Well no wonder the Erie newspaper didn’t run a story about the the Erie-Western Pennsylvania Port Authority ferry from Erie to Port Dover, Ontario. See yesterdays post where I pointed out that the story didn’t run locally. The only bit of new info was that Willard Marine would be building the boat. The authority received a a $700,000 grant that they had until October to use or lose. They are buying a 65 foot boat will be able to carry 46 passengers. A few crossing will happen in late 2007 with twice daily service in 2008. The Erie-Western Pennsylvania Port Authority eventually plans to purchase a 190 foot fast ferry, which will carry up to 46 cars and up to 248 passengers. A seperate cargo/ freight ferry is also in the planning stages which would travel between Erie and Nanticoke, Ontario, Canada.

Pennsylvania’s first hot air balloon ascent was made by John Steiner in Erie PA on June 18 1857. The picture of the event was the first photograph of an American aircraft. It is on display at the SmithsonianIn National Air and Space Museum. In1863, Steiner was in St Paul Minn and gave the first balloon ride to someone whose name might be familiar to you - Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin.
