Erie PA News and Events Saturday January 6, 2007

Posted by Dennis on January 6, 2007

On Friday I spoke with Mike Foreman of the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development Center for Local Government Services in Pittsburgh about starting a citizen based petition drive to have a public hearing to see if the City of Erie should be declared a Distressed City under Act 47. I’ll have to gather signatures from 10 percent of the people which voted in the last election. And I’ll need some help.
Erie could use some adult supervision from the state to help with the budget. There has been a lack of effort to cut costs. Much of that is due till waiting until the last moment to work on the budget. It should be on their minds 24/7/365 not waiting until December rolls around.

The Brian Wells Collar Bomber/ Pizza Bomber case will be featured on “America’s Most Wanted” again tonight. The show airs at 9 pm on Fox. This will be the 5th time AMW has covered to case. Wells, a pizza delivery man in Erie, died on Aug 28, 2003 when a collar bomb exploded. Police had stopped him after he robbed the PNC Bank on upper Peach St. Wellls said he was forced to rob the bank. And no, I don’t know where you can find a copy of the Brian Wells video of his death other than a vault at WJET-TV.

I had someone who bought a Photo-theremin from Professor Television want me go over to the residence of Martin Wolper (814-871-4287), 2413 Chestnut St, Apt 2, in Erie and have a little “talk” with him and get his money back. Thanks, but I’d rather not get arrested for kicking a guys rear, unless he ripped me off. This photo-theremin appears to be a scam, judging by the number of complaints. Here’s one forum thread I found on him and his so called “product.”

Pennsylvania Trooper Blake Myers of Erie was charged with trying to intimidate people into pleading guilty to tickets he issued and with false testimony.

Stephen M Barry-Gibbons of Erie was charged with the murder of Arthur Cheeks of New Castle PA. Barry-Gibbons shot Cheeks execution syle in the back of the head over drugs and money.

Erie Beer Company bought out Stubler Beverages in Franklin. Stubler was the beer distributer for all or parts of Crawford, Clarion, Forest and Venango counties.

The Erie Otters (9-28-0-2) suck. They lost last night to Mississauga 9-2. The Otters return to action tonight when the Sarnia Sting visit the Tullio Arena in a 7:30 pm.

Erie Strong Vincent’s star running back Donte Harden gave Ohio a verbal commitment.

Senior Lesley McArthur broke a scoreless tie with a goal midway through the second period, sophomore Natalie Payne scored the eventual game-winner with under 13 minutes to play, and the No. 1 Mercyhurst women’s hockey team defeated Cornell 2-1 Friday at the Ice Center. Although without the services of five key players who were playing in a tournament in Europe, the Lakers improved to 17-1-1.

The Canadian Women’s Under 22 Team skated to a 5-0 victory over host Germany. Valerie Chouinard and Meghan Agosta of Mercyhurst scored goals. Stephanie Jones of Merchurst had an assist.

Air Force scored three goals in the third period for a 5-3 win over the Mercyhurst College mens’ hockey team in an Atlantic Hockey Association game.

Dave Wedzick of Erie had tickets to the Philadelphia Eagles and New York Giants playoff game. He put them up for bid on eBay and specified that he would consider bids only from Eagles fans.

Gem City Concert Band of Erie, PA, is seeking new members for the Spring 2007 season. Now for the first time since Biloxi Blues the actor returns to a play by the greatest comic writer of the American Stage. The show is being directed by his wife Kim McClelland who acted in this same play on the stage at 1505 State Street several years before the McClelland’s met.

The 24th edition of the McDonald’s High School Basketball Classic will be held in Erie on Friday, January 12 and Saturday, January 13, 2007 at Gannon University’s Hammermill Center. This year’s event features nationally renowned programs from California and Ohio, featuring rosters replete with top-ranked players.
The field is highlighted by the appearance of two of the most renowned players in Classic history. Delvon Roe, a 6’7” wing player for St. Edward of Lakewood, Ohio, is currently ranked as the Number 2 player in the junior class by PrepStars Recruiter’s Handbook, and is regarded as one of the best players in the nation regardless of class. Dallas Lauderdale of nearby Solon, Ohio, also is slated to perform, and the 6’10” explosive athlete is on everyone’s list of top centers in the nation.
Also entering the field for Classic 2007 is vaunted Westchester High of Los Angeles, California. The Comets, competing in their third McDonald’s Classic, are annually one of the nation’s top interscholastic programs.
The Classic will tip-off on Friday, January 12, with a first round, 7:00 PM match-up between Westchester and St. Edward. The 8:30 PM nightcap will feature Solon High and the host team Cathedral Prep.
St Edward is making their second appearance in the Classic, having won the title back in 1997. Head Coach Eric Flannery has been guiding the Eagles for eleven seasons and boasts of a 177-60 record including seven District titles, four regional crowns, and one state championship. His top players include current professionals Sam Clancy (USC), Jawad Williams (North Carolina), Steve Logan (Cincinnati), and Steve LePore (Wake Forest).
Also coming from neighboring Ohio is Solon High, featuring 6’10” All-American Dallas Lauderdale, who will play next season for Ohio State. The Comets are coached by highly-successful mentor Todd VanReeth, who in an 18-year career has compiled a 302-120 record, including a 92-29 record with Solon. His squads at Solon have won four league titles in the last six seasons, and have twice been a regional finalist.
The other visiting squad always brings impressive credentials and high aspirations for national championship recognition. Westchester High was California’s AAAA State Champions in 2005 and will feature 6’7 Dane Suttle, the reigning Los Angeles player of the year and junior Oscar Bellfield, who has been offered a scholarship by USC. The Comets are hoping their third trip to Erie ends with their second Classic crown.
Making a return to the Classic for the 24th consecutive year will be the Cathedral Prep Ramblers who are under the direction of head coach Brian Flanagan, who has gone 48-11 in his two seasons on the bench.
In his first season in 2004-‘05, he led the Ramblers to the Final Four in Pennsylvania with a banner record of 26-5, the fourth highest win total in school history. The Ramblers return just one starter from a year ago in junior Mark Blazek, but also have three seniors who saw regular minutes in guards Josh Licata and Ryan Heidt, along with center Jeff Wisinski.
General admission tickets cost $7 per night in advance for adults and $5 in advance for students, and went on sale to the general public on November 29th, 2006. Any remaining reserved tickets will also be on sale beginning on Wednesday, November 29th at the Cathedral Prep athletic office. General Admission tickets will be available on the same date at the Erie Sport Store, the Avalon Hotel, Dee’s News, and select McDonald’s Restaurants while they last. No phone orders will be accepted, and no tickets can be held. Another sell-out crowd is expected, so fans are encouraged to buy their tickets early.

I love the new comment in that theremin thread from someone who obviously heard about it here.

"So please... if you have the wherewithall to journey to Erie PA (and if you know where he lives), feel free to knock on the door, politely ask his mother to go to the basement and wake his ass up, and proceed to demand your money back. If he doesn't give it to you RIGHT THEN, well, I can only encourage you to act according to your [conscience]. I suggest filing charges of fraud."

Classic! And now we all know where he lives. Wake his mother and ring the bell!

If you ordered a Photo-theremin from me in the past and you still have not received the unit or a refund, rest assured that I am busy trying to get either one to you as soon as I can. I will be contacting everyone who still has an outstanding order within the next week to let them know that I have not forgotten about them and to give a realistic estimate of when their order will be filled. If you would rather contact me first I have set up an email address specifically for outstanding order inquiries. The address is phototheremin@mail.com . I am deeply sorry for the great inconvenience I have caused anyone with an outstanding order and I am doing everything I can to rectify the situation as soon as possible.
