There is an article in todays Wall Street Journal (registration required to read the entire article) about how manufacturing companies are having trouble finding skilled workers to hire. They quoted Dave Tullio, president of Custom Engineering Company in Erie, saying they have job openings but can’t find the workers. I’m sure there are dzens of other companies around town in the same boat. Custom Engineering lists their job openings on their site.

SafeNet announced a $2 million fundraising campaign to expand their shelter. SafeNet provides a variety of domestic violence services including hotline, counseling, an emergency shelter, transitional housing, legal advocacy, medical intervention for domestic violence, and school-based prevention. You can donate online through PayPal, by fax, mail, phone - every way possible.
Phoenix Youth Services partner Regis Salaga of Erie PA said he will look for another location for a group home after residents of Shenango Township voiced opposition. The home would have housed 2 dozen mentally-challenged boys ages 15 to 18 and employed 20 people. Salaga, Chris Leavitt of Sharon along with Michael Sember and Dan Leali of Hermitage are partners in Phoenix Youth Services
Clarion-Limestone forfeited their football game with North East that was to be played on Friday. C-L called North East just hours before game time. It was to be North East’s homecoming game. Eight C-L players are out with injuries and 2 starters were declared ineligible after they were arrested for drug possession earlier on Friday. North East had their homecoming dance but the homecoming queen and king will be announced at their Oct 13 game against Fairview. North East will also host another dance.
The Gannon University men’s soccer team beat Saginaw Valley State University 4-1 while the Gannon women’s team lost to SVSU 2-0.
Mike Machuga of Erie won a four-bowler shootout at the PBA Tour Japan Cup firing a 235 to defeat Chris Barnes (215), Steve Jaros (213) and Wes Malott (193). Machuga then defeated Patrick Healey Jr, 253-189, before falling to Robert Smith, 222-200. Walter Ray Williams Jr won the tournament, his 42nd career tour title.
Bob Learn Jr of Erie will be the headline speaker at the 38th annual Flint Bowling Hall of Fame ceremonies September 31. Learn holds the career record for 300 games.
The seventeenth season of the Penn State Behrend Music at Noon: The Logan Series opens Tuesday, September 26, with a free lunchtime performance by South American pianist Claudia Calderon. Calderon and three llanero, or plains musicians, will perform at noon in the Reed Union Building’s McGarvey Commons. In keeping with the informal spirit of the Logan Series, admission is free, and casual dress and packed lunches are encouraged. Hot and cold lunch items also can be purchased in the building’s Bruno’s Cafe.
“Dining Room” by AR Gurney will be performed at the Gannon University Schuster Theatre Thur-Sun, Sept. 28-Oct. 1 and Thur-Sat, Oct. 5-7. Thur-Sat shows will begin at 8 pm with the Sunday matinee at 3 pm. For more information call 814-871-5467 or contact the box office at 814-871-7494. The Erie Civic Music Association is brining the Glenn Miller Orchestra to town. They will perform at the Warner Theatre on Oct. 8 at 3 pm. Tickets are $20.
