After winter storms pummel the beaches and bring debris, your help is needed to get the beaches ready for summer. The 51st Annual Spring Clean Up at Presque Isle State Park is today from 9 am to 1 pm. Volunteers for the day will receive a commemorative patch, lunch, and a chance at some great door prizes. Meet at Rotary Pavilion located directly across from Beach 7. Signs are posted so you can’t miss it. Even through it will be 60 degrees and sunny, the water is still cool so dress appropriately. Presque Isle Downs and Casino will offer a unique purse structure at this year’s 25 days of Thoroughbred races. With purse funding available for the full year, the purses actually will pay out approximately 175 percent to horsemen on a structure of 75 percent to the winner, 40 percent to second, 20 percent to third, 15 percent, 10 percent, 5 percent, 4 percent, and 2 percent at the meet expected to begin on September 1. Expected this year is a Pennsylvania-bred day that will offer six stakes worth $90,000 to $100,000 each. The 25-day schedule also will include about eight $125,000 open stakes and one major stakes with a purse around $350,000.

The office building at 3410 West 12th Street was sold this week. Erie Insurance used it for a couple years. It was also formerly the home of Munn’s Furniture.

The Erie SeaWolves beat the Bowie Baysox 4-1 in an Eastern League baseball game played in front of 1,961 fans at Jerry Uht Park in downtown Erie PA. Starter Dallas Trahern threw an excellent game and SeaWolves closer Ian Ostlund struck out the side in the 9th for the save. The same two teams meet in Erie Saturday night at 6:35. Mercyhurst College won its heat with the fastest time of the day in the lightweight eight at the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association (SIRA) Championships. The finals are today at 2 pm. The lightweight eight will not be Mercyhurst’s only boat in action, as the heavyweight eight will be in action at precisely 11:37 am. Mercyhurst will be in lane one, followed by Ohio, Florida Tech, Purdue and St Joe’s.

The latest film to join the movie line-up is “Amazing Journeys.” Witness some of nature’s most incredible spectacles as millions of creatures embar on Amazing Journeys of survival. Film Director, George Casey, introduces audiences to six of natures truly uniquie phenomena. Along with the immense distances they travel, these species face many obstacles - obstacles that may change their migratory patters forever. Showtimes will be at 11am, 1pm, 3pm and 5pm beginning at the top of the hour. Tickets to the Erie Micro Brew Fest are sold out. All 1,000 of them. Holy cow. It takes place today at The Brewerie at Union Station.

The Erie Art Museum 84th Annual Spring Show opens today. This regional juried exhibit presents work from artists living within a 250-mile radius of Erie. It represents all media and showcases the most current and finest artwork created in the area.

LECOM (Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine) students will host the 2007 LECOM AIDS Summit on Saturday April 21 from 8 am to 4 pm at the College on West Grandview Blvd in Erie.

Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, will host an Admissions Open House for prospective undergraduate students on Saturday, April 21. The Open House begins at 10 am and continues through 1 pm. High school students and their families are invited to tour the campus and meet with representatives from the Sam and Irene Black School of Business, the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, School of Science, and School of Engineering. Faculty will be available to lead laboratory tours and demonstrations and answer questions about the college’s 32 baccalaureate majors. All events are free, but advance registration is requested and can be made online here.

The first Misery Bay Region SCCA autocross is Sunday, April 22 at Penn State Behrend in Erie PA. Registration is at 8 am with first car on course about 10:30 am.

Increasing global engagement at Mercyhurst College, inviting the world on to campus and sending faculty and students out into the wider world, provides the focus for this year’s Academic Celebration, slated for April 22-25 and titled “Mercyhurst: The International Arena.” Fifteen events are scheduled, and all are free and open to public.

The concert band and jazz ensemble at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, will perform their “American Originals” program on Monday, April 23. The concert begins at 8 pm in the McGarvey Commons of the Reed Union Building. Admission is free.

