The Erie SeaWolves alumni team, the Detroit Tigers, completed a remarkable upset of the New York Yahkees with Saturday’s 8-3 win. The Yankees will be playing golf while the Tigers will face the Oakland A’s in the ALCS. Nearly half of the Tigers roster are former Erie SeaWolves players.
Gannon University honored four individuals at its annual Distinguished Alumni Dinner. Robert P Barker, Gannon class of 1972, bachelor’s degree in business administration. Barker serves as vice president of Parker Hannifin Corp and president of Parker Aerospace. Richard H Heibel, MD, Gannon class of 1968, bachelor’s degree in biology. Heibel currently is a clinical professor of internal medicine at the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine’s (LECOM) campus in Bradenton. Dana M Fallon, Esq, Gannon class of 1991, bachelor’s degree in psychology. Fallon is an attorney with Ritzert and Leyton, PC, located in Fairfax, Va. Her practice focuses on advising institutions of higher education regarding compliance with accreditation standards and state and federal laws. Judith L Jacobus, MD, Gannon class of 1982, bachelor’s degree in health sciences. Jacobus is a practicing family physician in Altoona, Pa.
US Rep Phil English is a candidate to become head of the National Republican Campaign Committee. The committee distributes money to candidates.

Andrew Marshall scored twice and added three assists to lead the Barrie Colts to a narrow 8-7 win over the Erie Otters in an Ontario Hockey League game played last night at the Barrie Molson Centre. Kelly Geoffrey paced the Otters attack with two goals (including the first of his career) and two assists. Nick Palmieri added two goals and an assist while Sean O’Connor had a goal and two assists. Luke Gazdic (with the first of his career) and Ryan O’Marra rounded out the Otters attack. The Otters dropped to 1-4-0-2. The Otters wrap up a three-game road trip Monday afternoon (Canadian Thanksgiving) when they travel to Owen Sound to play the Attack. The game can be heard live on 1330 Erie’s ESPN Radio beginning with the pre-game show at 1:45 pm. The next Otters home games take place Friday, October 13th
The Edinboro women’s soccer team lost to IUP 5-2.
The Denison women’s soccer team edged Allegheny College 1-0.
The Mercyhurst College men’s hockey team beat St Clair College 8-1 in an exhibition game. Junior forward Ben Cottreau had a natural hat trick in third period.
The Erie Illusion will conduct a tryout today from 1-3 pm at Bayview Park, West 2nd and Cherry Streets. The tryouts are free and open to any woman 18 years or older who wish to join the Erie Illusion. They are designed for women who have no, or limited experience with football. Interested women need to bring workout clothes and proof of insurance.
Mount Calvary RC Church, 2022 East Lake Road, is holding a pancake breakfast this morning from 8:30 am til Noon. Adults $4.50 and children under 12 - $3.
Gannon University student Amanda Hovis is raising money to benefit The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. She has pledged to help a 6 year old Erie boy in need of an organ transplant. The spaghetti lunch runs from Noon to 4 pm today at the St Mark’s Ward Center, 835 Smithson Ave in Lawrence Park. For more information call 814-898-1454.
The Presque Isle Partnership 5th annual “Walk to Make a Great Park Better” takes place today at 1 pm. This walk is in honor of the memories of David Hanlon and Frank Pettinato Sr and benefits Presque Isle State Park. Meet at the Rotary Pavilion in the Waterworks Area for a 3 mile (5K) Walk. Pledges are required to participate. Free cookout for participants following the Walk. Students may qualify for college scholarship awards. To be eligible for the scholarship, the student must complete the scholarship application the day of the Walk, participate in the walk and generate a minimum of $25 in pledges. Scholarships are awarded to students from Millcreek and Erie School Districts. Students in grades 10-12 may apply.
The Gannon University annual Alumni Homecoming and Reunion Weekend wraps up today. The Gannon and Villa Maria College classes of 1956, ‘66, ‘81, and ‘96 will celebrate landmark reunions. Other groups celebrating reunions include the African-American Alumni, Villa Maria Alumnae, ROTC Alumni, Honors Program Alumni, SGA Alumni, Heritage Society Alumni, Occupational Therapy Alumni, and the class of 1991. Alumni will have the opportunity to sit in on classes with current students, take trolley tours of the campus and downtown Erie, watch the Homecoming Parade, cheer the Golden Knights on against Wayne State in football, renew their marriage vows, attend mass, and have brunch with Gannon President Antoine M Garibaldi, PhD.


