New GoErie: Wow, and not in a good way. First, the new front page offers very little in terms of news. I liked their old page (now the Erie Times News tab) because you can see everything at a glance. They've added a needless click to the process. Second, just their front page alone (the one with just 5 news stories) has over 340 validation errors (here's a link to the validator: http://tinyurl.com/y36jym) Third, formatting of article pages is broken in Safari and Firefox. Fourth, they've redesigned their site with tables. While that's easier then doing it right with CSS, it handcuffs them when they want to make future updates or present their content across multiple platforms (browsers, mobile devices, etc.) What a mess.

New GoErie: I agree with Mike although I really, really, really wanted to like it. I can hear the staff at CyberInk now: "no matter what we would have done, those assholes at ErieBlogs.com wouldn't like it." And to that I would respond they are both right and wrong: yes we are a bunch of assholes but no, we would have given kudos to a successful redesign.

Ignoring the "geeky" stuff like problems in Firefox/Safari browsers, poor coding/validation, and a conspicuously absent RSS feed link, this is my primary contention; it was a redesign for a redesign's sake. Although aesthetically pleasing and more contemporary looking (circa 2004-05) it simply misses the boat on user friendliness and ease of navigation. For example, what the hell is a "Erie Times News" tab? And why does the "Sports" tab (among others) exist if there is a sub-link under the Erie Times News tab (the hierarchy in which doesn't make sense)? Kill the 'Erie Times News tab of obfuscation' and give readers the short cut to the info they want.

However, I have a strong feeling the Times/CyberInk is tied to that Publicas software that they are using in the back end, and hence, are limited in what they can do (for whatever the reason). Apparently the Times are not the only ones with this hangup (see Detroit Free Press site at http://www.freep.com ).

Really, all users want is a simple and clean interface without a brazillion distractions and hoops to jump through. Although my mom always used to say that it is the thought that counts, here I don't think that will be enough.

Maybe I'm missing something here and would like to hear a contrary position or argument.

New GoErie.com: They should have focused more on usability rather than just a facelift. What good is a clean design if it just doesn't work for you?

I understand if there is already a heavy investment in a particular backend software, etc....but if you so many people complaining about your site it would seem common sense to look into something else.I don;t know one person that ever liked using the site.

GoErie.com....at the very least, fix your tabs so that the section you are in is highlighted....and listen to your users...please...I'm asking nicely.

"No, you aren't still drunk[.] GoErie.com has redesigned their site. It looks better but the navigation and search function could still be improved."

And they still require registration to view anything. What is this: 2002? Wise up, Go Erie. In the meantime, we're all going to get username/pw combos at bugmenot.com if we feel the burning need to read anything there.

BTW: Just b/c they did a redesign doesn't mean I'm not drunk. ;)
