Saint Vincent’s finally released a press release, 4 days after their announced “affiliation” - Saint Vincent Health System announced plans to affiliate with Catholic Healthcare Partners (CHP), a national health system based in Cincinnati, Ohio. Saint Vincent Health System President and CEO Angela Bontempo made this historic announcement for Saint Vincent, the Erie community and the region at large on Thursday, February 22, 2007.”Our affiliation with CHP creates a more powerful Saint Vincent to benefit the entire region,” said Bontempo. The affiliation ensures that Saint Vincent governance, management and operations stay local and offers significant advantages to Saint Vincent and its patients: Low-cost purchasing through one of the largest purchasing organizations in the nation Better access to capital to make improvements to existing facilities and introduce new services and technology Benefits for physicians such as better medical malpractice rates and national/intra-system recruiting Enhanced ability to address community needs and the needs of the poor, underserved and marginalized The sponsors of Saint Vincent Health System, the Sisters of Saint Joseph of Northwest Pennsylvania, expand their role by becoming one of six sponsors of the entire CHP system. The Sisters will maintain a seat on the CHP Board of Trustees and also continue in their active ministry at Saint Vincent. The Saint Vincent Board of Trustees approved the affiliation and recommended it to the Sisters of Saint Joseph, who then reviewed, endorsed and approved the plan. Bishop Donald Trautman, Erie Catholic Diocese, concurred with the proposal. The CHP Board of Trustees is expected to approve the affiliation in April. CHP is a multi-billion dollar health system with approximately 100 hospitals, long-term care facilities, housing facilities and other health care organizations in Indiana, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Tennessee and nearby states. Affiliates like Saint Vincent benefit from this resource-rich health system and, in keeping with their faith-based missions, pass these benefits in the form of improved services and technology along to patients throughout the region’s they serve.
