Erie PA News and Events for Friday November 3, 2006

Posted by Dennis on November 3, 2006

Erie received it’s first sizable snow storm. The city and the airport, where the official totals are measured, got about 3 inches. There was about 9 inches near the Millcreek Mall and a foot was connon in other places. I think I heard the phrase “This sucks” over 100 times yesterday. O course people don’t bother to slow down and there were a ton of fender benders and the ditches were a magnet for cars, trucks and even one PennDOT snowplow. There were a ton of kids sledding down the hills at Frontier Park.

There was a huge over-reaction to the legal notice in the paper yesterday placed by the Department of Health and Human Services that Saint Vincent could possibly lose their ability to take Medicare/ Medicaid patients. Sounds like there was a government employee on a power trip who wanted to show what they could possibly do. Here’s the story. Like most hospitals, St V’s is short on nurses. On one occasion they didn’t have someone to keep an eye on a patient. The patient was on suicide watch and slipped out of the hospital. As I recall, the person was found a short time later. Mistake, yep but the the problem has been addressed.

The schools were asked to have students come up with creative ways to raise money for the challenge. The money raised will be used to support the future expansion of the Playground in the Waterworks area. Two sets of competitions were put in place, one for the City of Erie Schools and a second for private schools. The two first place winners were St. Luke’s Elementary and Grover Cleveland Elementary. The two runner-up awards went to Harding Elementary and Montessori Regional Charter School. Winning schools each receive 250 tickets to the Big Green Screen Theater at the Tom Ridge Environmental Center and a Presque Isle Sculpture created by local artist, Evan Everhart to display at their school.

The GLIAC isn't a "crappy" conference. It's just that Gannon and Merychurst can't hang with these tough teams. It's too bad GU and Hurst can't join the PSAC - that'd be a good fit to start regional rivalries. Whatever happens, both GU and Hurst need to go to a new conference together.
