General McLane beat Pottsville 28-23 to win the Pennsylvania Class AAA football championship. Tough as nails Drew Astorino had 172 yards rushing including a long touchdown run after he twisted his ankle. Astorino has given a verbal commitment to Kent State but a couple of people have said Duke has offered him a 4 year, full ride scholarship. If he was a bit tall than 5’ 10” every college in the country would be chasing after him.
Calling hours for Governor Raymond P Shafer will be held on today, Saturday, December 16 from 2 to 4 pm and 6 to 8 pm at the Waid Funeral Home, 581 Chestnut Street, in Meadville. A funeral service will be held in Allegheny College’s Ford Chapel on Sunday, December 17, at 1:30 pm (doors open at 1 pm), followed by a military burial service (family only). The funeral service will be simulcast in Allegheny College’s Shafer Auditorium, which is named in honor of Governor Shafer. North Main Street will be closed to public traffic prior to and during the funeral service, with traffic re-routed to Park Avenue. An information table will be located in front of the Tippie Alumni Center at Cochran Hall on North Main Street. Parking for the public is available at the Robertson Athletic Complex on Park Avenue. Free shuttle service will be provided continuously beginning at noon from Robertson to the Ford Chapel and Shafer Auditorium.
Railpower Technologies (TSX: P) announced that Philip Garcia has resigned from the Company’s Board of Directors due to work related reasons. Mr Garcia has been a director of Railpower and a member of the Audit Committee since October 2005. Garcia is Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of the Erie Insurance Group located in Erie, Pennsylvania. Railpower has their US offices and engineering department in Erie.

Verne Gay of Newsweek reports that former WSEE weatherman Dave Price will become the next host of The Price is Right after Bob Barker retires in June. He’ll stay at the CBS Early Show and tape Price is Right on Fridays.
Vladimir Nikiforov’s goal 90 seconds into the third period stood as the game winner as the Barrie Colts slid past the Erie Otters 3-2 in an Ontario Hockey League game played last night in front of 3,502 at the Tullio Arena. Josh Vatri and Josh Kidd scored goals for the Otters. Erie dropped to 8-23-0-2. The Otters return to action tonight when they host the Saginaw Spirit in a 7:30 pm start at the Tullio Arena.
The “Victorian Holidays: A Holiday Heritage Festival” exhibit at the Erie County Historical Society Watson-Curtze Mansion, 356 W 6 St, runs through December 31.

The Lake Erie Ballet presents the Christmas-time classic “The Nutcracker” at the Warner Theatre Saturday, Dec 16 at 7 pm and Sunday, Dec 17 at 2:30 pm.
Natalie will give a Christmas piano recital at Luther Memorial Church on December 18 at 7 pm. Welcome the talented young lady back to Erie. The Presque Isle Chorus, a member of Sweet Adelines International, will be holding their Christmas Concert on December 18 at 7:30 pm at the Trinity Luthern Church, 14 East 38 St. Admission is free and everyone is welcome.
The Polish Christmas Celebration “Wiligia” will be celebrated on December 21 at the East Erie Turners, 820 Parade St. For reservations, call Sabella’s Catering at (814) 868-3463. Tickets are $15. This will be a traditional meatless dinner complete with Oplatek, religious music, artifacts, and rare museum quality exhibits directly from Poland. Profits go to the European Cultural and Polish Museum.
