There is an article in todays USA Today which quotes US Attorney Mary Beth Buchanan saying “The investigation is in its final stages” concerning the Brian Wells Pizza Bomber case. There is a meeting today in Pittsburgh to help determine whether to file charges in the case.
On August 28 2003, pizza delivery man Brian Douglas Wells was allegedly locked into a bombing device by a stranger and ordered to rob a PNC bank branch on Peach St in Erie, Pennsylvania. When he was detained by state police following the robbery, the bomb exploded, killing him instantly. The FBI is still offering a reward of up to $100,000 for information leading directly to the identification of the individual or individuals responsible for the bank robbery and death of Brian Wells. Mark Aleksandrowicz announced he is running fro Erie City Council. He’s part owner of Alek’s Powersports. He made the announcement at the PNA Club. One minute after he left someone took his yard signs from the snow banks around the club.
There was a story on the news yesterday about how the organizers of the 35th annual St. Patrick`s Day Parade are short of money to put on the parade. They are looking for sponsors. Saint Patrick Parish does have a website. Great, but there is no mention of the parade.

Dan Chivari of Erie was promoted to Chief Mechanic on Reed Sorenson’s No 41 Wrigley’s Juicy Fruit Crew Team. Sorenson will compete in both NASCAR races at Daytona this upcoming weekend. First, he will make his 2007 NASCAR Busch Series debut in the No 41 Wrigley’s Juicy Fruit Dodge on Saturday in the Orbitz 300. He will then make his second career run in the historic Daytona 500 on Sunday in the No 41 Target Dodge.
The West Virginia University wrestling fell just short of its upset bid against 6th ranked Edinboro, 21-15 last evening at the WVU Coliseum.
Tyler Stoczynski (Erie McDowell) and Marcus Lemon combined for 48 points and nine three-pointers as the Gannon men’s basketball team snapped a 14-game road losing streak with an 86-83 victory at Ashland Thursday night.
Christina Jackson recorded her fourth consecutive double-double to lead the Gannon women’s basketball team to its first GLIAC South Division title since 2001-02 via a 79-76 victory Thursday night at Ashland.
Shelby Chaney and Avi Fogel combined for 36 points, but 3rd ranked Findlay showed why it has the longest winning streak in the nation, taking an 86-60 from Mercyhurst in a GLIAC contest.
A Brittany Wells jumper in the lane as time expired broke a 58-58 tie as Mercyhurst fell in a GLIAC contest on the road as Findlay won 60-58.
Encore performances Friday and Saturday February 16 and 17 at 8 pm have been added to the run of the Roadhouse Theatre's smash hit production of Neil Simon's Last of the Red Hot Lovers.
Musicians from Mercyhurst College and Clarion University will combine forces on Sunday, Feb 18, to perform Antonin Dvorak's "Stabat Mater," a huge work for choir, soloists and orchestra that celebrates the triumph of faith and belief over despair. The "Stabat Mater" is based on a Roman Catholic hymn which dates to the 13th century and meditates on the suffering of Mary during the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Its title is from the poem's first line, "Stabat mater dolorosa" - "The sorrowful mother was standing." The concert begins at 2 pm in the Mary D'Angelo Performing Arts Center on the Mercyhurst campus. The same musicians will repeat the "Stabat Mater" performance in Clarion on Sunday, Mar 4, at 3 pm in the Marwick-Boyd Auditorium. Admission to both performances is free and the public is cordially invited.

Zanny Minton Beddoes, The Economist's Washington-based economics editor, will speak at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, on Thursday, February 22. Minton Beddoes' address, "Fragile Prosperity: The Outlook for the US and World Economy," is part of the college's annual Speaker Series. It will be held at 7:30 pm in the Reed Union Building's McGarvey Commons and is free and open to the public.
Roger Knacke, professor of physics and astronomy and director of the School of Science at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, will discuss "Astronomy of the Maya" at the college's next Open House Night in Astronomy. Knacke will speak at 7:30 pm on Thursday, February 22, in 101 Otto Behrend Science Building. Admission to the open house is free and his non-technical lecture is suitable for ages 8 and older.
On February 24-25, the Tom Ridge Environmental Center will be the location of the 2007 Erie Winter Carnival, a fun-filled event weekend for all ages. Highlights include professional ice carvings, carved by some of the greatest ice carvers in the world! Watch the Speed Carving Competitions or check out delicate ice-art carvings created with chain saws and fine carving tools. Amazing pieces of art right created before your eyes! Take in one of the great featured films that weekend including Everest, Lewis and Clark, or the special weekend featured film, March of the Penguins. All on the BIG Green Screen. Children can also enjoy special activities including face painting, winter craft, storytelling and a magic show. On Feb 25, the Brewerie at Union Station in Erie hosts the Erie Illusion women's football team Beer Fest.
The 25th annual Erie Sport and Travel Expo will be held at Family First Sports Park in Erie, Pa March 2-4. The show features fishing and hunting lodges, guides, outfitters, fishing charters and sporting goods vendors and boat and recreational vehicle dealers. General Admission $6 with children under 10 free.
Music lovers are invited to follow Road to the Isles, and take in the sights and sounds of traditional Celtic folk music and dance along the way. Road to the Isles is a Pittsburgh-based quintet of pipe, guitar, fiddle, and two dancers that will perform at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, on Wednesday, March 7 at 12 pm. Their presentation of Scottish and Irish music and dance is part of college's Rhythms of Life cultural series and begins at noon in the Reed Union Building's Bruno's Cafe. It is free and open to the public.
The concert band and jazz ensemble at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, will play favorites "From Stage and Screen" at their annual joint spring concert. The performance will be held at 8 pm on Thursday, March 8, in the McGarvey Commons of the Reed Union Building. Admission is free and open to the public.
The Erie Micro Brew Festival presented by WQLN will be held April 21 at Union Station at 14th and French Streets. There will be 2 sampling sessions 1-4 pm and 5-8 pm. All proceeds support public broadcasting and all PLCB laws apply. Attendees must be 21. Tickets will be available soon at many Erie area locations.
