Erie Cathedral Prep has a press conference scheduled for 1 pm today t announce that they will purchase 11 acres at 12th and Cherry Street that was the former Gunite/ EMI factory. The plan to transform the former industrial site into an athletic complex. And there goes 11 acres off the tax rolls
None of the over $1.2 million in grants from the City of Erie, the state or the federal government that went to the Invest Erie Invest Community Development Corporation went to buy former head of the organization Matt Selker friends on MySpace. He has none.
MTR Gaming Group, the owner of Presque Isle Downs and Casino in Erie, reported Monday that earnings before interest, taxes and depreciation at Binion’s In Las Vegas were a loss of $3.1 million during 2006, compared to a positive cash flow of $580,000 in 2005. For the quarter ended Dec 31, MTR had net income of $518,000, or 2 cents per share. The Erie slots casino opened on Feb 28.
Former WICU anchor Kiran Chetry along with John Roberts will debut as the new co-anchors of CNN’s flagship morning program American Morning on Monday, April 16. Chetry joined CNN in February. She served as a morning anchor and reporter for KXTV in Sacramento before joining Fox News in 2001.
Nearly 40 free tax preparation sites throughout Erie County will be open until Monday, April 16. The 2007 IRS deadline is Tuesday, April 17. The free tax preparation program promotes the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) campaign. Advocates claim that EITC has become the nation’s largest and most important anti-poverty program. If just 15 percent of those eligible for EITC file, Erie County would see an additional $14.5 million a year. Click here for more info.
Students who earn their associate degrees at Mercyhurst North East, Mercyhurst West or the Mercyhurst Corry Center and wish to complete their bachelor’s degree at the Erie Mercyhurst College campus will now be eligible for individual grants of up to $9,000 a year. The amount of the award is determined by each student’s grade point average. Transfer students who do not earn their degrees will receive a $5,000 grant. Adult students will receive the reduced adult tuition rate at the Erie campus and will also be awarded a $1,500 McAuley Scholarship.
The Mercyhurst College Center for Public Safety is training Erie County law enforcement officers through a series of one-day tactical training courses, April 23-27 and April 30-May 4, at the Erie County Public Safety Training Grounds, on Route 98 in Franklin Township. Ten one-day training sessions will be offered during the weeks of April 23-27 and April 30-May 4. Up to 20 officers can take each course, enabling up to 200 officers to receive this training. An informational meeting for police chiefs was held on March 22 at the training grounds to discuss what the sessions will cover. The classes will be led by Lt Les Fetterman and Sgt. Mark Sanders of the City of Erie Police Department, and former City of Erie Police Chief Charles Bowers. The training is provided at no cost to local police departments, and is open to any law enforcement officer in Erie County, regardless of rank or assignment. The Behrend women’s softball team swept the regular season series against rival Pitt-Bradford at the Behrend diamond on Tuesday, April 3. Behrend edged out the 3-2 victory in dramatic fashion when they quelled a late surge by Pitt-Bradford with a triple play. The women went on to win game two by the same score after Nikki Kaschauer (South Park/South Park) put the women on top with a blast over the left field wall. Behrend is now 11-8 on the season and 4-2 in the AMCC.
The Mercyhurst College men’s and women’s rowing teams will play host for the Mercyhurst Invitational at Findley Lake, New York on Saturday, April 7.

The Catholic Studies Speaker Series at Mercyhurst College will present noted author Mary Gordon on Wednesday, April 11, for a presentation titled, “Catholicism Through a Literary Lens.” She will speak at 8:15 pm in the Walker Recital Hall. The program is free and open to the public.
The Gannon University Villa Maria School of Nursing will host its annual community/health fair on Thursday, April 12 at the John E Horan Community Center, 730 Tacoma Road. Author and actor Peter Coyote will kick off the 2007 Literary Festival at Mercyhurst College with an appearance on Thursday, April 12, at 7:30 pm in the college’s Taylor Little Theatre. The festival, with a theme of “The Arts and the Counter-Culture: Then and Now,” continues April 19 with a visit by novelist Francine Prose and culminates April 25 with an event celebrating student creativity.
The Builders Association of Northwestern Pennsylvania 47th annual Home Show takes place April 12-15 at Family First Sports Park, 8155 Oliver Road.
Alto saxophone sensation Dave Pietro will be joined by four Brazilian musicians to present a special evening of Latin jazz at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, on Thursday, April 19. Music at Night tickets can be purchased at the door on April 19, in advance at the Reed Union Building main desk, or online. Ticket prices are $10 for adults, $8.50 for adults over 60, $5 for Penn State Behrend students, and $4 for kids under 16. In addition to the Music at Night performance, Dave Pietro’s Banda Brazil will perform at noon on Wednesday, April 18, also in McGarvey Commons. This one-hour concert, part of the Music at Noon series, is free and open to the public.
Literary nonfiction writer Marilyn Abildskov will close the 2006-07 Creative Writer’s Speaker Series at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, with a reading on Thursday, April 19. Abildskov will read from her works beginning at 6 pm in the Smith Chapel worship space. A 4:30 pm reception for her in the Smith Chapel living room will precede the reading; both are free and open to the public.