As the waterfowl make their way through the area this time of year, identifying the many species can be a fun hobby or a necessity for hunting. During this workshop participants will be introduced to various ID techniques, receive a waterfowl ID guide to keep, and enjoy time in the field trying out their skills. Workshop also includes lunch. $20 fee, registration required. Meet at the Tom Ridge Environmental Center today at 11 am.
The Erie Civic Music Association is brining the Glenn Miller Orchestra to town. They will perform at the Warner Theatre today at 3 pm. Tickets are $20.
The Wooden Nickel Buffalo Farm Fall Festival will be held October 8 and 14-15, each day from 11am-5pm. Fall Festival offers fun for the whole family. Admission and parking are free but donations are encouraged benefiting the Edinboro Lions Club. They’ll have face painting, wagon ride and the mini petting zoo featuring Sierra, the friendly Bison. We will have pumpkins, squash, hay bales and corn stalks for sale for Halloween and fall decorating. Mickey’s famous pumpkin and apple pies will be for sale. Made from local pumpkins and apples, these pies don’t stick around long. Come view all the beauty that northwestern Pennsylvania offers with a peaceful country backdrop and the majestic Bison roaming in the fields. The Buffalo Grill will be serving up delicious Buffalo fare cafeteria style.
There are some great family films playing on the Big Green Screen on Tuesdays in October at the Tom Ridge Enviromental Center. All films will be shown at 6:15 pm. On October 10 it’s Free Willy, on October 17 it’s ET- The Extra Terrestrial and on October 24 it’s The Wizard of OZ. All tickets are $4.
The Erie Zoo 18th annual Zoo Boo runs October 13-30, 6-9 pm nightly. Admission is $4.50 for adults (ages 12 and up), $3 for kids 2-11 with children under 2 admitted free.
The Erie Chamber Orchestra, under the direction of Bruce Morton Wright, and in residency at Gannon University, will present the second concert of its 29th Anniversary Season on October 13, 2006 in the Mary, Seat of Wisdom Chapel at Gannon University, 512 Peach Street, Erie, PA at 7:30 pm. The featured soloist will be Saxophonist Patrick Jones. The concert will consist of performances of the Joseph Haydn’s Symphony No 6 Le Matin/ Jacques Ibert - Concertino da Camera for Alto Saxophone and the Joseph Haydn Symphony No 83 in g (La Poule) (Paris.) You are cordially invited to attend this performance. The concert is free of charge; however, because of the popularity of these events, seating in Mary, Seat of Wisdom Chapel is somewhat limited and is on a first come, first served basis.
Internationally recognized autism expert Mark L Sundberg, PhD, will be visiting the Dr Gertrude Barber National Institute on Thursday and Friday, October 19 and 20, for a two-day seminar. The topic of his program is “Recent Advances in the use of Verbal Behavior for Language Assessment and Intervention for Children with Autism.” Registration fee for professionals is $275 and $100 for family members and students. The seminar is approved for Continuing Education Credits for Psychologists, Applied Behavior Analysts, Speech Language Pathologists and school personnel. Jr’s Last Laugh Comedy Club 3rd Annual Laugh Your Sash Off takes place October 19. Tickets are only $10 and Jr’s is generously donating half of the proceeds to Girl Scouts of Penn Lakes Council. Sign up now, only 300 seats are available. The entire club is reserved for Girl Scout parents, adult Girl Scouts, their family and friends. Come early for dinner and drinks, the kitchen opens at 5 pm. The headliner will perform at 7:30 pm.
Celebrate Halloween at the 46th annual Holiday Festival and Spaghetti Dinner sponsored by the Dr Gertrude A Barber National Institute on Sunday, Oct 29 from 11 am - 5 pm. Kids and families will love “Barber Boo,” a celebration of free activities such as games and crafts, hay rides, and trick or treating through the Barber National Institute. Bingo, games of chance, theme basket raffles and Christmas crafts for adults.
