Barb Dougherty, a postal carrier, was attacked by a squirrel and bitten several times while delivering mail in Oil City. Dougherty was taken by ambulance to the hospital where she was treated for bites, cuts and scratches, and given rabies shots. The squirrel was shot and will be tested for rabies.

The elevator that killed Andrew Polakowski of Erie failed brake tests. The elevator was filled to the max weight it was supposed to hold and slipped down to the bottom. At the time of the accident, it was overcrowded and over weight by over half a ton. Polakowski was suffocated when he was pinned between the top of the elevator doors and the third floor.
Cristie Horton, wife of Army Staff Sgt. Jeremy Horton of Erie, Pa., was awarded a $5,000 fall semester college grant by the Children of Fallen Soldiers Relief Fund. Horton died near Al Iskandariyah, Iraq on May 21, 2004. This young lady should never have to pay a dime for college. We owe it to her, we owe it to Jeremy.
Philadelphia Governor Ed Rendell signed the Price Gouging Act at an Erie area Country Fair. It was unclear if the location was picked to show his support of leftist Venezuela Dictator Hugo Chavez because Country Fair sells Citgo Gasoline which is owned by the Venezuela government or if it was a warning to John Catsimatidis which owns the United Refining Company, and the Country Fair and Kwik Fill chains who the Federal Trade Commission previously ordered to divest of a supermarket chain due to lack of competition.
Harrisburg, with the election near, announced a bunch of Coastal Zone Management Grants. The Lake Erie Coastal Zone is located within Erie County and includes the shorelines of major tributaries. The zone extends to the middle of the lake to the boundary with Canada and inland 900 feet within the city of Erie. The lake, one of the state ports for international shipping, also contains Presque Isle State Park. The grants are:
Erie City — $25,000 to help reforest parts of the city of Erie to help mitigate the effects of stormwater runoff and other nonpoint pollution that makes its way into Presque Isle Bay and Lake Erie.
Erie County Conservation District — $25,000 to conduct research, preliminary design work and meetings with stakeholders of several proposed routes aimed at the eventual development of this segment of the East Coast Greenway in concert with the effort being conducted by the Pennsylvania Environmental Council.
Erie County Department of Planning — $79,000 to maintain coordination with local, state and federal agencies and the general public and provide administrative support at the regional level to further Pennsylvania’s Coastal Zone Management policies.
Erie County Department of Planning — $6,600 to assist coastal municipalities with the preparation, revision and modification of Bluff Recession and Setback Act (BRSA) ordinances. Funds can also be used to monitor and implement various code enforcement activities as they apply to the administration of the BRSA throughout the Lake Erie Coastal Zone.
Erie County Health Department — $20,900 to develop a companion project to the Science Consortium Testing for new bacteria testing technology at the Tom Ridge Environmental Center. Samples will be drawn from the tributaries flowing into Lake Erie west of Presque Isle in an effort to determine the source of the pollution, as well as determine if the source is from animal or human bacteria.
Erie County Public Safety Citizens Corp. — $50,000 to help the county purchase a specialized “ice boat” emergency rescue craft that can operate in severe winter weather and help ensure the safety of people who participate in winter recreational activities on Presque Isle Beach and Lake Erie.
Erie Times-News in Education — $33,700 to develop and design 10 educational pages for monthly, full-page inserts in special newspaper features, including pages dedicated to the Lake Erie Coastal Cleanup in September 2007. Erie Times-News in Education also will partner with Lake Erie-Allegheny Earth Force to conduct educator workshops and develop subject content for the 10 issues.
Harborcreek Township — $75,000 to help construct a safe harbor at Shades Beach Park to provide boat-launch capability as well as a safe harbor for boaters caught in a storm on the open lake. This much-needed facility will serve the entire eastern sector of coastal Erie County. Currently, there are very limited facilities that can be used both for a safe harbor and as a boat launching point in the eastern part of the county.
Lake Erie-Allegheny Earth Force Inc. — $40,000 to develop the next in a series of environmental education projects designed to enhance environmental awareness and a strong stewardship ethic among the region’s youth. Components will include elements dedicated to addressing nonpoint source pollution with an emphasis on sustaining healthy, freshwater ecosystems.
Northwest Tri-County Intermediate Unit — $25,000 to continue the Northwest Tri-County Intermediate Unit Regional Summer School of Excellence. Students will work with expert scientists and teaching assistants using modern equipment at Presque Isle Bay and Lake Erie. This will provide hands-on university laboratory and field-based environmental health research and career exploration for high school students.
PA-Lake Erie Watershed Association — $3,500 to develop, publicize and conduct at least two workshops for property owners whose properties are located along the bluffs throughout Erie County. Topics include best management practices to help preserve the integrity of the bluffs along the Lake Erie shoreline and what regular homeowners can do to help preserve the bluffs.
Pennsylvania “Sea Grant”/Penn State University — $50,000 to inventory, research and compile data collected over the years relative to Presque Isle Bay with the intent of developing a long-term management plan for the health and welfare of the bay.
The Collegiate Golden Harvest, the first combined food drive conducted by Gannon University, Mercyhurst College and Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, netted 9,167 pounds of food for the Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwestern Pennsylvania last Saturday, Oct 28. Despite the wind and rain, hundreds of volunteers from the three colleges went door-to-door collecting nonperishable food items and manned drop-off stations at five sites throughout Erie County. Although donations are still arriving, the early count, according to the food bank, is Gannon, 4,279 pounds; Mercyhurst, 3,679; and Penn State Behrend, 1,209 pounds.
City Councilwoman Jessica Horan-Kunco has put together a public meeting scheduled for today, November 1 at 4:30 pm for the Proposed Skatepark. The City of Erie received a $82,900 state grant and a $65,000 federal grant to build a skate park in Erie at Bayview Park. That was over 2 years ago. Nothing has been done to actually build it. If you support the skatpark, please add your name to the peition.
Chelsea Sexton, who helped General Motors market the EV1 battery-electric car of the 1990s and is featured with celebrities Tom Hanks and Mel Gibson in the documentary “Who Killed the Electric Car?,” will be at Mercyhurst College Wednesday, Nov 1, to introduce the film and answer questions afterward. An offering of the Guelcher Film Series at Mercyhurst, the documentary will be shown at 2 and 8 pm in the Mary D’Angelo Performing Arts Center. Sexton will also speak at noon to members of the Erie Rotary Club.
The Technology Council of Northwest Pa and the Penn State Behrend Sam and Irene Black School of Business will present Mr Toshihiro Nagamatsu, President of Shingijutsu Consulting on Wednesday, November 1, from 6-7 pm. Mr Nagamatsu, a pioneer in the field of lean manufacturing, was the project leader for lean production implementation at Toyota. He will be speaking for 30 minutes and taking questions for 30 minutes. The event will be held in the McGarvey Commons at the Reed Union on the campus of Penn State Behrend. Dr David Frew will speak on the “Gales Of November” as part of the Shipwreck Lecture Series at the Erie County Historical Society Erie Planetarium, 356 West Sixth Street, from 7-8:30 pm on Wednesday November 1. Hear tales of Lake Erie shipping disasters and awe-inspiring stories of survival. Fee is $6 for adults and $4 for kids.
“Wristcutters: A Love Story” will be shown at the Edinboro University Louis C Cole Memorial Auditorium on Wednesday, November 1 at 7:30 pm. Meet and Greet with director Goran Dukic (confirmed) and actors Shannyn Sossamon (invited) and Shea Whigham (confirmed). Tickets are $5 with Edinboro students attending for free. The annual Mercyhurst College Career Fair will be held on Thursday Nov 2 from 1 to 4 pm in the Athletic Center.
The 2006-2007 Silberman Recital Series at Allegheny College will continue with pianist Alec Chien playing “A Solo Recital of Old Favorites” on Friday, Nov 3. The concert, which begins at 7:30 pm in Ford Memorial Chapel, is free and open to the public. Chien will perform works by Franz Schubert, Robert Schumann, Frederic Chopin and Franz Liszt.

