The estate of Brittany Legler is suing the Erie County Office of Children and Youth alleging that actions and inactions by the agency contributed to her death. They’ve got a good case. Brittany Legler died from continual beatings by her adoptive mother Lisa Iarussi. Iarussi was sentenced to 7-14 years. It’s the job of the Erie County Office of Children and Youth to protect kids and they aren’t doing their job. The agency is a mess.
Republican Gubernatorial candidate Lynn Swann will be making a campaign stop in Erie today. Former Secretary of Homeland Security Tom Ridge of Erie will appear with Swann at the Erie Intermodial Transportation Center at 8 pm. The event is free and open to the public.
Mike Kohlmiller of Erie pleaded not guilty to charges of passing bad checks at his arraignment in Ashtabula, Ohio. Kohlmiller is also facing 55 fraud charges in Erie with his used car dealership Township Automotive.

Some 375 Academic Sports League students from 19 high schools will be participating in this Saturday’s Academic Sports League Math and Super Quiz competition at Penn State Behrend.

Travis Fuller capped a four-goal comeback with a power-play goal midway through the third period as the Mississauga IceDogs skated to a 4-3 win over the Erie Otters in an Ontario Hockey League game played tonight at the Hershey Centre. Michael Swift, Jordan Owens and Jadran Beljo also scored for the IceDogs, who improved to a perfect 5-0 on the season. Sean O’Connor, Vince Scott and Ryan O’Marra staked the Otters to a 3-0 lead nine minutes into the game. Stanislav Polodna collected two assists for his first two OHL points. Erie sunk to 1-3-0-2 with the loss. The Otters return to action Saturday night when they travel to Barrie to face the Colts (3-1-0-1).
The Mercyhurst College men’s hockey team prepares for a challenging 2006-07 season Saturday when it entertains the Windsor St Clair Saints in an exhibition contest set to start at 7 pm at the Ice Center.
Andrew Miller, the sixth selection in the 2006 draft by the Detroit Tigers, said he expected to be assigned to the Erie SeaWolves for 2007. He might be ready for the majors by mid-2007 or 2008. After leading North Carolina to the College World Series he signed a $3.5 million contract and was assigned to Class A Lakeland and the got a September callup to the Tigers, per his contract.
Belle Valley Fire Department presents it’s annual haunted house “Valley of the Ghouls” every Thursday, Friday and Saturday in October plus Monday Oct 30th. Time 7:30-11pm. Cost is $5.


Gannon University will host its annual Alumni Homecoming and Reunion Weekend Friday-Sunday, Oct 6-8. The Gannon and Villa Maria College classes of 1956, ‘66, ‘81, and ‘96 will celebrate landmark reunions. Other groups celebrating reunions include the African-American Alumni, Villa Maria Alumnae, ROTC Alumni, Honors Program Alumni, SGA Alumni, Heritage Society Alumni, Occupational Therapy Alumni, and the class of 1991. Alumni will have the opportunity to sit in on classes with current students, take trolley tours of the campus and downtown Erie, watch the Homecoming Parade, cheer the Golden Knights on against Wayne State in football, renew their marriage vows, attend mass, and have brunch with Gannon President Antoine M Garibaldi, PhD.

Presque Isle staff and local photographer Bob Grubbs will cover the basics of outdoor photography and take participants into the field for some hands-on demonstrations of using blinds, lighting, and some tips and tricks that every outdoor photographer should know. The Erie Planetarium offers two state-of-the-art shows that will suit your astronomy and earth science interests, and are sure to fascinate visitors of any age. As the waterfowl make their way through the area this time of year, identifying the many species can be a fun hobby or a necessity for hunting. During this workshop participants will be introduced to various ID techniques, receive a waterfowl ID guide to keep, and enjoy time in the field trying out their skills. The Erie Civic Music Association is brining the Glenn Miller Orchestra to town. They will perform at the Warner Theatre on Oct. 8 at 3 pm. Tickets are $20.
The Wooden Nickel Buffalo Farm Fall Festival will be held October 8-9 2005, each day from 11am-6pm. Fall Festival offers fun for the whole family.
