Each quarter of the year, The Erie Community Foundation Board of Trustees has two jobs: making grants from the Foundation’s unrestricted funds through a competitive grant process between local charities AND approving grants from Donor Advised and Donor Designated Funds. The Foundation’s unrestricted grant pool makes up about 40 percent of the Foundation’s assets, which now totals approximately $130 million. This quarter, the trustees will award $279,950 to 18 charities, who applied for grants to address either health or nonprofit capacity building issues. In addition, the board also approved the distribution of over $3.6 million to local charities and scholarship students on behalf of the Donor Advised and Donor Designated funds and endowments held at the Foundation. An individual or nonprofit agency interested in establishing an endowment is welcome to call Mike Batchelor, president of The Erie Community Foundation, at 814-454-0843.

I strongly agree w/ the smoking ban for restaurants. I think bars could be a little more flexible, frankly. I would support a statewide smoking ban but the governor won't address that until mid November at the earliest.

BTW: The Pittsburgh Post Gazette has an update on the Andrew Polakowski accident: http://www.post-gazette.com//pg/06297/732494-85.stm
Apparently as he was getting in, the elevator started to fall from being over-weight. Original reports made it sound as if he'd somehow been at fault.

In Pennsylvania there is no difference between a restaurant that sells liquor and a corner bar, it's the same license so they're can't really single out bars.

But there is a different license for some places which is a resort liquor license. That's what Presque Isle Downs will be getting. BUT because Erie County already had their quota of liquor licenses issued some restaurants on upper Peach received resort licenses. It'll be interesting to see which way they go if smoking is banned and resorts are exempted.

And the ban won't apply to clubs. Bars that will be hurt by the proposed ban pay taxes.Clubs don't.

By "clubs," do you mean private clubs or dance clubs (a la a bar w/ music)? At first read, I thought "dance club."

Clubs are private so that's a different monster. But I'm curious about clubs that have restaurants, like Lake Shore. Where do they fall? I assume with "restaurants," since most have some public allowances.

Posted by: Eden at October 24, 2006 7:40 PM

The dining room of the Lake Shore GC is in a private club so it would be up to them to ban smoking.

There is no such thing as a 'dance club' in the eyes of the state. They operate as a restaurant with a restaurant liquor license.
