Radnor Property Group and Fourth River Development were picked as the development team for the first phase of the downtown Erie redevelopment plan. The area is between Holland and Sassafras Streets, 12th to 14th Streets. Radnor and Fourth River announced (press release) they were looking for a project to do together back in December after they received a $6 state grant that could be used anywhere in Pennsylvania except Philadelphia or Pittsburgh. The companies will invest $10-15 million of their own money in Erie. The Erie Redevelopment Authority along with the Erie Downtown Improvement District and the city picked the developer.

According to estimates provided by First American LoanPerformance, a San Francisco-based data and analytics unit of First American, of all mortgages in the Erie, PA area,15.7 percent were subprime mortgages. A subprime borrower is one who cannot qualify for prime financing terms but can qualify for subprime financing terms. The failure to qualify for prime financing is due primarily to low credit scores.

Tom Ridge of Erie was the playing partner of Arnold Palmer on Wednesday for the pro-am round of the Arnold Palmer Invitational golf tournament in Orlando.

Luka Glinksy of Erie took second place in the Pennsylvania state finals of the 2007 “Poetry Out Loud: National Recitation Contest.”

Erie Plastics announced that it successfully earned ISO 9001:2000 certification, a quality management standard recognized worldwide and developed by the International Organization for Standardization. The company’s Corry, Pa, facility was awarded ISO 9001:2000 certification by NSF International Strategic Registrations. The company produces over 10 billion parts annually and has annual revenues of over $100 million.

Charles Elliott, owner of TaleWeavers in Erie, has also created a site for his business on mymave.com. TaleWeavers makes baskets, canes chairs and weaves seats. mymave.com is a free Web-based marketplace which provides web sites and domain names for businesses.

Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens announced the appointment of Michael Sexauer as Director of Marketing and Communications. A native of Erie, Pennsylvania, Sexauer earned his BS in Communications from Clarion University of Pennsylvania, and his MBA from the Babcock School of Graduate Management at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, NC. Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens is a Victorian glasshouse, gardens and tropical forest conservatory in the Schenley Park area of Pittsburgh.

The Gannon University women’s lacrosee team (6-0), ranked 7th in Division II, defeated Division I Canisius College 16-8.

The Erie Otters wrap up a horrible season this weekend with three games in three days beginning tonight in Sarnia against the Sting. The regular season comes to a close with a home-and-home set against the London Knights, Friday at the John Labatt Center in London followed by a St Patrick’s Day finale at the Tullio Arena on Saturday.

Tom Parry has resigned as assistant coach of the Erie Freeze to accept a position with the Kentucky Wesleyan College football program. Kentucky Wesleyan is coached by former Mercyhurst assistant Brent Holsclaw.

Works by seven graduating art students are featured in the 2007 Senior Art Thesis Exhibition that opens today, Thursday, March 15, at Mercyhurst College’s Cummings Gallery. The artists will be honored at a reception on Saturday, March 24, from 2 to 4 pm. The event is free and open to the public.

The annual St Patrick’s Day parade will be held Saturday March 17 at 2 pm. The parade route begins at 10th and State and goes north on Sate to 3rd Street and then east to St Patrick Church.

The Northwest PA Maple Association 2007 Northwest PA Maple Taste and Tour Weekend will be held March 17-18, 10 am to 4 pm daily. Ten sugar houses in Crawford, Erie, Mercer, Warren and Venango counties open their doors during the height of maple sugaring time.

Meadowmount Trio, a frequent contributor to National Public Radio hailed as "an ensemble of seamless rapport" by The Strad magazine, will perform at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, on Wednesday, March 21. Meadowmount Trio appears as part of Music at Noon: The Logan Series. Its performance, which is free and open to the public, will be held at noon in the Reed Union Building's McGarvey Commons.

The Classic Rock Dance, a fund raiser for the family of Erie soldier Katie Beckwith, with the Bryan Burton Band will be held on March 24 at the Millcreek American Legion, 4109 West 12th Street in Erie (next to the Airport) starting at 8 pm. Tickets can be purchased at the door for a donation of $5 per person. Katie was injured when a roadside bomb detonated beside her Humvee in Iraq. She is presently being hospitalized at Fort Knox. The benefit is to raise money for travel expenses for her family to visit her.

Think you have what it takes to sing the National Anthem at a Double-A baseball game? Well here is your chance. The Erie SeaWolves announced their National Anthem tryouts to be held Sunday, March 25 at the Millcreek Mall. Tryouts will be held on the main stage located at the center of the mall. Registration begins at 1:30 pm and tryouts begin at 2 pm. Those interested in auditioning will perform the National Anthem for a panel of judges. Auditions must be performed a capella. SeaWolves Opening Day for the 2007 season is April 5 against the Altoona Curve. First pitch is set for 6:35 pm.

The St Martins Center 9th annual Homeownership Expo will be held March 29 from 11:30 am - 6:30 pm at the Blasco Memorial Library. There will be information on homes, mortgage products, refinancing options, homes inspections, lead paint issues and more. Admission is free and open to everyone.

Mercyhurst College welcomes noted historian Dr. Ralph Ketcham, Emeritus Professor of History, Political Science and Public Affairs at Syracuse University, who will address “Lincoln’s Union: Where it came from, and what it Meant,” on Thursday, March 29, at 8 pm in Walker Recital Hall.

 

The Erie Micro Brew Festival presented by WQLN will be held April 21 at Union Station at 14th and French Streets. There will be 2 sampling sessions 1-4 pm and 5-8 pm. All proceeds support public broadcasting and all PLCB laws apply. Attendees must be 21. Tickets will be available soon at many Erie area locations. Scheduled to attend are: The BrewErie at Union Station, The Erie Brewing Company, Southern Tier Brewing, Pennsylvania Brewery, Voodoo Brewery, The Flying Bison, Ellicottville Brewing Company, North Country Brewing Company, Hereford and Hops, Sprague Farm and Brew Works, The Buffalo Brew Pub, Magic Hat Brewing and the East End Brewing Company.
