Three fires claimed three lives in less than 24 hours. Richard Hunt of Corry died in his East Main Street home in a fire that broke out around 1 pm. A fire at 457 West Front St broke out around 2:45 and claimed the life of a women. I’m selling the home next door at 455 West Front Street went to put a sign on the property. I arrived on the scene not long after the fire broke out. I’m still in a bit of shock. Then last evening a fire at 337 East Front Street took the life of a man. Check your smoke alarms and if you don’t have one, get one today.
WICU-TV has rumored to have been sold to New Vision Television pending FCC approval. A commenter posted word on Erie Media-Go-Round and Jack and the gang there will have the story if it’s true.
Dwayne T Jenkins of Erie hit a $145,000 jackpot at Presque Isle Downs and Casino. He didn’t get the money. He is 19. Jenkins was arrested for underage drinking and carrying false identification.
The Northern District of New York has tossed out a civil rights suit brought by Andrew Book of Erie PA. The court sanctioned Book for filing a frivolous action, ordering him to pay nearly $4000 in legal costs. Book accused the Tioga County sheriff and two sheriff’s deputies of racial profiling during a traffic stop in June 2005.
Mercyhurst College senior Tracy O’Connell will be awarded the Nick Cardello Youth of the Year Award at the 34th Art Rooney Award Dinner and Auction at the Pittsburgh Hilton on April 12. The annual fundraiser benefiting the Catholic Youth Association (CYA) each year honors a young person for his or her contributions to the wellness, recreational, cultural and educational programs CYA offers to Pittsburgh area youth. O’Connell was named for her service to CYA’s Camp R, where she serves as unit leader, supervising children between the ages of 7 and 14. During the past 10 summers, she has risen through the ranks, from camper to junior counselor to counselor and unit leader.
Tom Ridge of Erie will be honored with the Mister Rogers Award today in Harrisburg.
Peter Hohman, an eighth grader from Harbor Creek Junior High School, was runner-up in the Pennsylvania 2007 Word Power Challenge.
Works are currently being accepted for the Erie Art Museum’s 84th Annual Spring Show, a regional juried exhibit, running April 21 through June 24, 2007 in the Erie Art Museum’s Main Gallery. All artists residing within 250 miles of Erie are invited to enter works not previously exhibited in the Erie area. A total of $10,000 in awards is offered, including $2,000 in juror’s cash awards, the $500 Northwestern Pennsylvania Arts Association Award and at least $7,500 in guaranteed purchases. The cash awards will be divided among the juror’s selections of the best work in the show. Purchase selections will be made by the firms and individuals offering purchase awards. Each entrant may submit three works. The entry fee is $5 per entry for members of the Erie Art Museum and $10 for non-members. Work is currently being accepted at the Erie Art Museum Annex, 20 East 5th Street on: Saturday, March 24, Sunday, March 25, Saturday, March 31, and Sunday, April 1.
For a $15 donation, you will get a simple meal of soup, along with bread and beverage, and then have the pleasure of selecting a bowl from hundreds of one of a kind, hand crafted bowls donated by student artists from Mercyhurst College, Mercyhurst Prep, and Edinboro University. The second annual Empty Bowls Meal and Auction, organized by the Mercyhurst College Social Work and Art Education clubs, takes place Sunday, April 1, at the Masonic Temple, 32 W Eighth St, from 3 to 5:30 pm. Proceeds benefit the Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest Pennsylvania. Festivities will also include live entertainment and an auction. Tickets for the Empty Bowls Meal and Auction are $15 apiece. However, to keep the cost reasonable for families, meal-only tickets for children (no bowl) are available for $3. Tickets must be purchased in advance so that there will be enough bowls to go around. General McLane defeated Grove City 56-49 and will play for the state Class AAA Championship Friday at 8 pm. Many of the guys on the team were on the football team that won a state championship.
Villa Maria Academy beat Westmont Hilltop 35-25 and will play for the state Class AA Championship Friday at noon.
A Pennsylvania bred stakes day is set for September 29 at Presque Isle Downs and Casino. Six $90,000 events for 3-year-olds and 3-year-olds and up will be offered at the track.
Mike Machuga of Erie is in 56th place at the PBA World Championship.
The Mercyhurst College baseball team is ranked fifth in this week’s North Central Regional rankings by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.

Julie Zielinski of McDowell High School signed a letter of intent to continue her academic and soccer career at Wingate University.
The Erie SeaWolves announced they have agreed to terms with Connoisseur Media and WJET 1400 AM to broadcast all 142 SeaWolves games for the 2007 season. The 13th season of SeaWolves baseball begins Thursday, April 5 against the Altoona Curve. First pitch is set for 6:35 pm.
Meadowmount Trio, a frequent contributor to National Public Radio hailed as "an ensemble of seamless rapport" by The Strad magazine, will perform at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, today, Wednesday, March 21. Meadowmount Trio appears as part of Music at Noon: The Logan Series. Its performance, which is free and open to the public, will be held at noon in the Reed Union Building's McGarvey Commons.
The Northwest Pennsylvania Regional Planning and Development Commission has been awarded a planning grant from DCED to establish a regional Keystone Innovation Zone (KIZ), and has contracted GSP Consulting in Pittsburgh to proceed with engaging the interest of universities, industries and service providers in the seven county area of Clarion, Venango, Lawrence, Mercer, Crawford, Forest and Warren. KIZs provide grant funds to community/university partnerships to generate job growth through tech transfer and entrepreneurship. A kick-off meeting is scheduled for 9:30 am today, Wednesday, March 21 at Allegheny College’s Tippie Alumni Center in Meadville. Investors, industry service providers, educational institutes and industries involved in R and D are invited to attend.

The Classic Rock Dance, a fund raiser for the family of Erie soldier Katie Beckwith, with the Bryan Burton Band will be held on March 24 at the Millcreek American Legion, 4109 West 12th Street in Erie (next to the Airport) starting at 8 pm. Tickets can be purchased at the door for a donation of $5 per person. Katie was injured when a roadside bomb detonated beside her Humvee in Iraq. She is presently being hospitalized at Fort Knox. The benefit is to raise money for travel expenses for her family to visit her.
Think you have what it takes to sing the National Anthem at a Double-A baseball game? Well here is your chance. The Erie SeaWolves announced their National Anthem tryouts to be held Sunday, March 25 at the Millcreek Mall. Tryouts will be held on the main stage located at the center of the mall. Registration begins at 1:30 pm and tryouts begin at 2 pm. Those interested in auditioning will perform the National Anthem for a panel of judges. Auditions must be performed a capella. The St Martins Center 9th annual Homeownership Expo will be held March 29 from 11:30 am - 6:30 pm at the Blasco Memorial Library. There will be information on homes, mortgage products, refinancing options, homes inspections, lead paint issues and more. Admission is free and open to everyone.
Mercyhurst College welcomes noted historian Dr Ralph Ketcham, Emeritus Professor of History, Political Science and Public Affairs at Syracuse University, who will address “Lincoln’s Union: Where it came from, and what it Meant,” on Thursday, March 29, at 8 pm in Walker Recital Hall.

Bravo for Galena. It's about time somebody stands up for the people of Erie county. These politicians forget that they are here to serve the people, and to be watch dogs of our money. They are not a special class of people over and above us to rule us. They are bound by rules and order. They are not Gods of the white temples do do their wills as they see fit. I think if Galena is running for political office, and has the tenacity to sit through the BS that dribbles out at these meeting, we should all support him. Go Galena
