Thanks to Kara Rhodes at the Times-News for getting some action on an important issue facing Erieites - the beer cups at the Tullio Arena. In his October 5 post Nick pointed out that the large and small beer cups hold the same amount of liquid. Large beer - $4, small beer $3. In her article today, she wrote she had a pour test done for executive director Casey Wells. Wells got concessions manager Victor Sossong to change the size of the large cups, which should be arriving soon. Kudos to Kara. The large is still going to be a rip-off so keep getting the small.
Former Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge of Erie said he is writing a book with his thoughts on homeland security. Let the competition between publishers commence.

The Vicary Foundation of Erie (Thomas and Cheryl Vicary), with an annually renewed grant of $2,000, has enabled the establishment a children’s libraries in Centre County, Pennsylvania at The Women’s Resource Center, Park Forest Day Nursery, Stormbreak, Zerby Gap Family Works and Stepping Stones Transitional Living. The youth served by these agencies and by Centre County Children and Youth are able, once a year, to request a book by title to keep as a personal gift. And why aren’t we doing this in Erie??
Following the completion of a highly successful capital campaign, Dr John McCandless has announced his retirement as vice president for development and alumni affairs at Allegheny College. Succeeding McCandless in the position of vice president is Marjorie Klein, formerly the associate vice president for development and alumni affairs. McCandless, who served as vice president for development and alumni affairs since 1998, served the college through its most recent fundraising campaign, “Tradition and Transformation,” which raised $115.2 million. Klein began her service to Allegheny in 2000 as director of development and major gifts and became associate vice president for development and alumni affairs in 2005. Preceding her time at Allegheny she was director of market development with Stargate Industries (formerly ErieNet). Prior to that she held a variety of posts at Gannon University, including executive director of development and alumni relations and director of alumni relations. Klein holds a bachelor of arts in theatre and communication arts from Gannon University. She also completed the Management Development Program with Harvard University’s Institute for Higher Education.
Nominations are due in for the Third Annual Generation-E Leadership Awards. Anyone in the community can submit a nomination. This event highlights the capabilities and energy of young Erie leaders, age 21 to 39, who dedicate energy, talent and time to improving the Erie region. This event is coordinated by Yep! (Young Erie Professionals), an affiliate of the Technology Council of Northwest PA, and will be held Friday, March 30, 2007, at the Avalon Hotel. Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, now enrolls more than 4,000 students, an increase of 300 compared to fall 2005, according to Penn State’s official fall 2006 enrollment numbers released this week. Total enrollment is 4,046 students, including a record class of 1,000 plus first-year students. Of the 4,046 total students, 3,480 are registered as full time, 359 as part time and 207 students are enrolled in Penn State Behrend’s online Master of Project Management and Intercollege MBA programs. The college has 3,675 undergraduate students, 93 percent of whom are full time, and 371 graduate students.

Kyle Rogers of Erie scored a goal for the Niagara University men’s hockey in their 7-3 win over Alabama-Huntsville.
The Mercyhurst College wrestling team will host the National Catholic Invitational today in the MAC starting at 10 am. The seven-team invitational will feature Division I opponents Sacred Heart University and Duquesne University along with Division III power John Carroll. The other teams are cross town rival Gannon University along with Mercyhurst-Northeast and first year program Notre Dame College. Admission is $4 for adults and $2 for students. Doors will open at 9 am.
Bill Elias coaches the Gannon University for the last time today. He relinquished coaching duties to concentrate on being Athletic Director full time. Erie Cathedral Prep coach Donald Holl appears to be the leading candicate for the Gannon job. Holl served as assistant head coach/ offensive coordinator at Gannon University for six seasons prior to high school head coaching jobs at Prep and Kiski.
Amanda Dacek (Middleburg Heights, Ohio/Berea) and Shanna Thompson (Shaker Heights, Ohio/Shaker Heights) have signed national letters of intent to continue their academic and women’s basketball careers at Gannon University in the fall of 2007.
The Philadelphia Catholic League will soon announce they will be joining the PIAA.
The Erie Otters of the Ontario Hockey League return to action tonight in the first of back-to-back home games at the Tullio Arena. Saturday at 7:30 pm it’s the Otters and the Sudbury Wolves with the first 1,000 fans receiving a CD wallet courtesy of EMTA. Jonathan Laniel (Lah-nyell) is scheduled to get the start between the pipes for the Otters. Sunday in a special 6 pm start the Otters take on the Windsor Spitfires.
Each Saturday the have something special happening at the Experience Erie Children’s Museum. Today from 11 am to 3 pm, in honor of Veteran’s Day, children can come and learn about the different branches of the Armed Forces. This event is free with Museum admission of $4.50 per person, free to members.
There is an “Introduction to GPS for Hunters” workshop today at 11 am at the Tom Ridge Environmental Center. There is a $15 fee, with registration required by calling (814) 833-7424. Just in time for hunting season! GPS is the hottest new toy in navigation, and can be very valuable for hunters. If you’re a complete novice or just beginning, come to this introductory workshop in making the most of your GPS unit. A limited number of GPS units will be available for use, and participants are encouraged to bring their own Garmin, Magellan or other basic GPS. Program includes classroom instruction, hearty lunch and outdoor, hands-on exercises.
The Erie area FIRST LEGO League Robotics competition sponsored by Lord Corporation and the Millcreek School District will be held on November 11 at 9 am at Walnut Creek Middle School, 5901 Sterrettania Rd. The event is open to the public. Students age 9 - 14 years old from Erie and the surrounding tri-state area build, program and then compete in a task driven competition. Using LEGO bricks and other elements such as sensors, motors, and gears, teams gain hands-on experience in engineering and computer programming principles as they construct and program their unique robot inventions. The annual Veterans Day Parade steps off at Vets Stadium on November 11 at 9:30 am and travels south to the Erie VA Medical Center. At 11 am the Annual Veterans Day Ceremony will be held at the Armed Forces Reserve Center, Old French Road. The community is encouraged to attend to honor our nation’s heroes.
The Mercyhurst College Institute of Geography Education will host its third annual Geography Challenge for eighth grade students enrolled in Erie County schools on Saturday, Nov 11. Preliminaries will be held on campus in various classrooms beginning at 10 am, with the 10 finalists set to compete at 1 pm in Taylor Little Theatre, an event that is free and open to the public. The winner and runner-up will be flown to Space Camp at the US Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, Ala, where they will participate in some of the same training as the shuttle astronauts.
A benefit for homeless Vererans will be held today at the VFW Post 3390 at 2517 Ash St at 6 pm. All are welcome, you need not be a member. Any donation you are able to make would be greatly appreciated. A chinese auction, games of chance and plenty of entertainment are in store.

