Erie PA News and Events for Saturday September 23, 2006

The Erie-Western Pennsylvania Port Authority ferry from Erie to Port Dover, Ontario will begin as trial runs in 2007. The details were published in the Port Dover Maple Leaf. Great job by Emma finding the news and correctly pointing out nothing has published locally.
The port authority has somehow found the money to have a boat built by Willard Marine. Willard primarily builds boats for the US Navy and US Coast Guard. The 65 foot boat will be able to carry 46 passengers. A few crossing will happen in late 2007 with twice daily service in 2008. The Erie-Western Pennsylvania Port Authority eventually plans to purchase a 190 foot fast ferry, which will carry up to 46 cars and up to 248 passengers. A seperate cargo/ freight ferry is also in the planning stages which would travel between Erie and Nanticoke, Ontario, Canada.

Meadowcroft Rockshelter has received a $2 million state grant. A visitors’ center will be constructed at the Washington County site, allowing for phenomenal views of the excavation, according to principal excavator Dr James Adovasio, who directs the Mercyhurst Archaeological Institute at Mercyhurst College. Mercyhurst maintains the rockshelter, where it conducts research and trains archaeologists as well as students from a variety of other disciplines. First excavated in 1973 by Adovasio, Meadowcroft is a pivotal archaeological find with evidence of human habitation dating to 16,000 years ago. As such, the rockshelter represents one of the most convincing rebuttals to the Clovis theory that holds that the first humans arrived 11,000 to 12,000 years ago.
The Gannon University Villa Maria School of Nursing has been awarded two separate grants from the Pennsylvania Higher Education Foundation (PHEF). PHEF awarded the School of Nursing a $78,000 Nursing Education Grant for the current academic year (2006-07). Gannon will use the grant to provide scholarships to students in both its bachelor’s and master’s programs in nursing. The scholarships will benefit students pursuing careers as both professional nurses and as nurse educators. In addition, PHEF awarded the School of Nursing an $8,000 Nursing Scholarship for Low Income Individuals Grant, also for the current academic year. The grant was made possible through a donation from National City Bank and is designed to help all students pursue a degree and a career in nursing.
Dr Marcia Farrell has joined the faculty of Wilkes University as assistant professor of English. She obtained her PhD from the University of Tulsa and holds the MA in English from Gannon University and the BA in English from Mercyhurst College.
Ryan Ludzik turned aside 48 shots to lead the Erie Otters to a 5-2 win over the Windsor Spitfires in an Ontario Hockey League game played last night at the Windsor Arena. The game was the season opener for both clubs. Nick Palmieri, Ronny, Rogers, Josh Vatri, Andrew Hotham and Justin Hodgman scored for the Otters while Sean O’Connor and Patrick Lee each collected two assists. Craig Voakes and Bradley Snetsinger scored for the Spitfires. The Otters led 1-0 after one and 4-2 after two. Ludzik was named the first star of the game while Hotham was the second and Windsor forward Mickey Renaud the third. The Otters return to action Saturday night when they travel to Plymouth to face the Whalers. The game can be heard live on 1330 Erie’s ESPN Radio beginning with the pre-game show at 6:50 pm. The Otters 2006-2007 Home Opener takes place Saturday, September 30th at the Tullio Arena against the London Knights.
