Pennsylvania State Police released the name of the man shot and killed on Saturday in the parking lot of Lazer Tag at Splash Lagoon. The man was indetified as Jesus Mancilla aka Edward Pina, an illegal immigrant living in Ashtabula, Ohio. The usupect in the shooting is 17 year old Donnie Swift of Highland, Michigan.

Erie PA native M J Kennedy will be inducted into the Salina (Kansas) Business Hall of Fame on Wednesday. Kennedy wasn’t the first certified public accountant in Kansas, but was pretty close, having held Certificate No 81. He was born in 1898 in Erie, PA the son of Irish immigrants who moved to Wichita when he was young. He later fought in France in WWI, and after the war worked as a truck driver with his former sergeant; after wrecking the truck, he became the company’s bookkeeper and went on to study accounting at Kansas State University. He founded the M J Kennedy and Co firm in 1932, and in 1939 brought in college friend, C L Coe, changing the firm’s name to Kennedy and Coe. The firm was housed in the Shaver-designed United Building for 70 years before moving to south Salina in 2004. Today, the company employs more than 200 accounting professionals in locations across Kansas, Oklahoma and Colorado.
The Toronto St Michael’s Majors beat the Erie Otters 7-5. Ryan O’Marra paced the Otters with two goals and an assist while Josh Kidd added a goal and two assists. Patrick Lee and Nick Palmieri scored the others. The next Otters home games take place Saturday (October 21st) when the Sarnia Sting visit the Tullio Arena in a 7:30 pm start. The Otters are guaranteeing a win (in the event of a loss everyone in attendance will receive a free ticket to a future Otters game) and The UPS Store is giving the first 1,000 children 12 and under a free Otters flashing safety button.
The North Carolina Foothills team of Jimmy Leshock and Errol Duckett won the Fishers Of Men’s 2006 Lake Erie East Regional Championship which took place in Erie over the weekend. The 126 competitors launched out of Presque Isle State Park.
The Erie Chapter of the National Association of Blacks in Criminal Justice invites all interested members of the Erie County community to attend the regularly scheduled monthly membership meetings for 2006. There is a meeting this evening, October 16 at 6 pm. They welcome all those who are committed to ensuring the representation and participation of people of color as policy makers in the administration of justice throughout this region. All meetings will be held at St James AME Church, 236 East 11th Street, Erie, Pennsylvania. The meetings are scheduled for every third Monday of each month, beginning at 6 pm. The remaining meetings for 2006 are scheduled for the following dates: October 16; November 20; and December 18. The Port Farms Pumkin Farm Harvest Festival takes place through Oct 31. Hours are Mon-Fri Noon-6 pm, Sat 11-7 and Sun Noon-7. Ticket are $3 for adults, $5 for kids 3-18 with kids under 3 admitted free.
The Erie Zoo 18th annual Zoo Boo runs through October 30, 6-9 pm nightly. Admission is $4.50 for adults (ages 12 and up), $3 for kids 2-11 with children under 2 admitted free.
“Lost Embrace” will be shown Monday, Oct 16, as part of the annual International Film Series at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College. The film begins at 7 pm in 117 Reed Union Building. Admission to the showing is free and open to the public; English subtitles have been added to the original Spanish dialogue.
The Screen Visions Film Club at Penn State Behrend with the support of TheFilmChair.com will screen the independent film “Bums” Wednesday, October 18, 2006 at 7:30 pm in the Reed Union Building McGarvey Commons. The screening is free and open to the public. Directed by the Toronto-based Butler Bros, “Bums” follows six friends as their relationships blur together, producing love, laughs and lethargy. “Bums” is an insightful and provacative look at life neither here nor there, on a day like any other day, when you don’t have a clue what you are doing but have all the time in the world to do it.
Internationally recognized autism expert Mark L Sundberg, PhD, will be visiting the Dr Gertrude Barber National Institute on Thursday and Friday, October 19 and 20, for a two-day seminar. The topic of his program is “Recent Advances in the use of Verbal Behavior for Language Assessment and Intervention for Children with Autism.” Registration fee for professionals is $275 and $100 for family members and students. The seminar is approved for Continuing Education Credits for Psychologists, Applied Behavior Analysts, Speech Language Pathologists and school personnel. Jr’s Last Laugh Comedy Club 3rd Annual Laugh Your Sash Off takes place October 19. Tickets are only $10 and Jr’s is generously donating half of the proceeds to Girl Scouts of Penn Lakes Council. Sign up now, only 300 seats are available. The entire club is reserved for Girl Scout parents, adult Girl Scouts, their family and friends. Come early for dinner and drinks, the kitchen opens at 5 pm. The headliner will perform at 7:30 pm.
“Monster Black Holes” will be the topic of the next Open House Night in Astronomy at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College. Roger Knacke, professor of physics and astronomy and director of the college’s School of Science, will present this free program at 7:30 pm Friday, Oct 20, in 101 Behrend Science Building.
The Erie Runners Club are sponsoring the 2006 Presque Isle Personal Endurance Classic on Saturday October 21 at Presque Isle State Park in Erie, PA. The purpose of this unique event is to invite any person to run/walk a distance beyond that which he/she has previously achieved, and thus establish what will be referred to as a Personal Endurance Record. This event is designed to support and assist individuals in their endurance efforts by creating a comfortable, relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Promotion of cardiovascular fitness is the prime purpose of this event. This is not a competitive race. You will be competing with yourself and your own limits and abilities, not those of others. The intent is to challenge each individual’s personal stamina by exceeding a previous distance or endurance record.
The Mercyhurst North East Office of Admissions will be holding its Fall Open House on Tuesday, Oct. 24, from 6:30-8:30 pm in the Great Room of the Michele and Tom Ridge Health and Safety Building. Classy 100 is holding an 80’s Halloween Thriller dance at Rainbow Gardens on Saturday, October 28th from 9 ‘til 1. Memories in Motion will be playing the music, and they’ll have a costuime party. Celebrate Halloween at the 46th annual Holiday Festival and Spaghetti Dinner sponsored by the Dr Gertrude A Barber National Institute on Sunday, Oct 29 from 11 am - 5 pm. “Wristcutters: A Love Story” will be shown at the Edinboro University Louis C Cole Memorial Auditorium on Wednesday, November 1 at 7:30 pm. The students of Toni and Guy in Erie, 930 Peach Street, are holding a fund raiser on November 4 from 9 am - 4:30 pm called “Healing Hands for Hunger.” This event is to raise money and donations for the Second Harvest Food Bank. For every five pounds of food you bring in you get a free five minute chair massage, also for every $5 you donate you also will receive a five minute chair massage. ALL proceeds go to the Second Harvest Food Bank. All massages will be done by students that will be supervised by their instructors.
The Goo Goo Dolls will play a concert at the Warner Theatre in Erie Tuesday December 5. Tickets are on sale now.
