Within 10 years, over 1 million people will be working in the Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) industry. RFID is an automatic identification method, relying on storing and remotely retrieving data using devices called RFID tags or transponders. An RFID tag is an object that can be attached to or incorporated into a product, animal, or person for the purpose of identification using radio waves. Chip-based RFID tags contain silicon chips and antennas. Erie PA is the hot spot for the industry with the 2005 opening of The Radio Frequency Identification Center of Excellence At Penn State Behrend, the magazine RFID Solutions published by Erie based VertMarkets (Corry Publishing), and the fast growing Indent Solutions.


Spectrum Control of Erie (Nasdaq: SPEC), a leading designer and manufacturer of electronic control products and systems, reported results for the third quarter ended August 31, 2006. For the third quarter of fiscal 2006, the Company reported net income of $1,852,000 or 14 cents per share on sales of $33,232,000, compared to net income of $1,558,000 or 12 cents per share on sales of $25,901,000 for the same period last year.

Team Hardinger Transportation of Erie and the Oil Region Alliance announced Hardinger will build a 120,000 sq ft building in the Barkeyville Industrial Park in Venango County. The building will be a warehouse, manufacturing and logistics facility. Hardinger will use it to service the GE plant in Mercer County.


Last evening, Donna Haskins and Tom Kennedy celebrated the 10th anniversay of the Palace Business Centre. The Palace Harware building is located at 915 State Street.

Mercyhurst Prep defeated Iroquois 20-3 in a Thursday night high school football game.

The Erie Otters of the Ontario Hockey League will kick-off the 2006-2007 Regular Season this weekend with a pair of road games. Friday the Otters travel to Windsor to take on the Spitfires followed by a Saturday evening encounter with the Plymouth Whalers. Both games can be heard live on 1330 Erie’s ESPN Radio and online at OttersHockey.com. Friday’s broadcast gets underway with the pre-game show at 7:15 pm. Saturday the pre-game show begins at 6:50 pm.

Mercyhurst College baseball coach Joe Spano has announced the hiring of former Major League player Mark Johnson as the new pitching coach for the Lakers.

The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Red Barons signed a 2 year Player Development Agreement with the New York Yankees. Mandalay, which owns the Erie SeaWolves, signed a contract to run the team.

The Mercyhurst men’s lacrosse office announced the hiring of Brendon Burke as the new assistant coach.

The Las Vegas Wranglers announced today that they have agreed to terms with defenseman Jody Robinson for the 2006-07 season. Jody Robinson spent the past four seasons with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers of the American Hockey League. Robinson played his collegiate hockey at Mercyhurst College in Erie, racking up 13 goals, and 45 assists for 58 points and 52 penalty minutes.

The Gwinnett Gladiators announced today that they have agreed to terms with defensemen Brian Lee. Lee played five seasons of major junior hockey with the Erie Otters.

The 2006 Great Lakes Film Festival is taking place at the Roadhouse Theatre For Contemporary Art, 145 West 11th St in Erie PA through September 24.

Richie Havens will be performing a concert at the Tom Ridge Environmental Center Big Green Screen Theater on Friday September 22 at 8 pm. Tickets are $40 and can be purchased at the TREC Administrative Offices between 10 am and 4 pm. Cash, Check made out to Presque Isle Partnership, or Money Orders only.

The 25th Annual Wine Country Harvest Festival takes place in North East, Pa September 22-24, 2006. The festival features two venues, Gibson Park in downtown North East and Gravel Pit Park just 1.5 miles west of downtown. You’ll enjoy wine by the glass, tour buses to the five local wineries, Arts and Crafts, Main Stage Entertainment, a Children’s Area, Cruise in on Sunday, Bike Wine Country Tours, wine and food seminars and a champagne breakfast.

“Dining Room” by AR Gurney will be performed at the Gannon University Schuster Theatre Thur-Sun, Sept. 28-Oct. 1 and Thur-Sat, Oct. 5-7.
