There was a murder last night at Lamas Tavern, 1102 East Avenue. A fight resulted in a man being stabbed to death.

Michael Murnock, the executive director of the International Institute of Erie, resigned effective today. That’s a huge loss for the agency. The number of refugees resettled is only about a third of what they did before 9/11. They are attempting to merge with the US Committee for Refugees and Immigrants.
An underground fire on February 20 knocked out internet access at the Erie Vets Center in the Renaissance Centre, 1001 State St. The Erie Vets Center provides counseling and referral services to veterans. It was restored on March 12. During the two weeks it was out employees couldn’t access email, web sites, process payroll or file electronic reports. They had to drive to the Erie VA Hospital, 135 E 38th St, two miles away for internet access. Dr David Adelman, the hospital’s director, didn’t know about the outage until the Meadville Tribune called asking questions Friday March 9. Major Christina Nagy, a mother of three from Erie PA, who is in civic affairs officer, is on her second tour of duty. She is stationed in Tikrit, Iraq.
On April 11, the three candidates for Edinboro’s president will meet with the university’s board. The decision for Edinboro’s next president is expected to be made that day. The three candidates are: Dr John William Folkins, Bowling Green State University Research Institute; Dr Sue Kiefer Hammersmith, Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, University of Wisconsin-Green Bay; and Dr Nabil A. Ibrahim, Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs and Chief Academic Officer, Purdue University, Calumet.
The pioneering archaeological endeavors of the Mercyhurst Archaeological Institute (MAI) comprise a vital and substantive part of “Prehistoric Americans,” an hourlong documentary slated to air Saturday, March 17, at 4 pm on The National Geographic Channel’s program, “Naked Science.” The documentary centers on the work of MAI founder and director Dr James Adovasio and includes substantial footage of Mercyhurst’s science laboratories and state-of-the-art technology. Also figuring prominently in the presentation is Mercyhurst’s partner in archaeological research, the Texas Archaeological Research Laboratory at the University of Texas. A film crew from the United Kingdom’s Granada TV was on the Mercyhurst campus in June to shoot scenes for the program. The crew also acquired footage of Adovasio at the Meadowcroft Rockshelter, 30 miles southwest of Pittsburgh. Adovasio achieved world acclaim in the 1970s with his excavation of Meadowcroft, which has been recognized as the earliest well-dated archaeological site in the Western Hemisphere, with evidence of human habitation dating to 16,000 years ago. His book, The First Americans, centers on his work in that particular arena. He is also the author of a just released book, The Invisible Sex: Uncovering the True Roles of Women in Prehistory.
Mercyhurst freshman defenseman Cullen Eddy was named to the Atlantic Hockey Association All-Rookie Team. He finished the year with 5 goals and 11 assists.
The Detroit Tigers announced Kody Kirkland was optioned to the Double-A Erie SeaWolves.
Dale Earnhardt Jr will be the headliner for the Race of Champions at Lake Erie Speedway on August 18.
Listen as soloist Anna Meyer on flute joins the Erie Chamber Orchestra in a concert this evening at 7:30 pm in the First United Methodist Church at 707 Sassafras Street in Erie. Bruce Morton Wright conducting. Admission is free.
The annual St Patrick’s Day parade will be held Saturday March 17 at 2 pm. The parade route begins at 10th and State and goes north on Sate to 3rd Street and then east to St Patrick Church.
The Northwest PA Maple Association 2007 Northwest PA Maple Taste and Tour Weekend will be held March 17-18, 10 am to 4 pm daily. Ten sugar houses in Crawford, Erie, Mercer, Warren and Venango counties open their doors during the height of maple sugaring time.
Meadowmount Trio, a frequent contributor to National Public Radio hailed as "an ensemble of seamless rapport" by The Strad magazine, will perform at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, on Wednesday, March 21. Meadowmount Trio appears as part of Music at Noon: The Logan Series. Its performance, which is free and open to the public, will be held at noon in the Reed Union Building's McGarvey Commons.
The Classic Rock Dance, a fund raiser for the family of Erie soldier Katie Beckwith, with the Bryan Burton Band will be held on March 24 at the Millcreek American Legion, 4109 West 12th Street in Erie (next to the Airport) starting at 8 pm. Tickets can be purchased at the door for a donation of $5 per person. Katie was injured when a roadside bomb detonated beside her Humvee in Iraq. She is presently being hospitalized at Fort Knox. The benefit is to raise money for travel expenses for her family to visit her.
Think you have what it takes to sing the National Anthem at a Double-A baseball game? Well here is your chance. The Erie SeaWolves announced their National Anthem tryouts to be held Sunday, March 25 at the Millcreek Mall. Tryouts will be held on the main stage located at the center of the mall. Registration begins at 1:30 pm and tryouts begin at 2 pm. Those interested in auditioning will perform the National Anthem for a panel of judges. Auditions must be performed a capella. SeaWolves Opening Day for the 2007 season is April 5 against the Altoona Curve. First pitch is set for 6:35 pm.
The St Martins Center 9th annual Homeownership Expo will be held March 29 from 11:30 am - 6:30 pm at the Blasco Memorial Library. There will be information on homes, mortgage products, refinancing options, homes inspections, lead paint issues and more. Admission is free and open to everyone.
Mercyhurst College welcomes noted historian Dr. Ralph Ketcham, Emeritus Professor of History, Political Science and Public Affairs at Syracuse University, who will address “Lincoln’s Union: Where it came from, and what it Meant,” on Thursday, March 29, at 8 pm in Walker Recital Hall.