The students of Toni and Guy in Erie, 930 Peach Street, are holding a fund raiser on November 4 from 9 am - 4:30 pm called “Healing Hands for Hunger.” This event is to raise money and donations for the Second Harvest Food Bank. For every five pounds of food you bring in you get a free five minute chair massage, also for every $5 you donate you also will receive a five minute chair massage. ALL proceeds go to the Second Harvest Food Bank. All massages will be done by students that will be supervised by their instructors.

The Erie Art Museum invites singers and non-singers alike to a throat singing workshop with internationally touring Tuvan throat singers Chirgilchin on Wednesday, November 8 at 7 pm in the Erie Art Museum Annex. Cost is $5 per person. Workshop attendees will receive a $5 off tickets to Chirgilchin’s Nov 9 performance. Throat singing is an extraordinary vocal form in which one singer produces two or more voices at the same time, one voice harmonizing with the others. A performance is scheduled for Nov 9 at 8 pm in the Erie Art Museum Annex. Tickets are $15 for general admission, $12 for Erie Art Museum and Jazz Erie members and $10 for students and seniors. Gannon University will host a workshop on play therapy to be presented by Richard E Watts, PhD, a nationally known author, researcher, and clinician. “Counseling with Toys” will run from 9 am to 4 pm Friday, Nov 10 at the Avalon Hotel, 16 West Tenth Street. It will be hosted by the Gannon University Community Counseling Program and is co-sponsored by the Gamma Upsilon Chi chapter of Chi Sigma Iota, the Gannon Social Work program and School of Education, the Pennsylvania Association for Play Therapy, the North American Society for Adlerian Psychology, and the Lake Erie Adlerian Institute. Participants can qualify for six continuing education credits (CEUs) and ACT 48 hours. The cost is $50 (pre-registration by Nov 2), or $20 for students. William Shakespeare’s “The Comedy of Errors,” a rollicking tale of mistaken identity and witty dialogue, will be the fall Studio Theatre performance at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College. Performances will begin at 8 pm on Friday Nov 10, Saturday Nov 11, and Wednesday Nov 15 through Saturday Nov 18. A 2 pm matinee performance will be held on Sunday, Nov 12. The rock band Lareau will play at Docksiders located at 1015 State Street in Erie on November 10. Admission is $5. The band has just completed filming its first music video with Producer’s/Director’s James Pizzaro and Aaron Doonan . The song is the title cut from their debut Rust Records release entitled ‘Changes’. Lareau is working on their second album with producers Darrin Payne and Anthony Brown at All Sound Recording Studios in Warren PA.
The All American Hot Dog and Chili Party will be held November 12 from 1-5 pm at the Huzar Club, 1122 East 10 St. This is open to the public. Hot dogs and a variety of chili’s to try. Games, Chinese auction, basket raffles, 50/50’S and fun. Proceeds benefit 12-year old Kristina King, Student Delegate of Harbor Creek. United Refining claims their gasoline is refined from North American Oil. Most of it comes from Canada. They supposedly purchased the rights to use the Citgo logo.
