American Resort Management
Erie Pa based American Resort Management announced an April groundbreaking for the Volcano Island Resort in Fairmont, WV. The first phase of the resort will be an $87 million indoor/ outdoor waterpark, along with a hotel and conference center. Also in the plans are a 20 screen movie theater, a variety of retail stores, restaurants, a 60-slip marina, a recreational lake and an RV park. American Resort Management will be responsible for the day-to-day operations of the hotel, conference center and waterpark portion of the project. ARM owns and operates the Surfside Outdoor Water Park in Auburn, Alabama, nationally franchised restaurants in North Carolina and Tennessee and a hotel in Auburn as well as consulting and developing water park resorts and restaurants from Colorado to Georgia. American Resort Management is the quietly and quickly becoming a major employer and player in the resort and restaurant industry.

High winds downs numerous trees in the Erie area. Crews spent much of the weekend fixing power lines and removing downed branches from roadways. Environmentalists called the downing of trees by the wind as a form of logging and protested by shaking their fists at the sky.

The Northwestern High School Marching Band took first place in the Small School 2 Class at the New York State Field Band Conference championship Sunday at the Carrier Dome.

Erie PA was listed as the 154th safest city in the United States, 217th most dangerous, in a list complied by Morgan Quitno Press.

The Mercyhurst College women’s hockey team got shutout goaltending from junior Laura Hosier and goals from three different players in turning aside Providence 3-0 Sunday at the Ice Center. The Lakers, ranked 3rd or 4th in national polls, improved to 7-0-1 overall in their best start ever. Julia Colizza, Stefanie Bourbeau and Michelle Bonello scored for the Lakers.

The Mercyhurst College men’s soccer team (16-3, 9-1) defeated Gannon (11-6-1, 5-4-1) 4-1 in the regular-season finale for both teams.

Kara Bauer, a Freshman from McDowell, had an excellent season for the Penn College Lady Wildcat soccer team. The team finished with a 9-1 record and conference championship after a 2-5-1 season a year ago.

The Erie Federal Credit Union and the Millcreek Kiwanis are holding a blood drive for the Community Blood Bank of Northwest Pennsylvania on October 30 from 2-6 pm at the Erie FCU branch at 5500 Zuck Rd. Donors will be eligible for giveaways and prizes.

The Erie Zoo 18th annual Zoo Boo runs through October 30, 6-9 pm nightly. Admission is $4.50 for adults (ages 12 and up), $3 for kids 2-11 with children under 2 admitted free.

The Port Farms Pumkin Farm Harvest Festival takes place through Oct 31. Hours are Mon-Fri Noon-6 pm, Sat 11-7 and Sun Noon-7. Ticket are $3 for adults, $5 for kids 3-18 with kids under 3 admitted free.

Belle Valley Fire Department presents it’s annual haunted house “Valley of the Ghouls” every Thursday, Friday and Saturday in October plus Monday Oct 30th. Time 7:30-11pm. Cost is $5.

Trick or Treat hours for nearly every community in the Erie area are 6-8 pm on Haloween, October 31.

The Community Blood Bank of NW PA will be passing out treats and doing the best trick of all: saving lives this Halloween. The blood bank staff will be in costume and ready to “drain the vein” of anyone daring enough to come by the BLOOD bank this Halloween. The blood supply has mostly recovered from the shortage of two weeks ago, but 800 donors are needed each week to maintain a safe blood supply in the region. Everyone who donates can enter to win a complete set of six signed and mounted Halloween prints by Erie Artist John Oless of eeriepa.com. Donors who come in costume get to enter the raffle twice! Calamari’s Squid Row is generously providing treats for donors to eat after they donate including their famous artichoke dip.

Chelsea Sexton, who helped General Motors market the EV1 battery-electric car of the 1990s and is featured with celebrities Tom Hanks and Mel Gibson in the documentary “Who Killed the Electric Car?,” will be at Mercyhurst College Wednesday, Nov 1, to introduce the film and answer questions afterward. An offering of the Guelcher Film Series at Mercyhurst, the documentary will be shown at 2 and 8 pm in the Mary D’Angelo Performing Arts Center. Sexton will also speak at noon to members of the Erie Rotary Club.

