Things you can always depend on in Erie
There are a few things I’ve noticed in Erie that you can always depend on. Of course, one of them is taxes, but we wont’ get into THAT today! I’m talking about the things you see every day that always seem to happen, no matter what. Here’s a few that I’ve noticed, feel free to share yours as well!
1. 5th and State McDonalds is where da party’s at.
For some odd reason, the 5th and State McDonalds has a crowd outside or near it at most all times. Hell, even today in the snow and wind I saw 4 guys standing outside just BSing, who didn’t move for half an hour. In the summer there’s about 10-15 kids at once just standing there, always. It could be 4 in the morning and there’d still the same people out there. The one guy I always see is this old scraggly dude who asks for money and says he needs food. He stopped me once outside the 5th and State McD’s and told me he was really hungry, and asked if I could spare a few bucks for food. I told him I’d take him in with me and grab him a burger, and he looked at me like I just offered him an old shoe to eat. “No way man, I won’t eat that s**t”. I guess even guys down on their luck know the evils of a $1 double cheeseburger.
2. This is the puddle that never ends, it goes on and on my friend….
Ok, yes, horrible kid’s song and you probably felt the rage rising when you read that. When my wife and I started dating, I’d drive to her house by going along Buffalo Road. Near the old BK near Nagle road, there’s a small plaza on that side. For the life of me I can’t remember any of the shops, because I never look at them; All I ever notice is the GINOURMOUS puddle in the parking lot. This thing is HUGE! It must be at least 4-6 inches deep and like 6-8 feet across. Every time I go by, the puddle is still there. Granted, in the summer it’s pretty low, but I’ve never seen it dry, EVER. One time, I swear I saw a camel drinking from it (might have been the Quizno’s cup guy too though). If Buffalo Road was empty one day, I’d drive through that puddle at 40mph just to see if it filled back up again once I splashed the water everywhere.
3. It’s cool to wear a winter jacket in the summer
Some days in June you’d think you’d need one, but every summer I always see at least one kid who decides it’s way cool to wear a huge puffy winter jacket in 70-80 degree weather. What the hell is up with that? Are you trying out for Richard Simmons’ new Sweatin’ To The Oldies 9 - Big Coats Lose Big Pounds? The only person that could pull this off without sweating to death would be my wife, who yells at me for turning on the AC when the indoor thermometer reads ERR because it melted.
4. Canadian Buses
This one is for Rachel, who is probably having a blast working at the mall. We get a TON of buses in Erie that come from Canada, because of the tax-free clothes and the free pen (hey, this bus stinks and we’ve been in traffic for hours, but hey FREE PEN!). Unfortunately, not all of the people who arrive on those buses seem to care much about the stores.
010 “Oh hey, this shirt looks nice. Hmm, wrong color though, doesn’t match my moose earmuffs.”
020 *Throws shirt on floor*
GOTO 010
5. IDEMS 4 SALE
On Cascade St. (somewhere above 12th) I’ve always seen this sign outside this guy’s house that says “IDEMS 4 SALE”. It’s usually there in the summer. What are these ‘IDEMS’ you speak of, and what do they do? Google says that I’m probably thinking of Ideas For Sale, so this might be some big thinktank incognito. Or it’s just some guy trying to sell tires, rusty bikes and scary dolls who can’t spell.
So, what do YOU see all the time in Erie? Post a comment!

Scary dolls who can't spell? :-)

Heh, well, I should have phrased that a bit different I guess. The guy can't spell obviously, but the dolls probably can't either. If they can, I assume they've already taken control of the house.
As far as technology, we're behind the times a bit, I have to admit. We always seem to be stuck decades behind other cities.
