSanti, Ryan Dube, Jonathan Hull, Chris Lawlor, Tyler Liukkonen, Lawton McCracken, Shane Owen, Alex Radojcic, Doug Reid and Drew Wearing were all returned to their home teams. The remaining 38 players will continue on and off-ice workouts Friday and Saturday in preparation for a preseason game against the Mississauga IceDogs Saturday night at 7 pm at the Jamestown Savings Bank Ice Arena. Advance general admission tickets for the game are $8 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under and are available at the Otters Office located at 809 French Street. Purchase your tickets at the Otters Office and receive a coupon for 50 percent off admission to both the Lucy-Desi Museum and the Desilu Playhouse located in Jamestown. Tickets can also be purchased at the Jamestown Savings Bank Ice Arena.
The area college football teams open their season on Saturday. Gannon University has a home game at 1 pm against Hillsdale. Mercyhurst opens the 2006 season at Tullio Field with a 1:30 pm kickoff against Northwood University. Allegheny opens their season on the road with a game at Westminster at 1:30 pm. Edinboro travels to West Chester for a 1 pm game.
It’s Bike Night tonight in downtown Erie along State Street from 6-11 pm.
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid is this weeks FREE outdoor movie for the Guelcher Film Series at the Lake Erie Arboretum at Frontier Park, Movies in the Park, tonight Friday September 1 at 9 pm. Bring a blanket or a chair to sit on and join 1,000 of your friends for a fun family friendly evening for a movie in the park. This is the last movie for the year. The movies wre a great idea, hope they do it again next year.

The 10th annual Erie German Heritage Festival will be held September 2-3, 2006 from 11-8 daily at St Nick’s Grove, 5131 Old French Road (Route 97).
The Presque Isle Cycling Club Ride for the Refuge Bike Tour will be held on September 4 at 7:30 am at Shades Beach in Haborcreek. Bike tour with various ride lengths - 25km, 50 km, 100km, and 50 miles. Water stops and a picnic following the tours. All rides start and finish at Shade’s Beach, 7000 E Lake Rd at Barlett Rd. The Northwest PA Commission will be holding a seminar on RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) on September 13 at the Warren Holiday Inn. Cost is $35 and the deadline to register is Sept 6. For many businesses, RFID will soon be mandatory. Click here for brochure/registration form.


Former Mecyhurst College basketball great Brent Swain is organizing a Mercyhurst Laker Alumni Basketball Game which is scheduled for September 9 at 7 pm in the Mercyhurst Athletics Center (MAC)..
Barbara Hurd will open the 2006 Creative Writer’s Speaker Series at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, with a reading on Thursday, Sept 14. Hurd’s reading will begin at 6 pm in the worship space of the Smith Chapel. A reception for her at 4:30 pm in the chapel living room will precede her appearance; both are free and open to the public. Hurd is the author of two literary nonfiction books, Stirring the Mud: On Swamps, Bogs, and Human Imagination, which was named a Los Angeles Times Best Book of 2001, and Entering the Stone: On Caves and Feeling Through the Dark, and a book of poetry, Objects in This Mirror.
The Scions Of Britain Car Club (the SOB’s) will hold their 14th annual ‘All British Car Gathering’ meet at the Gazebo Park in Waterford, Pa, about 12 miles South of Erie, on September 17 from noon to 4 pm The event is informal - no vendors, no judging, no fee - drive it, drag it, or just talk about it kind of event. Regarding Mr. Phillips...maybe if everyone stopped referring to him by that cute little nickname, he might not have his cult status and police will have a better chance at getting this guy. It's a shame that he's turned into some kind of folk hero by many people in that area. Of course the Times article a few weeks back didn't help.
