Erie PA News and Events for Thursday December 14, 2006

Erie City Council passed a first reading of the $40 landlord tax. Five morons voted in favor of the measure. Five lazy people, most likely campaign workers for council members or the mayor, plus support staff will be hired to enforce and inspect rental properties. When this dumb idea was first dreamed up, the thought was a way to generate revenue for the city. Instead, it will just add to the financial burden on the Erie taxpayers.

The PNC Foundation made a $20,000 grant to the Erie Art Museum’s $9 million capital campaign. “With PNC’s support we have moved beyond our half-way mark. We have commitments for $4.7 million. We are right on track. PNC is a community-minded neighbor consistently providing leadership and resources to support the region’s cultural assets. We are very grateful,” said Erie Art Museum Director John Vanco. The planned $9 million capital project consists of a link between the Museum’s Old Customs House Building on State Street and the Museum Annex, which fronts on both State and East Fifth Streets. Included will be four major galleries, a number of smaller galleries, a 250-person performance space, a public meeting space at a new unified entrance, and other visitor amenities. “The Erie Art Museum is the largest and most significant visual arts program in the Northwestern PA region. It is the resource for the visual arts. The Art Museum’s programs have far outstripped its physical space. Senator Earll’s commitment takes us closer to our vision of a regional arts center,” said Kirk Steehler, DO, capital campaign chairman and Erie Art Museum Board Member. According to Steehler, $6 million in local funds are being sought, as well as $3 million in capital grants from the State. To date, the Museum has secured $2.7 million in local funds including more than $1 million from the Museum’s Board of Directors and $2 million in capital grants from the State.
The 36 congregations comprising the Episcopal Diocese of Northwestern Pennsylvania are seeking a new bishop specifically knowledgeable about working with small congregations and who will take an active role in the administration and pastoral life of the diocese, according to a profile developed by the episcopal search committee and introduced during the annual convention in October. The period for nominations closes Dec 25. The search committee will release the names of three to five nominees during the first week of April. With about 280,000 residents in the metropolitan region, Erie is the diocese’s largest population center. Total population of the region is 938,712, according to the profile. The diocese recently underwent a period of internal discernment and is coming to terms with the fact that it is primarily composed of small family-sized and pastoral-sized congregations, spread out over a significant geographical range, according to the profile. Northwestern Pennsylvania has been without episcopal oversight since Bishop Robert Rowley announced his intention to take terminal sabbatical leave in a letter to the diocese in July. If this bunch of "morons" actually do their job and inspect properties, maybe the city would be rid of some of its absolutely LOVELY slum properties owned by crooked landlords. Ever care to think if this city cleaned up its appearance it may actually ATTRACT people? Isn't that a good thing? I mean, correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't that what Erie has been trying to do? Clean up its act and attract people?

Property conditions are already the job of the Code Enforcement officers. They are the ones that should be taking care of that problem.
And if a tenant feels their place isn't livable, they can call or go to their district magistrate. Their rent is placed in an escrow account until until their is an investigation and things are cleared up.
