Seven years ago today, on November 10 1999 the City of Erie v Pap’s A M (“Kandyland”) reached the US Supreme Court. The question was - does Erie, Pennsylvania’s public indecency ordinance, as applied to prohibit nude dancing, violate the First Amendment’s guarantee of free expression? The conclusion in an opinion delivered by Justice Sandra Day O’Connor was no.
As Mercyhurst College grows its newest campus in the west county, it seems only fitting that among the curriculum offerings at Mercyhurst West is a new program in facilities and property management. West’s associate degree program in facilities and property management, along with a bachelor’s degree program at the Erie campus, are the only such programs in the area. Four students are already enrolled in the program at West, and an Introduction to Facility Management course will be offered during the winter term, which starts Nov 27. A goal in the near future is to have West’s program approved by the International Facility Management Association (IFMA), so that upon successful completion the program, students will be able to take the test to become a Facility Management Professional (FMP). This can be used as a springboard for obtaining the Certified Facility Manager (CFM) designation, which proves expertise in the field, and requires work experience. The most unique part of West’s program is that students will be able to experience facility and properties management first-hand, as the physical plant of West comes to fruition, said Larry Kownacki, instructor of the program at West. West’s future campus, to be located on 405 acres of land in Girard, will be centered around sustainability, incorporating Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) “green” initiatives into its design, construction and operation. This rapidly growing approach to building promotes sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection, and indoor environmental quality.

For the second year in a row, Mercyhurst College graduate students in applied intelligence, forensic and biological anthropology, organizational leadership, special education and administration of justice will assemble to celebrate the term’s end and pack gift boxes for soldiers overseas called Operation Reindeer. Last year, nearly 100 grad students brought baked goods, movies, video games and reading materials to the “packing party.” The gift boxes were sent to soldiers in Iraq, where US Army Lt Katie Breckenridge O’Leary, daughter of Mercyhurst’s own Jim and Missy Breckenridge, was stationed. This year, the boxes will be headed to Bagram, Afghanistan, chosen because of another Mercyhurst connection. For nearly two years, organizational leadership grad student Teresa Gardner of Franklin, Pa, has been sending packages overseas to her aunt, Capt. Lucia Lombardi, who is on her third tour of duty with the US Army, currently assigned to Bravo Company, Division Support Troops Battalion, 10th Mountain Division, Bagram, Afghanistan. Lombardi of Cranberry, Pa, has another Erie connection. She is a graduate of Gannon University, where she majored in criminal justice and was in the ROTC. An intelligence officer, Lombardi and her company are tasked with providing timely and accurate intelligence to the Division Command Staff for all of Afghanistan. This critical information allows the leadership to make decisions that support and safeguard the troops on the ground. For more information about Operation Reindeer, contact Kristin Austin at 824-2985.
