On Friday, forty-four people took the oath and became US citizens in a ceremony held at the US Federal Court in Erie.

Pierre A Jones, Jamie D Pullium and Danitra A Johnson, all of Erie PA, were bound over to Hall County, Nebraska District Court for possession of 30 pounds of marijuana and nearly a pound of cocaine. All three people are charged with possession of cocaine with the intent to distribute and possession of marijuana with the intent to distribute. Arraignment is set for April 3. The street value of the drugs was about $40,000. The trio was traveling from Arizona to Pennsylvania. A conviction of the cocaine charge carries a sentence of up to 50 years in prison, and the marijuana charge is punishable by up to 20 years in prison.
Millcreek Community Hospital has purchase eleven Automatic External Defibrillators (AEDs) to equip Millcreek Township first responders with the latest life-saving devices. Four township police cruisers will carry the AEDs. Two fire inspectors and two fire response units from the Streets Department will also have AED units with them at all times. Kearsarge Fire Department will receive one of the units and two will be kept for emergencies at the township municipal building and police department.
US Representative Phil English (R-PA), a powerful ally of independent, community blood centers, will deliver the keynote address on Legislative Day, March 27, during America’s Blood Centers’ Annual Meeting in Washington, DC. Mr English, who has represented Pennsylvania’s 3rd District (formerly the 21st District) since 1995, will speak on the importance of adequate homeland security and health care for Americans and getting blood where it is needed during a state or national emergency. During the luncheon, ABC President Merlyn Sayers, MBBCh, PhD, will present Mr English with a plaque of appreciation for his years of support to independent, community blood centers and ABC. The Congressman, a native resident of Erie, Pennsylvania, has strong ties to an ABC member, Erie-based Community Blood Bank of Northwest Pennsylvania, and Executive Director Jacky Kocz.
For the fourth consecutive year, Allegheny College has received a record-breaking number of admissions applications, with more than 4,300 students applying for the 2007-08 class. “The fact that over 4,300 applicants are vying for a spot in an incoming class of 575 means that Allegheny is continuing to register both regionally and nationally as a ‘hot’ college,” said Vice President for Enrollment Scott Friedhoff. Applications continue to be reviewed, and all candidates will be notified of their status by April 1. Admitted students have a deadline of May 1 to guarantee a spot in the class.
While high school seniors nationwide are immersed in federal financial aid forms, many students at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, are immersed in their studies instead — thankful that their school of choice was able to grant more than $1 million worth of scholarships for the 2006-07 academic year. The $1 million total comprises a range of Penn State Behrend-specific scholarships, such as trustee matching scholarships, endowments and annual gifts; the Chancellor’s Scholarship Program, which recognizes academically gifted students regardless of need; study abroad monies; and a host of academic, leadership, merit, and need-based scholarships. In the 2005-06 academic year, Penn State Behrend students received more than $3.8 million in scholarship funding from all sources, including scholarship funding from the college, Penn State, and outside scholarship sources.
Sportsmen’s Athletic Club of Millcreek dues are now due.
The York Catholic girls’ basketball team won its second straight PIAA Class AA championship on Friday afternoon defeating Erie Villa Maria Academy 58-44.
The Indiana women’s water polo team beat Gannon 9-7.
The Pennsylvania Junior Wrestling State Championship Tournament is scheduled to be held in Erie in 2008 and again in 2009.

All An Act Theater Productions presents “The Odd Couple” with Larry Lewis and David W Mitchell. Performances will be held at Columbus Square, 652 West 17th Street in Erie, Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 pm through April 14 with Sunday matinee performances at 3 pm April 1 and 15 only. Tickets are $8 with student and senior tickets priced at $5.
The Classic Rock Dance, a fund raiser for the family of Erie soldier Katie Beckwith, with the Bryan Burton Band will be held on today at the Millcreek American Legion, 4109 West 12th Street in Erie (next to the Airport) starting at 8 pm. Tickets can be purchased at the door for a donation of $5 per person. Katie was injured when a roadside bomb detonated beside her Humvee in Iraq. She is presently being hospitalized at Fort Knox. The benefit is to raise money for travel expenses for her family to visit her.
Think you have what it takes to sing the National Anthem at a Double-A baseball game? Well here is your chance. The Erie SeaWolves announced their National Anthem tryouts to be held Sunday, March 25 at the Millcreek Mall. Tryouts will be held on the main stage located at the center of the mall. Registration begins at 1:30 pm and tryouts begin at 2 pm. Those interested in auditioning will perform the National Anthem for a panel of judges. Auditions must be performed a capella. The St Martins Center 9th annual Homeownership Expo will be held March 29 from 11:30 am - 6:30 pm at the Blasco Memorial Library. There will be information on homes, mortgage products, refinancing options, homes inspections, lead paint issues and more. Admission is free and open to everyone.
Mercyhurst College welcomes noted historian Dr Ralph Ketcham, Emeritus Professor of History, Political Science and Public Affairs at Syracuse University, who will address “Lincoln’s Union: Where it came from, and what it Meant,” on Thursday, March 29, at 8 pm in Walker Recital Hall.
