GAF Materials Corporation has closed their Erie roofing shingle plant. In January the company announced they were shuttering the 120 year old plant on the bayfront. Around 160 people were laid-off. It will be interesting to see what becomes of the property. It’s located on the bay directly to the left of the Erie Bayfront Convention Center.

It’s now been two weeks since Jenson has been featured in an article in the Erie newspaper.

The committee searching for a successor to Episcopal Diocese of Northwestern Pennsylvania Bishop Robert D Rowley Jr has announced a slate of three nominees. They are: the Very Rev James H Adams, 55, rector, St Peter’s Episcopal Church, Geneva, NY; the Rev Sean W Rowe, 32, rector, St John’s Episcopal Church, Franklin, PA and the Rev Canon Lexa H Shallcross, 60, rector, St Margaret’s Episcopal Church, Emmaus, PA. The electing convention will take place on May 19 at the Cathedral of Saint Paul in Erie. The diocese comprises about 4,800 Episcopalians worshipping in 36 congregations.

The Erie Art Museum will host a workshop on Chado: Japanese Tea Ceremony on April 7 beginning at 1 pm in the Erie Art Museum Annex, 423 State Street. The workshop will provide its participants with an opportunity to share a moment in friendship. Chado, the way of tea, is a way to explore the aesthetic system that informs the arts of Japan. As well as discovering Chado, the workshop will also investigate related cultural practices such as calligraphy, Zen meditation, and martial arts. Jay Hanes, PhD, an Art Education faculty member at Edinboro University will lead the workshop. Hanes has studied Japanese tea ceremony for almost 20 years and has offered numerous lectures, demonstrations, and workshops for all ages. He is also the owner of Great Water Ceramics, which specializes in Raku, a type of Japanese pottery. The workshop is opened to both teens and adults. The cost is $20 for Museum members, and $25 for non-members. Teachers are awarded Act 48 credit. Deadline to register is Tuesday, April 3, 2007. Thomas E Serena, MD, FACS of Erie has been named to the Clinical Advisory Board of Derma Sciences (OTCBB: DSCI). Dr Serena is Founder and Medical Director of the Penn North Centers for Advanced Wound Care. He is a professor at Gannon University in Erie, PA where he established a state of the art research program and developed an acute wound healing model. He is recognized internationally as an expert in the field of wound healing, having authored 70 published papers and given more than 100 invited lectures through out the world. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the Wound Healing Society.

Whether you want to earn three credits in three weeks or up to six credits in six weeks, you have the option to get it done this summer at Mercyhurst College. Applications are now being accepted for the enhanced summer program that includes a pre-summer session from May 22 to June 12; and a choice of summer sessions, June 3 to Aug 5 (Sundays only); or June 18 to Aug 7 (day and evening classes). Both graduate and undergraduate courses will be offered. Among the course selections are human resource management, social ethics, educational psychology, British classics, accounting, human growth and development and applied ethics. TechGenii announced that it will provide mobile alerts and mobile voting during the Eerie Horror Film Festival, October 10 through October 14, 2007, at the Erie Playhouse in Erie, PA. TechGenii will add mobile alerts throughout the festival so that horror fans will know film show times. TechGenii will also have a festival audience award, where horror fans can vote for their favorite horror film; the winner will be announced at midnight on Sunday, October 14, 2007.

Gannon and Mercyhurst combined to score 32 runs as the two rivals split a non-conference softball doubleheader. Mercyhurst posted a 15-5 victory in the opener before Gannon rebounded with a 10-2 win in the nightcap. In the nightcap, Jaclyn Corroto (Boardman, Ohio/Boardman) singled to right field with one out in the bottom of the sixth inning, breaking the all-time NCAA Division II record for longest hitting streak. The hit extended Corroto’s hitting streak to 36 games dating back to last season. Gannon, ranked 19th in NCAA Division II, moved its record to 16-6 with Thursday’s split. Mercyhurst moved its record to 8-11.

Jackie Baker’s second goal of the match with 6:23 remaining enabled West Chester to hold off a furious Gannon rally and post a 9-8 victory Thursday afternoon in a match-up of nationally-ranked women’s lacrosse teams at Gannon University Field. The Golden Rams are ranked second in NCAA Division II while the Lady Knights are sixth. Gannon dropped to 7-1 while West Chester remained undefeated at 5-0. The Lady Knights return to action Saturday, March 31 against defending NCAA Division II National Champion Adelphi. The match is scheduled for 7:00 pm at Mercyhurst College.

Young Erie Professionals (yep!) will host the 3rd Annual Generation-E Leadership Awards on March 30, at downtown Erie’s Avalon Hotel, to celebrate the achievements of this year’s twelve local honorees, who have impacted the Erie community both professionally and socially. The semi-formal event will kick off at 6:30 pm with cocktails in the Presque Isle Ballroom, and the dinner and award presentation will commence at 8 pm. An after-party will keep the evening going at 9:30 pm.

