US Representative Phil English (R-PA), a powerful ally of independent, community blood centers, will deliver the keynote address on Legislative Day, March 27, during America’s Blood Centers’ Annual Meeting in Washington, DC. Mr English, who has represented Pennsylvania’s 3rd District (formerly the 21st District) since 1995, will speak on the importance of adequate homeland security and health care for Americans and getting blood where it is needed during a state or national emergency. During the luncheon, ABC President Merlyn Sayers, MBBCh, PhD, will present Mr English with a plaque of appreciation for his years of support to independent, community blood centers and ABC. The Congressman, a native resident of Erie, Pennsylvania, has strong ties to an ABC member, Erie-based Community Blood Bank of Northwest Pennsylvania, and Executive Director Jacky Kocz.

For the fourth consecutive year, Allegheny College has received a record-breaking number of admissions applications, with more than 4,300 students applying for the 2007-08 class. “The fact that over 4,300 applicants are vying for a spot in an incoming class of 575 means that Allegheny is continuing to register both regionally and nationally as a ‘hot’ college,” said Vice President for Enrollment Scott Friedhoff. Applications continue to be reviewed, and all candidates will be notified of their status by April 1. Admitted students have a deadline of May 1 to guarantee a spot in the class.

While high school seniors nationwide are immersed in federal financial aid forms, many students at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, are immersed in their studies instead — thankful that their school of choice was able to grant more than $1 million worth of scholarships for the 2006-07 academic year. The $1 million total comprises a range of Penn State Behrend-specific scholarships, such as trustee matching scholarships, endowments and annual gifts; the Chancellor’s Scholarship Program, which recognizes academically gifted students regardless of need; study abroad monies; and a host of academic, leadership, merit, and need-based scholarships. In the 2005-06 academic year, Penn State Behrend students received more than $3.8 million in scholarship funding from all sources, including scholarship funding from the college, Penn State, and outside scholarship sources.
