This Is Erie 6 - Downtown/Perry Square
No snow in January, isn’t too unusual in Erie. This photo was taken January 8, 2006.
Perry Square is made up of two blocks, one each east and west of State Street, and was part of the orginal layout of the city. Andrew Ellicott completed the park in 1795, originally calling it "The Diamond" because it was divided diagonally by a ravine that ran to the foot French Street. It was renamed Perry Square on June 2, 1846.
The fountain in the park is an Edison Electric Fountain, with colored lights lighting the water at night. There are statues of Ebon Brewer and Oliver Hazard Perry, 2 cannons in memory of General Anthony Wayne, and memorials for veterans of the Civil War, World War I, World War II, Korean War, and Viet Nam War, as well as memorials for Firefighters and Police, killed in the line of duty.
