Ralph “Bucky” Phillips is still on the loose. Phillips was convicted of burglary and drug charges. He broke out of jail in April and has had the help of the fine, outstanding citizens of Western NY in staying one step ahead of law enforecement since then. Phillips is the main suspect in the shootings of 3 police officer including the death of NY State Police Trooper Joseph Longobardo.

WJET-TV raised $235,932 during the Jerry Lewis Muscular Dystrophy Association Labor Day Telethon.

Albanian Prime Minister Sali Berisha has hired former US Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge of Erie PA as a consultant to advise his government on a range of issues including NATO membership, fighting corruption and tackling organized crime. Ridge will make occasional visits to Albania, but will primarily work with the government from the United States.

Gannon University President Antoine M Garibaldi, PhD, has announced the appointment of Richard (Dick) Sukitsch as the university’s Dean of Enrollment Services. The appointment is effective immediately. Sukitsch has been serving as Interim Dean of Enrollment Services since July. Sukitsch joined Gannon in 1976 as Director of Admissions, a position he held until 1985. Sukitsch left the university for four years in 1985 to serve as the Dean of Enrollment at Robert Morris College in Moon Township, Pennsylvania, now known as Robert Morris University. Sukitsch returned to Gannon in 1989 as Dean of Enrollment Management, a position he held until 1995. From 1995-2000, Sukitsch served as the Director of Institutional Research and Associate Provost. When Dr Garibaldi was appointed President in 2001, Sukitsch continued as Director of Institutional Research and Special Assistant to the President, a post he has held until recently accepting this full-time position as Dean of Enrollment Services. Sukitsch is a PhD candidate in Higher Education Administration at the University of Pittsburgh.

Designated hitter Ryan Mulhern drove in two runs with a double in the 10th inning to lift the Aeros to a 5-4 win over the Erie SeaWolves on Monday in Erie, Pa. Just after the game, Glenn Ezell, the Detroit Tigers’ director of player development, fired manager Duffy Dyer, hitting instructor Pete Incaviglia and pitching coach Mike Caldwell.

Erie Villa Maria Academy boys basketball coach Mark Majewski resigned to become 9th grade boys basketball coach at Erie Cathedral Prep.

The Edinboro UofP women’s cross country team topped the team standings and had four runners finish in the meet’s top 20 finishers, including top-finisher Rachael Lenzel, at the Bill Sudeck Invitational in Cleveland Heights, Ohio. Host school Case Western finished second.


2006 Waterford Community Fair
The Waterford Community Fair is being held now through September 9 2006.

The 86th annual Spartansburg Community Fair is being held now through September 9 2006. Spartansburg is about 10 miles South of Corry PA. There is a huge parade on Saturday morning at 11 am and a HUGE fireworks display Saturday night at 11:15 pm.

The art galleries of Allegheny College will present two exhibits, “Beggars and Choosers: Motherhood Is Not a Class Privilege in America” and “Son of Noir,” from Tuesday, Sept 5 through Tuesday, Oct 3. In conjunction with the opening, Rickie Solinger, curator of “Beggars and Choosers,” will present a slide lecture today, Tuesday, Sept 5 at 7 pm in the galleries. Following the lecture, a reception will be held at 8 pm to celebrate the opening of both exhibits. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Friday, 12:30-5 pm; Saturday, 1:30-5 pm; and Sunday, 2-4 pm. The Art Galleries are located in Doane Hall of Art on the Allegheny College campus, east of North Main Street, between College and John Streets. The Art Galleries are wheelchair accessible. Gallery tours are available to groups by request. All events at Allegheny College Art Galleries are free to the public. Please call ahead to verify; programs are subject to change. The deadline to register for an Erie Art Museum fall classes is fast approaching. Tuesday, September 5 is the last day to sign up for the new session that begins Monday, September 11. The Museum is offering a wide array of adult and children’s classes in painting, photography, clay and more. Youth classes include Kids and Clay; Pottery for Young People; Fabric, Wood, Yarn, Paint and More; Drawing Basics for Young People; Printmaking for Kids; and Without Boundaries. Adult classes include Weaving Basics, Bellydancing, Oriental Painting, New Approaches to Life Drawing, Freeing the Natural Body, Beginning American Sign Language, Jewelry Making, Watercolor Landscape Class, Advanced Digital Photography, Still Life Painting Class, Pottery Classes, The Surface of Clay and Independent Study - Advanced Ceramics. Space is limited, so register today. Costs vary by class and payment is due in full at the time of registration. A discount is available for Erie Art Museum members. Kayak enthusiasts will have the chance to participate in an eco-paddling experience, unlike any other. The three-day, three-night expedition will explore the many natural resources and recreational opportunities exclusive to Erie PA and the surrounding area. Registration to participate is required. Lake Erie-Allegheny Earth Force is sponsoring this event called the Lake Erie Sojourn which will be held September 7-10.

