Erie PA News and Events for Thursday March 22, 2007
On Tuesday, County Council Chairman Fiore Leone had a sheriff’s deputy remove Dan Galena from Erie County Council Chambers. Galena is a Republican who is running for the District 7 seat on council. Galena accused council of violating county rules and the Pennsylvania Sunshine Act. Here is the email I received from Mr Galena with his side of the story:
Yesterday, at the county council meeting I was escorted from the meeting by a deputy sheriff. The Deputy was ordered by Council Chairman Leone to remove me because I had “disrupted” the council meeting.
TV 24 and Fox News 66 has shown video of me leaving. And Trina Orlando did a small piece that was also about my being escorted from the council meeting. What these stations did not tell anyone was MY side of the story.
Simply put….county council violated the law AGAIN last night when they moved 1st Reading Ordinances (introductory) by motion to 2nd Readings and voted anonymously to pass these tax spending ordinances. To vote on passage in the same night as introduction is not only a violation of the County Administrative Code but it is a violation of the Pennsylvania Sunshine Act.
The action that got me tossed out of the county council meeting by Leone was simply that I had verbally objected by council’s breaking the law ! No more. No less. Under the Pennsylvania Sunshine Act it very specifically states that ANY citizen in attendance at a public meeting can object to any PERCEIVED violation of the law. What Leone did was not like the fact that I was challenging his violation of the Admin Code and the Sunshine act. He thus abused his authority and refused to answer my objection; he further abused his authority by violating my Constitutional Freedom of Speech rights.
