Erie PA News and Events for Friday October 20, 2006
The best argument against democracy is five minutes of an average Erie City Council meeting. However, they did pretty well last night electing Joseph Schember to fill the counicl seat caused by the resignation of Dr Lonnie Gatlin. Gatlin resigned for ‘health reasons’ which was a polite way of saying the actual reason which everyone is town has said was a substance abuse problem. Council received 41 applications for the seat. Schember appears to exactly what council needs - someone with a financial background. He has a bachelor’s in English and an MBA from Gannon University in Erie. He was also valedictorian for Bucknell University’s Central Atlantic Advanced School of Banking. He works at PNC Wealth Management and does a financial segment on WJET-TV.
Working a budget has been ongoing problem with council. The city currently has a $12 million budget deficit and has let politics get in the way of making cuts. A job cut means a lost vote. A few police and firefighters have been laidoff but no real cuts have been made to the numerous offices at city hall. No services such as garbage collection have been contracted out to private companies that could save the city millions a year.