All An Act Theater Productions presents “The Odd Couple” with Larry Lewis and David W Mitchell. Performances will be held at Columbus Square, 652 West 17th Street in Erie, Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 pm through April 14 with Sunday matinee performances at 3 pm April 1 and 15 only. Tickets are $8 with student and senior tickets priced at $5.

Individuals interested in learning more about Mercyhurst North East are invited to an Open House on Saturday, March 31, from 10 am to noon, at the Michele and Tom Ridge Health and Safety Building, 16 West Division St, North East, PA. Those interested in MNE who are unable to attend one of the open houses are encouraged to call the admissions office at (814) 725-6144 to speak with an admissions counselor.

US Olympic figure skater Emily Hughes will perform at the Gliding Stars of Erie 7th annual ice show on March 31 at 7 pm at Mercyhurst College Ice Arena. Tickets are $5 advance, available by calling (814) 825-5555. Taylor Firth, a US national competitor, will also skate at the show, while Tennessee Back Porch performs. Proceeds benefit Gliding Stars, which provides assisted skating for persons challenged by disabilities.

The Asbury Woods Maple Festival will be held March 31 and April 1 from 11 am - 4 pm. Take a maple syrup tour and watch how maple syrup products are made using Native American and Pioneer methods. The Jamestown NY Savings Bank Ice Arena will play host to the Buffalo Sabres Alumni, who will play a benefit hockey game against the Labatt Blue All-Stars on Sunday April 1 with the face-off scheduled for 1 pm. The Sabres Alumni will hold an free autograph session between the first and second periods of the contest. In addition, a dinner and auction with the Sabres is slated for 2:45 pm in the Veranda Room. The Catholic Studies Speaker Series at Mercyhurst College will present noted author Mary Gordon on Wednesday, April 11, for a presentation titled, “Catholicism Through a Literary Lens.” She will speak at 8:15 pm in the Walker Recital Hall. The program is free and open to the public.

The Gannon University Villa Maria School of Nursing will host its annual community/health fair on Thursday, April 12 at the John E Horan Community Center, 730 Tacoma Road. The fair, titled “Prevention Adventure,” will run from 4-7 pm. It is free and open to the public; attendees need not live in the Horan Garden Apartments. For more information call (814) 871-5512.

Author and actor Peter Coyote will kick off the 2007 Literary Festival at Mercyhurst College with an appearance on Thursday, April 12, at 7:30 pm in the college’s Taylor Little Theatre. The festival, with a theme of “The Arts and the Counter-Culture: Then and Now,” continues April 19 with a visit by novelist Francine Prose and culminates April 25 with an event celebrating student creativity.

The Builders Association of Northwestern Pennsylvania 47th annual Home Show takes place April 12-15 at Family First Sports Park, 8155 Oliver Road.

Alto saxophone sensation Dave Pietro will be joined by four Brazilian musicians to present a special evening of Latin jazz at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, on Thursday, April 19. Music at Night tickets can be purchased at the door on April 19, in advance at the Reed Union Building main desk, or online. Ticket prices are $10 for adults, $8.50 for adults over 60, $5 for Penn State Behrend students, and $4 for kids under 16. In addition to the Music at Night performance, Dave Pietro’s Banda Brazil will perform at noon on Wednesday, April 18, also in McGarvey Commons. This one-hour concert, part of the Music at Noon series, is free and open to the public.

Literary nonfiction writer Marilyn Abildskov will close the 2006-07 Creative Writer’s Speaker Series at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, with a reading on Thursday, April 19. Abildskov will read from her works beginning at 6 pm in the Smith Chapel worship space. A 4:30 pm reception for her in the Smith Chapel living room will precede the reading; both are free and open to the public.

 

The Erie Micro Brew Festival presented by WQLN will be held April 21 at Union Station at 14th and French Streets. There will be 2 sampling sessions 1-4 pm and 5-8 pm. All proceeds support public broadcasting and all PLCB laws apply. Attendees must be 21. Tickets will be available soon at many Erie area locations. Scheduled to attend are: The BrewErie at Union Station, The Erie Brewing Company, Southern Tier Brewing, Pennsylvania Brewery, Voodoo Brewery, The Flying Bison, Ellicottville Brewing Company, North Country Brewing Company, Hereford and Hops, Sprague Farm and Brew Works, The Buffalo Brew Pub, Magic Hat Brewing and the East End Brewing Company.

John Kanzius and Dr Steven Curley will be holding an informational symposium on the Kanzius cancer treatment on April 28 at 7pm at the Mercyhurst College Mary D`Angelo Performing Arts Center. Tickets are $10. For more information call Mercyhurst at (814) 824-3000.