The All American Hot Dog and Chili Party will be held November 12 from 1-5 pm at the Huzar Club, 1122 East 10 St. This is open to the public. Hot dogs and a variety of chili’s to try. Games, Chinese auction, basket raffles, 50/50’S and fun. Proceeds benefit 12-year old Kristina King, Student Delegate of Harbor Creek. She will be going to Washington, DC April 2007 for the People to People World Leadership Forum.
Katie Beckwith was severely burnt when a road side bomb exploded while serving in Iraq. The friends of Katie Beckwith are having a fundraiser for the family to help them be with Katie during her recovery. The event will be held November 12 from 1-7 pm at the Holy Rosary Gym, 28th and East Ave. Donation is $5. Food is included in the price of admission. There will also be a silent auction, bake sale, and music. Come out and let’s all help out a home town veteran and her family.
The Allegheny College Jazz Band and Trombone Choir will present a concert on Sunday, Nov 12 at 3:15 pm in the lobby of Henderson Campus Center. Pre-concert music by Jim Froman and Friends will begin at 2:30. The event is free and open to the public.
Box of Light Theatre brings its multi-dimensional stage performance of “Pavlov’s Clown” to Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, on Tuesday, Nov 14. The one-hour lunchtime show will begin at 12:30 pm in the Reed Union Building’s Bruno’s Cafe. A presentation of the college’s Rhythms of Life cultural series, “Pavlov’s Clown” is free and open to the public. A full menu of hot and cold lunch items will be available for purchase at the cafe.

The opening reception of “Victorian Holidays: A Holiday Heritage Festival” will be held November 16 at the Erie County Historical Society Watson-Curtze Mansion, 356 W 6 St, from 6-9 pm. Cost is $20, from reservations call (814) 454-1813. Victorian Holidays is a multi-faceted exhibit which has been annual tradition for the Erie County Historical Society for more than 25 years. The 2006 exhibit, titled a Holiday Heritage Festival, features traditional seasonal decorations from several ethnic-oriented groups. Exhibit runs through December 31.
Gannon University’s Erie Chamber Orchestra, Conducted and directed by Bruce Morton Wright, will perform on Friday, November 17. The performance will feature the Edinboro University Singers. It is free and open to the public and will begin at 7:30 pm at the Erie Central High auditorium, 3325 Cherry Street.
The Goo Goo Dolls will play a concert at the Warner Theatre in Erie Tuesday December 5. Tickets are on sale now.
Organizers of the Heart of the Alleghenies Folk Music Festival will present a special afternoon of workshops in the folk music tradition on November 19 from 1-3 pm at the Erie Historical Society Watson-Curtze Mansion, 356 West 6 St. Learn to play a mountain dulcimer, with no musical talent required. Mountain dulcimers will be provide, however participants are encouraged to bring their own if possible. Reservations required. Cost is $30.
The next production at the Roadhouse Theater is “SantaLand Diaries” and “Season’s Greetings.” Playwright, author, and National Public Radio commentator David Sedaris compose two entertaining, irreverently witty essays which were adapted for the stage by Joe Mantello. The production opens with a post-show reception the evening after Thanksgiving, Friday, November 24 and continues through Saturday, December 23. Two facets of the choral music program at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, will be showcased at its annual fall concert on Tuesday, Nov 28. The concert will begin at 8 pm in the McGarvey Commons of the Reed Union Building. The College Choir and the Studio Singers both will perform under the direction of Daniel Barnard, lecturer in music. Tickets for the concert are $5 for adults and $3 for students and are available at the door or at the Reed Union Building information desk.
Shangahi Quartet, a versatile ensemble known for its passionate musicality, impressive technique, and multicultural innovation, will perform at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, on Friday, Dec 1. Their lunchtime appearance, part of Music at Noon: The Logan Series, will begin at noon in the McGarvey Commons of the Reed Union Building. It is free and open to the public.
