Erie PA News and Events for Tuesday January 23, 2007
This area seems to have more than it’s fair share of teachers fooling around with kids. Yesterday, one teacher was sentenced to jail while another was arrested. Matthew Weaver, now a former French teacher at Seneca High School, was sentenced to 3-12 months, fined $1000 and must perform 100 hours of community service for soliciting sex from a 14 year old boy when the two of them were doing a play at the Erie Playhouse. Mrs Robin Lee Hecker, a 10th grade English teacher at Northwestern High School, was arrested for having sex with a 16 year old student in her home over a 3 month period in 2005. She was suspended with pay.
Mercyhurst College announced a $10,000 grant from Verizon Foundation for the Mercyhurst Learning Differences Program. The Learning Differences Program offers students with learning disabilities access to technology such as Kurzweil Personal Readers, which convert text to audio, and textbooks on tape. This funding will provide additional technological equipment for the program including speech recognition tools, text to speech readers and visual mapping products. The original equipment, purchased in March 2004, was the turning point for the program, allowing students to interact with PC-based reading systems. As the first learning difference program in the region, the Mercyhurst Learning Differences Program has helped more than 250 students graduate and currently provides support to 155 students on Mercyhurst’s Erie and North East campuses.

Mercyhurst College, Channel 19, will be one of four area television channels to air “Arts Unwrapped,” a half-hour program produced by Community Access Television, on Saturday, Jan 27, at 7:30 pm, announced Brian Sheridan, HURST TV adviser and a trustee on the board of CAT. The program, funded in part by the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, the Arts Council of Erie, The Erie Community Foundation, and Time Warner Cable, highlights the availability and approachability of the arts in the Erie area. Besides Mercyhurst’s student-run channel, which is available in the City of Erie and in Corry, the program can be viewed on CATV, Channel 2, Time Warner Cable, City of Erie; WJET-TV 24; and Channel 19, Time Warner Cable, Erie County. Produced and directed by Shawn Phelps, production coordinator at Community Access Television, the program brings together several self-identified “arts amateurs” and exposes them to the wide variety of arts offerings in Erie. Written by local writer Monica Lewis and narrated by Scott McClelland of the Roadhouse Theater, the program is a refreshingly local examination of the arts and illustrates their accessibility, in some cases going behind the scenes.

..."Mrs Robin Lee Hecker, a 10th grade English teacher at Northwestern High School, was arrested for having sex with a 16 year old student in her home over a 3 month period in 2005. She was suspended with pay."
Nice to see the school district of Northwestern is pimping the teachers for something other than teaching!

Couple journalistic nitpicks:
"Mrs" on the woman's name but no "Mr" on the man's? Even in the tags? Either make the titles consistent or omit them. It's like saying "and she's MARRIED too" -- as if it make any difference. Can't say it's for sex clarification; "she" is used in reference.
That apostrophe in "it's" needs to go as well.
;)
