US Rep Phil English of Erie has introduced the Classroom Community Partnership Act of 2006 which would measure the effectiveness of lengthening the school year and day by setting up a three-year pilot program that provides grants to states willing to participate. The typical American school year ranges between 175 and 180 days while internationally, the school year ranges from 210 to 250 days. Schools would operate under an academic calendar of no less than 200 school days, each having at least seven hours devoted to actual instruction.
Rebecca Hart from Erie, PA, on her Hanoverian gelding Norteassa (aka Nordkap or Pippin) will compete in the International ParaEquestrian dressage show in Moorsele, Belgium being held September 28 to October 1, 2006.
Lord Corp of Erie, Pa was awarded on Sept 15, 2006, a delivery order amount of $11,389,500 in a firm-fixed-price contract for rod end bearing for the UH-60 Black Hawk. Work will be performed in Dayton, Ohio, and is expected to be completed by Sept. 30, 2011.
Penn State Behrend has archived the student newspaper from the fall of 1948 through 1989 as part of their online resources. The digital records can be accessed through the Lilley Library’s Web site here. The weekly newspaper was established as the college’s first official student body publication on October 26, 1948. Throughout the years, it has seen several name changes, including The Nittany Cub (1948-71), Behrend Collegian (1971-84), Penn State Behrend Collegian (1984-88), Collegian (1988-93), The Behrend College Collegian (1993-98), and The Behrend Beacon (1998-present).

The Erie Art Museum’s fun, family friendly exhibit featuring colorful steel sculptures comes to an end in less than two weeks. Individuals eager to see these polychromatic assemblages and the studies that preceded the works can visit the Frame Shop Gallery exhibit before the closing on Saturday, September 30. The exhibit is designed to complement the “Art Around Erie” public art project featuring large scale David Hayes sculptures throughout downtown Erie and in Frontier Park. “Art Around Erie” ends October 23. The Erie Art Museum is open Tuesday through Saturday 11 am to 5 pm and Sunday 1 pm to 5 pm. Cost is $4 for adults, $3 for students and seniors and $2 for children under 12. Annex Gallery and Frame Shop Gallery exhibits are always free. The Museum’s Main Floor and Ground Floor Galleries are free to all on Wednesdays. Erie SeaWolves GM John Frey said he was not a candidate for the Connecticut Defenders GM position. The team said they have narrowed their choice to four candidates. Frey was quoted in the Norwich Bulletin saying his wife would divorce him if he told her they would have to move again.
The Gannon men’s soccer team dropped a 3-2 double overtime decision to Mercyhurst.
The Penn State-Behrend volleyball team defeated Buffalo State 3-0.
The Alfred State College women’s soccer team evened their record at 2-2-1 on the season with a 11-0 victory over Mercyhurst North East.
Mike Machuga of Erie is in 3rd place at the Japan Cup 2006 in Tokyo.
Mercyhurst Prep faces Iroquois in a Thursday night football game at the stadium.
Novelist Ray Robertson will read at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, as part of its 2006 Creative Writer’s Speaker Series. Robertson will read selections from his works at 6 pm tonight, Thursday, September 21, in the college’s Smith Chapel worship space. A reception for him at 4:30 pm in the chapel living room will precede the reading; both are free and open to the public. Robertson, who teaches creative writing at the University of Toronto, is the author of the novels Home Movies, Gently Down the Stream, Moody Food (which was voted a Best Book of 2002 by both the Toronto Globe and Mail and the Vancouver Sun) and the forthcoming What Happened Later. He also published a collection of nonfiction, Mental Hygiene: Essays on Writers and Writing.

Richie Havens will be performing a concert at the Tom Ridge Environmental Center Big Green Screen Theater on Friday September 22 at 8 pm.
