Erie will rehire 5 laidoff police officers with the help of a $250,000 grant from the Pennsylvania Police on Patrol fund. Philadelphia will received funding for 100 officers and Pittsburgh a grant for 40 officers. Other communities receiving the grants are Allentown, Chester and Chester Township, Harrisburg, Reading, Altoona, Wilkes-Barre, Bensalem, Williamsport, Pottstown, York and New Castle. The grants are for 3 years with municipalities obligated to keep the officers for an additional 3 years. Each officer costs the Erie about $80,000. Total cost to the City of Erie taxpayers in the next 6 years - $1,650,000.

Scott Balice Strategies (SBS), a woman-owned, full-service financial advisory firm, announced that Debra J Schnebel has joined as a Senior Vice President and head of SBS’s new office in Anchorage, Alaska. Ms Schnebel graduated cum laude with a BA from Allegheny College in Meadville. She received her JD from Northwestern University and her MBA from the University of Chicago.

Gannon University on Tuesday, Oct 3 will host a Graduate and Professional School Fair. Representatives from more than 70 schools/ programs will be on hand to meet with students and answer questions. The fair will be held from 10 am to 2 pm in the Yehl Room of the Waldron Campus Center, 124 West Seventh Street in Erie.

The Mercyhurst women’s tennis team defeated Allegheny 7-2 in non-conference action. Elizabeth Mullane, pictured above, lost only four games on her way to wins in singles and doubles.

The Mercyhurst College women’s hockey team is ranked No 5 in the US College Hockey Online’s preseason Division I poll.


The 2006 Great Lakes Film Festival opens today. It will be held at the Roadhouse Theatre For Contemporary Art, 145 West 11th St in Erie PA September 20-24.

Richie Havens will be performing a concert at the Tom Ridge Environmental Center Big Green Screen Theater on Friday September 22 at 8 pm. Tickets are $40 and can be purchased at the TREC Administrative Offices between 10 am and 4 pm Monday thru Friday. Cash, Check made out to Presque Isle Partnership, or Money Orders only.


The 25th Annual Wine Country Harvest Festival takes place in North East, Pa September 22-24, 2006. The festival features two venues, Gibson Park in downtown North East and Gravel Pit Park just 1.5 miles west of downtown. You’ll enjoy wine by the glass, tour buses to the five local wineries, Arts and Crafts, Main Stage Entertainment, a Children’s Area, Cruise in on Sunday, Bike Wine Country Tours, wine and food seminars and a champagne breakfast.

“Dining Room” by AR Gurney will be performed at the Gannon University Schuster Theatre Thur-Sun, Sept. 28-Oct. 1 and Thur-Sat, Oct. 5-7.
