Dave Eggers’s latest book “What Is the What” in Number 25 on the New York Times’ extended best seller list this week. Today it’s number 174 on Amazon.com. It’s the story of Valentino Achak Deng, a Sudanese “Lost Boy” who is attending Allegheny College. It’s not a conventional biography though, it’s a fictionalization of Deng’s life so the author could add details and conversations.

Gannon University President Antoine M Garibaldi, PhD, yesterday confered some 225 degrees at the University’s Winter Commencement ceremony at the Hammermill Center. The graduates include 10 associate degree recipients, 71 bachelor’s, 143 master’s, and one doctoral degree recipient. In addition, five students graduated summa cum laude, eight magna cum laude, one cum laude, and three with academic honors.

As of December 5, Mercyhurst College had received 2,089 applications, up 62 percent over this time last year. All necessary documentation has been submitted by 913 of those applicants, and 630 have already been notified of their acceptance (up 18 percent over last year). Since the admissions team is aiming to enroll a freshman class of at least 705, similar to last year, the bigger applicant pool means the college can continue to improve the profile of its incoming class - increasing its academic quality, as well as its diversity. Admissions Director JP Cooney stated first contacts are often made online. Hint to Gannon with their outdated, seldom updated, broken link galore site - first contacts are often made online.

The Pittsburgh Inn at 3725 West Lake Rd is for sale. The asking price is $347,000.

Chair of the National Organization on Disability (NOD), Former Secretary of Homeland Security, and Former Governor of Pennsylvania, Tom Ridge of Erie, will be interviewed by Modavox’s VoiceAmerica Network host Joyce Bender on “Disability Matters” Tuesday, December 12, 2006. Ridge will discuss his past and present work in support of the Americans with Disabilities Act and the employment of people with disabilities. This interview on “Disability Matters” with Joyce Bender will broadcast at 2 pm Eastern, on the VoiceAmerica Channel.

Jessie May Champlin joined Bassett Healthcare’s Division of Orthopedics in Cooperstown NY as a certified physician assistant. Champlin recently completed the physician assistant program at Gannon University in Erie, PA. Champlin obtained her Bachelor of Science and Master of Science from Gannon University. She is certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants.

Pennsylvania ranks second in the nation in the number of tree farms growing Christmas trees with 1,458. Only one common variety of Christmas tree is native to Pennsylvania, the Eastern white pine.

Read about the Limited Edition Barbie Dolls for the Erie area market, if you have a sense of humor.

The Mercyhurst College women’s hockey team, the Number 1 team in Division I, scored three power play goals and one shorthanded Sunday to defeat Robert Morris 5-0 and conclude the 2006 portion of the schedule. The Lakers improved to 16-1-1 overall and to 2-0-0 in College Hockey America. Mercyhurst won’t play again until January 5 and 6 when Cornell visits Erie.

My wish for the new year is that the AD’s from Gannon and Mercyhurst get together and form a league more appropriate for their schools other than the Michigan based GLIAC. Here are a few schools that could be in the conference: Lake Erie College in Painesville Ohio which just announced they are going Division II, Central State University in Wilberforce Ohio, Tiffin University in Tiffin Ohio, Ashland University in Ashland Ohio, Pitt Johnstown in Johnstown PA, University of the District of Columbia in Washington DC, Columbia Union College in Takoma Park MD.

Marie Nedley of Connellsville has signed a letter of intent to continue her academic and swimming career at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania.

The Gem City Concert Band will be presenting its annual Holiday Concert at St John’s Parish Center, adjacent to St. John Lutheran’s Church, 2216 Peach Street. The performance will be on Tuesday, December 12 at 7:30 pm and will include many holiday favorites and a Christmas Carol Sing-Along. Plenty of off-street parking is available. The concert is free and open to the public; free-will offerings will be accepted.

The Holiday Toy Drive (benefiting SafeNet Erie) and Gift Wrapping Party will be held at the Plymouth Tavern, 1109 State Street, on Wednesday, December 13 at 6 pm. Contact Melissa Newell at melissamnewell(at)gmail.com for information regarding the Toy Drive. Yep! has partnered with United Way Young Leaders for this event. Please join them in providing gifts for local families currently being sheltered.

As part of Weaths Across America, 6 wreaths laid at the Erie Soldiers and Sailors Home Cemetery in Honor of the 5 branches of service and POW/MIA on December 14 at noon.

The Presque Isle Chorus, a member of Sweet Adelines International, will be holding their Christmas Concert on December 18 at 7:30 pm at the Trinity Luthern Church, 14 East 38 St. Admission is free and everyone is welcome.

It's a shame the Pittsburgh Inn hasn't been successful in a long time. Would be nice to see more locally owned restaurants instead of 10,000 different chains.

Being that I do not have a MySpace account -- the Barbie commentary was absolutely hilarious. Since I no longer live in Erie it was great to recall memories that support the piece. Thanks for the chuckle!

In reference to the Mercyhurst admissions brief....Gannon will never get a clue. They think what they're doing is great. Sure, if their goal is to have enrollment stay the same or decline over the years, then that's fine.

Mercyhurst is the better of the two schools in the city.
