GoErie has abandoned their registration process to view their site. They expect a readership increase of 40-50 percent.
Erie City Council issued a major announcement. They vowed a reduction in real estate taxes and a hiring freeze. They also will only meet twice a year from now on saying “The less council is is in session, the less damage we can inflict on the city.” And all council members will take Economics 101.
The Erie Regional Chamber and Growth Partnership announced that an unnamed company will relocate to Erie.
The School District of the City of Erie announced that future pay raises will be on a merit system and that teachers that can’t teach will be fired. A turnover of 25 percent of the workforce is expected. Because so much money will be saved, a large property tax cut is expected.
The Erie-Western Pennsylvania Port Authority announced that will break even this year instead of running a million dollar deficit as they have in most years.
Gannon University announced they have hired a director of public relations that will issue press releases and that their web site will include RSS feeds because Allegheny, Merchurst, Behrend and LECOM have included RSS feeds for years.
A person, who wishes to remain anonymous, said they have become friends with Nick Scott Sr. This is his first friend, not based on money or a business relationship, since elementary school.
PennDOT has placed signs around town with directional arrows and saying “This Way To The Beaches”.
Former Mercyhurst College President Dr William Garvey has apologized for anything he might have done in his past.
Edinboro University of Pennsylvania will now require an acceptable score on the SAT exam. Previously all they required of prospective students was the FAM (fog a mirror) test.

Clarence R Pierce, formerly of Erie PA, has been named CEO of Flint MI based Hamilton Community Health Network.
Louisville architect William Strudwick Arrasmith focused his work on Greyhound bus stations during their streamline era from 1937 to 1948, including the one in downtown Erie, Pa which is now the Boardwalk Bar. Frank E Wrenick of Cleveland, a retired attorney and current scholar on the streamline style of architecture, is the author of the 2006 book “The Streamline Era Greyhound Terminal.”
Mark Jeffers has been hired by Pittsburgh based Apangea Learning as a software engineer for the development division of its technology department. He was formerly a software design specialist at ArriveTech in Erie PA. ArriveTech is a full-service computer and information technology firm.
The Oasis Pub located at 3122 West Lake Road hopes to open by mid May. Presque Isle Nites, which I managed for a couple of years, formerly operated at the location.
Megan Metelenis scored with four seconds left to give defending NCAA Division II National Champion Adelphi a 12-11 victory over Gannon Saturday night in women’s lacrosse action. Gannon, ranked sixth in NCAA Division II, dropped to 7-2 with its second consecutive one-goal loss. The Lady Knights dropped a 9-8 decision to second-ranked West Chester last Thursday. Adelphi, ranked third in NCAA Division II, improved to 5-1.
The Mercyhurst men’s lacrosse team beat Notre Dame de Namur 12-4.
The Gannon softball team swept its opening Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) doubleheader against Hillsdale, winning a pair of five-inning games by scores of 12-4 and 13-2. In the process, Jaclyn Corroto (Boardman, Ohio/Boardman) extended her hitting streak to 38 games with a hit in both games.
Mercyhurst and Saginaw Valley State traded wins in a GLIAC doubleheader to start the weekend’s four-game series. Mercyhurst used a three-run inning to take a 5-1 win in game one before the Cardinals outlasted the Lakers 6-5 in 10 innings in game two.
Bob Learn Jr of Erie is doing appearances for the United States Bowling Congress as part of the organization’s speaker program. Learn is one of about 16 pros, former pros or top amateurs who go around promoting the sport for USBC, especially to junior bowlers. Learn said last year there were 42,000 players in high school bowling and this year there were 60,000.
Mark Fogel has spent the past two season as team manger of the University of Tennessee basketball team. He graduates this May has hopes to find a graduate assistant position. He has one heck of a player back in his high school days at Mercyhurst Prep. He was also a great pitcher for their baseball team and Legion Post 11. His father, Karl Fogel, coached the Mercyhurst College men’s basketball team for 8 years.
Bruce Hordusky (Erie, Pa/ Fort LeBoeuf) finished sixth in the 5,000 meters for the University of Kentucky track and field team at the Yellow Jacket Invitational at Georgia Tech.
The state championship will be on the line today when St Paul’s of Scranton squares off with Our Lady’s Christian School of Erie in the state Catholic Youth Organization junior high title game which will be held at 3 pm at Gannon University.

All An Act Theater Productions presents “The Odd Couple” with Larry Lewis and David W Mitchell. Performances will be held at Columbus Square, 652 West 17th Street in Erie, Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 pm through April 14 with Sunday matinee performances at 3 pm April 1 and 15 only. The Jamestown NY Savings Bank Ice Arena will play host to the Buffalo Sabres Alumni, who will play a benefit hockey game against the Labatt Blue All-Stars on Sunday April 1 with the face-off scheduled for 1 pm. The Sabres Alumni will hold an free autograph session between the first and second periods of the contest. In addition, a dinner and auction with the Sabres is slated for 2:45 pm in the Veranda Room. The Catholic Studies Speaker Series at Mercyhurst College will present noted author Mary Gordon on Wednesday, April 11, for a presentation titled, “Catholicism Through a Literary Lens.” She will speak at 8:15 pm in the Walker Recital Hall. The program is free and open to the public.
The Gannon University Villa Maria School of Nursing will host its annual community/health fair on Thursday, April 12 at the John E Horan Community Center, 730 Tacoma Road. Author and actor Peter Coyote will kick off the 2007 Literary Festival at Mercyhurst College with an appearance on Thursday, April 12, at 7:30 pm in the college’s Taylor Little Theatre. The festival, with a theme of “The Arts and the Counter-Culture: Then and Now,” continues April 19 with a visit by novelist Francine Prose and culminates April 25 with an event celebrating student creativity.
The Builders Association of Northwestern Pennsylvania 47th annual Home Show takes place April 12-15 at Family First Sports Park, 8155 Oliver Road.
Alto saxophone sensation Dave Pietro will be joined by four Brazilian musicians to present a special evening of Latin jazz at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, on Thursday, April 19. Music at Night tickets can be purchased at the door on April 19, in advance at the Reed Union Building main desk, or online. Ticket prices are $10 for adults, $8.50 for adults over 60, $5 for Penn State Behrend students, and $4 for kids under 16. In addition to the Music at Night performance, Dave Pietro’s Banda Brazil will perform at noon on Wednesday, April 18, also in McGarvey Commons. This one-hour concert, part of the Music at Noon series, is free and open to the public.
Literary nonfiction writer Marilyn Abildskov will close the 2006-07 Creative Writer’s Speaker Series at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, with a reading on Thursday, April 19. Abildskov will read from her works beginning at 6 pm in the Smith Chapel worship space. A 4:30 pm reception for her in the Smith Chapel living room will precede the reading; both are free and open to the public.

I agree - it's a sad commentary on Erie when most of these things make total sense and if true, would make Erie 10x better.
