Erie PA News and Events for Thursday October 19, 2006

Erie City Council yesterday held a meeting to talk about the city amusement tax. The tax raised about $36,000 for the four month period of June through September. Council had thought the tax would raise $500,000. It would have raised that amount if there were 56 months in a year. There are in fact 12 months in a year. The tax has might have cost more in lost revenue that it has collected. Revenue has been lost by the Convention Center Authority from shows not playing the Tullio Arena and the Warner Theater and by the loss of income tax revenue from employees not being needed to work those night at those venues, area restaurants, bars, etc.

Bishop Donald Trautman, Diocese of Erie, has been named as one of 178 defendants in the civil child sex abuse lawsuit brought by the family of a murdered Wisconsin man. The suit is being brought by the family of Dan O’Connell of Wisconsin, who, along with a co-worker, was shot and killed in February 2002 by a suspected pedophile priest.

Priest was without a lead singer at the time, saw the tape, flew him to England and hired him. The story was the basis for the Mark Wahlberg movie “Rock Star.”
