Erie PA News and Events for Sunday December 10, 2006

Unlike scandals at Enron and Tyco, where fraud disguised huge losses, Rent-Way’s deceptions exaggerated growth.
There is a great, Pulitzer Prize Explanatory Reporting great, story in today’s New York Times by Charles Duhigg on the downfall of Erie based Rentway.
Renway was a growth company. When growth slowed, three company officials cooked the books so it would appear the company was still growing at an exponential rate. Founder and CEO Bill Morgenstern made the decision to reveal everything. The openness even surprised SEC officials. The company survived the scandal but was saddled with a ton of debt and high interest rates. Just as it seemed they would make through and stay in business, hurricane damage closed 2 dozen stores and business slowed at the other stores. The company was put up for sale and Rent-A-Center bought them out.
Morgenstern got a bad rap. He and his family were harassed to the point where they didn’t want to leave their home. After the sale, the Morgenstern family moved to North Carolina.

State Senator Jane Earll of Erie could be running for Pennsylvania Supreme Court next year, at least that’s the speculation by Peter Jackson in his AP story. She does have state-wide name recognition having run for Lieutenant Governor and voted against the pay raise for legislators and judges.
There is now a blog of happenings in Warren PA - Blog Warren. Welcome aboard.
Erie was mentioned in another New York Times article today. There is going to be a public hearing on a project by Con Edison in the NYC area. When one business owner, Paul D’Ambrosio the owner of Hudsons at 3713 Riverdale Avenue in Riverdale (the Bronx), heard about the hearing, he said “Where are they going to have it? Erie, Pennsylvania?” It was a reference to the trial of Monsignor Charles Kavanagh, a NY Archdiocese Catholic priest accused of sexual assault, which was held in Erie to keep down publicity and public awareness.
The heathens that run the City of Titusville have settled a lawsuit on behalf of Lighthouse Christian Center against the city. The city has a “church-free” zoning ordinance which was meant to keep churches out of Titusville’s C-1 commercial zone. It was probably intended to keep non-profits out of a commercial area but it sure hasn’t designed or thought out very well. Lighthouse will be allowed to rent space to move to a downtown facility where it can operate its outreach program, which is expected to include a Christian bookstore, television ministry, outreach to teens, and church services.

Kelly Geoffrey scored twice and added an assist to lead the Erie Otters to a 6-2 win over the Kingston Frontenacs in an Ontario Hockey League game played tonight in front of 3,814 at the Tullio Arena.
