Erie PA News and Events for Tuesday September 19, 2006

Erie City Council will vote on Wednesday to spend $40,420.00 for a new email system. Maybe they can send the layoff notices via the new email system. The city is in dire financial condition and a shut down of all non-essential city services before the end of the year is a good possibility. A take over by the state is could be in the future. He’s my suggestion: give everyone a free Gmail account and buy 100 shares of Google.
The Greater Erie Board of Realtors recently welcomed 8 new members. They are Jeanene A Gunter, Brian C Hammel, Shawn H Myers, Christy A Lingle, Doreen L Foutz, Mary E Sorge, Christopher M Davison and Kendra A Brozich.

GMail's not bad, but I'm sure there are open-source alternatives out there that are much more cost effecient. I understand there's hardware and other things that need to be added, but $40k? That's just some company trying to take advantage of the City, and why not? The City doesn't seem to know any better.

Yeah, Gmail isn't realistic but I figured they could just say they spent $40K for with and get 100 shares of GOOG for free. With the City of Erie using DotNetNuke for their website, they should consider DotNetOpenMail when it comes out of Beta.
Thunderbird, Evolution, sendmail and Chandler are a few open source email clients they could look in to for now.
