Knew this was coming. There is story in today’s Pittsburgh Post-Gazette quoting the president of Allegheny College saying they oppose the name change of Penn State McKeesport to Penn State Allegheny. It looks like this will wind up in court. Allegheny College President Richard J. Cook said Allegheny in the higher education context is their brand. In the 1990’s Allegheny College sued the Allegheny Health, Education and Research Foundation over use of the name Allegheny.

It will be interesting to see if Allegheny College actually does go forward with a law suit. Although they've trademarked their name (at least at the Federal level), it might be difficult to claim that a college, actually located in Allegheny county, shouldn't have that title. This especially due to the fact that the actually name will be Penn State Allegheny (distinctly different from just Allegheny college). Another possible stumbling block for Allegheny is that a geographic name is weighed differently in trademark law (compared to a unique, made-up name).

I see Deborah Steff (former Erie Traffic Court employee) was sentenced to 11 1/2 to 23 months in prison. You've got to be kidding me!!?? She embezzled (stole) over a quarter of a million dollars and only gets 11 1/2 to 23 months? I guess crime does pay?

So much for those of us who work everyday and pay our bills on time and don't steal. Great message the court sends to potential embezzlers!!!!
