Erie PA News and Events for Saturday December 30, 2006

Posted by Dennis on December 30, 2006

County Executive Mark DiVecchio is scarring me. Maybe he isn’t the bumbling goof he was thought to be. He again sounded reasonable and wants to save the taxpayers of Erie County a possible lawsuit by delaying the smoking ban until May 1 saying the delay would give the state legislature time to fix the law. This was the same reason an Allegheny County judge gave in granting a temporary injunction till May 1. County Councilman King Kyle Foust, who must walk with a waddle because he has a stick and/or his head up his ass, is opposed to a delay and seems to want a court fight. His major re-election campaign contributors must be attorneys.

Today is the birthday of the late Paul Allman Siple of Erie, PA. Siple was the youngest member of the Byrd Antarctic Expedition having been invited because he was a Boy Scouts of America Eagle Scout and also a Sea Scout. He ended up taking part in six Antarctic expeditions. Later in life, Siple along with Charles F Passel developed the wind-chill factor.

Former WICU Meteorologist Dylan Dreyer has left WJAR in Providence, RI and has joined WHDH in Boston as the weekend weather chick. She starts her new job in January. Her looks make it impossible to concentrate on her weather reports.

The Fullington Trailways route from DuBois to Erie will be discontinued February 1. The route made stops in Clarion, Oil City, Franklin and Titusville and is the only bus service to Erie from those communities.

The Gannon men’s basketball team broke open a close game with a 13-4 run to open the second half and rolled to an 84-65 victory over Roberts Wesleyan Friday evening in the 33rd annual Porreco Cup semifinals at the Hammermill Center. In the opener, Bellarmine hit 15 three-pointers as they beat California University of Pennsylvania 82-75. Saturday’s action begins with California and Roberts Wesleyan battling in the consolation game at 6 pm. Gannon takes on Bellarmine in the championship game at 8 pm.

Justin Hodgman scored twice and added an assist to lead the Erie Otters to a 5-3 win over the Ottawa 67’s in an Ontario Hockey League game played tonight in front of 7,822 at the Ottawa Civic Centre. Ronny Rogers, Josh Kidd and Luke Gazdic also scored for the Otters, who ended a three-game losing streak with the win to improve to 9-25-0-2 on the season. Zack Torquato collected two assists. The Otters return to action today when they travel to Belleville to face the Bulls.

Erie Cathedral Prep advanced to the consolation final of the Gulfshore Shootout and will take on Lemon Bay Saturday at 1:45 pm. Mark Blazek scored 17 points to lead the way for the Ramblers.

The Lebanon Valley College men’s basketball team beat Penn State Behrend 56-48 at the Land of Magic Classic in Daytona Beach, Fla.

Former Mercyhurst defenseman Jamie Hunt made history last night by playing in his first National Hockey League game as a member of the Washington Capitals. Hunt totaled ten shifts and six minutes of ice time as the Caps bowed on the road 4-3 to the New Jersey Devils. Hunt became the first Laker and first Atlantic Hockey alum to play in the NHL.

Tennessee plays Penn State on Monday in the Outback Bowl. Erie Cathedral Prep grad Andre Mathis is the only player from Pennsylvania on the Volunteers’ roster so every reporter is interviewing him. The red shirt freshman Mathis has appeared in 7 games for Tennessee. He’s making the move to defensive end next season.

The 24th edition of the McDonald’s High School Basketball Classic will be held in Erie on Friday, January 12 and Saturday, January 13, 2007 at Gannon University’s Hammermill Center. This year’s event features nationally renowned programs from California and Ohio, featuring rosters replete with top-ranked players.
The field is highlighted by the appearance of two of the most renowned players in Classic history. Delvon Roe, a 6’7” wing player for St. Edward of Lakewood, Ohio, is currently ranked as the Number 2 player in the junior class by PrepStars Recruiter’s Handbook, and is regarded as one of the best players in the nation regardless of class. Dallas Lauderdale of nearby Solon, Ohio, also is slated to perform, and the 6’10” explosive athlete is on everyone’s list of top centers in the nation.
Also entering the field for Classic 2007 is vaunted Westchester High of Los Angeles, California. The Comets, competing in their third McDonald’s Classic, are annually one of the nation’s top interscholastic programs.
The Classic will tip-off on Friday, January 12, with a first round, 7:00 PM match-up between Westchester and St. Edward. The 8:30 PM nightcap will feature Solon High and the host team Cathedral Prep.
St Edward is making their second appearance in the Classic, having won the title back in 1997. Head Coach Eric Flannery has been guiding the Eagles for eleven seasons and boasts of a 177-60 record including seven District titles, four regional crowns, and one state championship. His top players include current professionals Sam Clancy (USC), Jawad Williams (North Carolina), Steve Logan (Cincinnati), and Steve LePore (Wake Forest).
Also coming from neighboring Ohio is Solon High, featuring 6’10” All-American Dallas Lauderdale, who will play next season for Ohio State. The Comets are coached by highly-successful mentor Todd VanReeth, who in an 18-year career has compiled a 302-120 record, including a 92-29 record with Solon. His squads at Solon have won four league titles in the last six seasons, and have twice been a regional finalist.
The other visiting squad always brings impressive credentials and high aspirations for national championship recognition. Westchester High was California’s AAAA State Champions in 2005 and will feature 6’7 Dane Suttle, the reigning Los Angeles player of the year and junior Oscar Bellfield, who has been offered a scholarship by USC. The Comets are hoping their third trip to Erie ends with their second Classic crown.
Making a return to the Classic for the 24th consecutive year will be the Cathedral Prep Ramblers who are under the direction of head coach Brian Flanagan, who has gone 48-11 in his two seasons on the bench.
In his first season in 2004-‘05, he led the Ramblers to the Final Four in Pennsylvania with a banner record of 26-5, the fourth highest win total in school history. The Ramblers return just one starter from a year ago in junior Mark Blazek, but also have three seniors who saw regular minutes in guards Josh Licata and Ryan Heidt, along with center Jeff Wisinski.

My old blog gets an obscene # of hits for Dylan Dreyer. Hopefully this post will take some of that away. Apparently they want photos of her wearing a smile and a pair of rain boots.

DiVecchio seemed to have been thinking a little but why did he sign the ban oridinance? He could have showed that it needs real debate. Faust is a joke. They also passed as part of the smoking ban to allow municipal and state police to enforce the smoking ban. Like they do not have real law enforcement to deal with. The actions of county council have been disappointing. Not letting all citizens to speak at the one meeting and not being transparent on the open council seat. This is one where thy could have taken a lesson from the Erie City Council on the process used.