The annual Mr and Ms GU Contest, sponsored by Alpha Gamma Delta, will be held at 7:30 pm Monday April 23 in Gannon’s Hammermill Center, Peach Street and South Park Row. Five male students and six female students will vie for the titles of Mr and Ms GU. The students, who represent the university’s office of Student Living as well as a number of campus Greek organizations, will compete in a formal wear competition, a talent competition, and a question and answer session. Proceeds from the pageant-style contest will be donated to the Alpha Gamma Delta Foundation, the sorority’s international, philanthropic organization benefiting juvenile diabetes. Tickets cost $3 in advance, or $5 at the door. Tickets can be purchased at the university’s Waldron Campus Center, 124 West Seventh Street, or by calling (814) 871-7119. Last year’s event raised more than $2,000 in the fight against juvenile diabetes.

The State of Pennsylvania’s Authorized Trade Representatives from Australia, Canada, and South Africa will be in Erie on April 24 to meet with regional companies to discuss their export opportunities in respective markets. Erie PA based Free to Choose Media newest documentary titled “The Ultimate Resource” will premiere on HDNet Tuesday, April 24 at 10 pm. They travel to China, Bangladesh, Estonia, Ghana, and Peru and show examples of how people, when given the incentives and the tools, are proving they can apply their free choice, intelligence, imagination and spirit to dramatically advance their well-being and that of their families and communities. The program features 2006 Nobel Peace Prize winner Muhammad Yunus, Hernando de Soto, James Tooley and Johan Norberg.

Most classical musicians refer to the Three Bs as Bach, Beethoven, and Brahms, but an upcoming performance at Mercyhurst College will showcase another Three Bs: the beloved American composer Leonard Bernstein, Eugene Bozza of France, and the Italian Ferruccio Busoni. The program concludes this year’s Faculty Recital Series sponsored by the D’Angelo Department of Music. It will feature Geoff Wands on clarinet and Nathan Hess on piano and is scheduled for Thursday, April 26, at 8 pm in Walker Recital Hall. The program is free and open to the public.

John Kanzius and Dr Steven Curley will be holding an informational symposium on the Kanzius cancer treatment on April 28 at 7pm at the Mercyhurst College Mary D`Angelo Performing Arts Center. Tickets are $10. For more information call Mercyhurst at (814) 824-3000.

The Mercyhurst College Sportsmedicine Student Association will sponsor a 5K (3.1-mile) Run/Walk on Saturday, April 28, to benefit Connor Geddes, the 14-month-old son of Pete Geddes, Mercyhurst’s director of athletic maintenance, and his wife, Carrie. Born with a severe heart defect, Connor received a heart transplant at just 13 days old, and proceeds from the run will help defray some of Connor’s medical expenses. Registration is at 9 a.m. and the race begins at 10 at the athletic center. Cost is $15 to register, although runners are encouraged to seek sponsors. Student organizers are suggesting that runners ask for pledges of $5 to $10 per mile. Participants can register on the day of the race or in advance by contacting Sportsmedicine department director Brad Jacobson, bjacobson@mercyhurst.edu.

The Erie Art Museum Contemporary Music Series presents Rani Arbo and Daisy Mayhem in concert on Friday, May 4, 8 pm in the Erie Art Museum’s Annex, 20 East 5th Street. Tickets are $12 for non-members, $10 for Museum and JazzErie Members and $6 for students and seniors.

The Salvation Army in Erie will be celebrating National Salvation
Army week starting May 14. Throughout the week The Salvation Army will have several events ongoing to bring attention to the Erie Community of the many services and programs they provide. One of the major events that week will be the Kettles for Kids campaign. The recognizable Red Kettles will be located at numerous entrances of the Millcreek Mall. All proceeds from this fund-raising event stay in the Erie area, which will allow them to send less fortunate children to summer camps. The Salvation Army is looking for members of the community to help with this campaign by volunteering their time and standing with the Red Kettles. The Camp for Kids campaign kicks off on Monday, May 14 and continues through Saturday, May 19. They offer 2 separate shifts for individuals; they encourage large groups and organizations that have many volunteers to take a location for the entire day.