The Technology Council of Northwest Pa and the Penn State Behrend Sam and Irene Black School of Business will present Mr Toshihiro Nagamatsu, President of Shingijutsu Consulting on Wednesday, November 1, from 6-7 pm. Mr Nagamatsu, a pioneer in the field of lean manufacturing, was the project leader for lean production implementation at Toyota. He will be speaking for 30 minutes and taking questions for 30 minutes. The event will be held in the McGarvey Commons at the Reed Union on the campus of Penn State Behrend. Dr David Frew will speak on the “Gales Of November” as part of the Shipwreck Lecture Series at the Erie County Historical Society Erie Planetarium, 356 West Sixth Street, from 7-8:30 pm on Wednesday November 1. Hear tales of Lake Erie shipping disasters and awe-inspiring stories of survival. Fee is $6 for adults and $4 for kids.

“Wristcutters: A Love Story” will be shown at the Edinboro University Louis C Cole Memorial Auditorium on Wednesday, November 1 at 7:30 pm. Meet and Greet with director Goran Dukic (confirmed) and actors Shannyn Sossamon (invited) and Shea Whigham (confirmed). Tickets are $5 with Edinboro students attending for free. The annual Mercyhurst College Career Fair will be held on Thursday Nov 2 from 1 to 4 pm in the Athletic Center.

The 2006-2007 Silberman Recital Series at Allegheny College will continue with pianist Alec Chien playing “A Solo Recital of Old Favorites” on Friday, Nov 3. The concert, which begins at 7:30 pm in Ford Memorial Chapel, is free and open to the public. Chien will perform works by Franz Schubert, Robert Schumann, Frederic Chopin and Franz Liszt.

The Tony award-winning musical “Titanic” will be performed at the Erie Playhouse November 3-4, 9-12 and 15-19. Call (814) 454-2852 ext 0 for ticket information.

The students of Toni and Guy in Erie, 930 Peach Street, are holding a fund raiser on November 4 from 9 am - 4:30 pm called “Healing Hands for Hunger.” This event is to raise money and donations for the Second Harvest Food Bank. For every five pounds of food you bring in you get a free five minute chair massage, also for every $5 you donate you also will receive a five minute chair massage. ALL proceeds go to the Second Harvest Food Bank. All massages will be done by students that will be supervised by their instructors.

Gannon University will host a workshop on play therapy to be presented by Richard E Watts, PhD, a nationally known author, researcher, and clinician. “Counseling with Toys” will run from 9 am to 4 pm Friday, Nov 10 at the Avalon Hotel, 16 West Tenth Street. It will be hosted by the Gannon University Community Counseling Program and is co-sponsored by the Gamma Upsilon Chi chapter of Chi Sigma Iota, the Gannon Social Work program and School of Education, the Pennsylvania Association for Play Therapy, the North American Society for Adlerian Psychology, and the Lake Erie Adlerian Institute. Participants can qualify for six continuing education credits (CEUs) and ACT 48 hours. The cost is $50 (pre-registration by Nov 2), or $20 for students. A discount is available for members of Chi Sigma Iota. William Shakespeare’s “The Comedy of Errors,” a rollicking tale of mistaken identity and witty dialogue, will be the fall Studio Theatre performance at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College. Performances will begin at 8 pm on Friday Nov 10, Saturday Nov 11, and Wednesday Nov 15 through Saturday Nov 18. A 2 pm matinee performance will be held on Sunday, Nov 12. Tickets are $6 for adults and $4 for students; reservations can be made by calling 814-898-6304.

The rock band Lareau will play at Docksiders located at 1015 State Street in Erie on November 10. Admission is $5. The band has just completed filming its first music video with Producer’s/Director’s James Pizzaro and Aaron Doonan . The song is the title cut from their debut Rust Records release entitled ‘Changes’. Lareau is working on their second album with producers Darrin Payne and Anthony Brown at All Sound Recording Studios in Warren PA.

The All American Hot Dog and Chili Party will be held November 12 from 1-5 pm at the Huzar Club, 1122 East 10 St. This is open to the public. Hot dogs and a variety of chili’s to try. Games, Chinese auction, basket raffles, 50/50’S and fun. Proceeds benefit 12-year old Kristina King, Student Delegate of Harbor Creek. She will be going to Washington, DC April 2007 for the People to People World Leadership Forum.

The Goo Goo Dolls will play a concert at the Warner Theatre in Erie Tuesday December 5. Tickets are on sale now.

The movies for the Holiday Film Series at the Big Green Screen Theater are The Lion King (Dec 5), The Incredibles (Dec 12), the excellent 1961 version of 101 Dalmations (Dec 19) and Toy Story (Dec 26).