Thursday evening, September 8, Molly Brannigans will host their Second annual Block Party in the 500 block of State Street to benefit the Erie American Heart Association. Rince-na-Tiarna Irish Dancers will open at 7 pm, followed by the Mulligans and from 9-midnight U2 tribute band 2U will perform. The event is free and open to the public. Food and beverages will be available for sale.

Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman, hosts of the Discovery Channel hit “MythBusters” will kick-off the 2006-07 Behrend Speaker Series with an interactive lecture on Thursday, September 7, 2006, at 7:30 pm. Due to the expected large turnout, Penn State Behrend has moved the event from Erie Hall to the Junker Center. Doors open at 6:30 pm. The event is free and open to the public.

The 6th annual Highmark Triathlon will be held Saturday, September 9 at 9 am at Presque Isle State Park. All segments of the triathlon the swim, the bike ride, and the run will start, finish and transition at the Beach 6 area. Proceeds from the Highmark Triathlon will benefit the Highmark Caring Place, Lake Erie-Allegheny Earth Force, Neighborhood Art House and the Presque Isle Partnership.

The Northwest PA Commission will be holding a seminar on RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) on September 13 at the Warren Holiday Inn. Cost is $35 and the deadline to register is Sept 6. For many businesses, RFID will soon be mandatory. Click here for brochure/registration form.

Erie’s last blast of summer, the second annual Erie Heritage Festival, featuring a special Erie Philharmonic Pops concert on the Bay, will be held on Saturday, September 9, at Liberty Park’s Pepsi Amphitheater.

Former Mecyhurst College basketball great Brent Swain is organizing a Mercyhurst Laker Alumni Basketball Game which is scheduled for September 9 at 7 pm in the Mercyhurst Athletics Center (MAC)..

Barbara Hurd will open the 2006 Creative Writer’s Speaker Series at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, with a reading on Thursday, Sept 14. Hurd’s reading will begin at 6 pm in the worship space of the Smith Chapel. A reception for her at 4:30 pm in the chapel living room will precede her appearance; both are free and open to the public. Hurd is the author of two literary nonfiction books, Stirring the Mud: On Swamps, Bogs, and Human Imagination, which was named a Los Angeles Times Best Book of 2001, and Entering the Stone: On Caves and Feeling Through the Dark, and a book of poetry, Objects in This Mirror.

The Erie Irish Festival will be held September 15-17 at Rainbow Gardens on the grounds of Waldameer Park. Adult daily admission $2; all weekend only $3. Children under 16 admitted free.

The Scions Of Britain Car Club (the SOB’s) will hold their 14th annual ‘All British Car Gathering’ meet at the Gazebo Park in Waterford, Pa, about 12 miles South of Erie, on September 17 from noon to 4 pm The event is informal - no vendors, no judging, no fee - drive it, drag it, or just talk about it kind of event. The 2006 Great Lakes Film Festival will be held at the Roadhouse Theatre For Contemporary Art, 145 West 11th St in Erie PA September 20-24.

The 25th Annual Wine Country Harvest Festival takes place in North East, Pa September 22-24, 2006. The festival features two venues, Gibson Park in downtown North East and Gravel Pit Park just 1.5 miles west of downtown. You’ll enjoy wine by the glass, tour buses to the five local wineries, Arts and Crafts, Main Stage Entertainment, a Children’s Area, Cruise in on Sunday, Bike Wine Country Tours, wine and food seminars and a champagne breakfast.

I wanted to remind you that Spartansburg (10 miles south of Corry) is having their 86th Annual Community Fair this week. We receive no media coverage like Erie County Fair, Crawford County Fair, Warren Fair or even Waterford Community Fair. We've had 86 of these and it is going on from this Sunday through Saturday. There is a huge parade on Saturday Morning at 11am and a HUGE fireworks display Saturday Night at 11:15pm.

We aren't all hillbillies out here. We even have a website that lists all activities:
