The Northwest Pennsylvania Collegiate Academy USAD team leaves today for the National Academic Decathlon in Honolulu, Hawaii. Students will take Mathematics, Social Science, Language and Literature, and Art tests as well as competing in Speech and Interview. The competition concludes on Friday, April 27, with Economics, Music, and Science tests as well as the Super Quiz Relay. Teams have already completed the essay portion of the competition in an online event on April 12. At the national competition in Honolulu, teams from thirty-nine states will compete in three divisions, depending upon school size. Collegiate Academy is a Division III school. At last year’s national competition in San Antonio, Texas, Academy took second place.

PennDOT will begin resurfacing West 12th Street today from Greengarden to State.

Seton Hall University will bestow an honorary degree at the University’s 150th Commencement Exercises to Dr Antoine Garibaldi, president of Gannon University and chair of the Council of Independent Colleges.

Erie PA native Doug Whiteman was named The Associated Press in Ohio Staffer of the Year. The 45 year old Whiteman has overseen the daily broadcast news report for Ohio’s AP operation since 2005.

Jeff Larish knocked in six runs and fell a triple shy of the cycle to lead the Erie SeaWolves to an 11-6 win over the Bowie Baysox on Sunday. At one point during the game, they announced a $1 sale for most items concession stand. That was cool. Erie is back in action tonight on Buck Night at Jerry Uht Park against the Akron Aeros with a 6:35 first pitch. RHP Eddie Bonine (0-1, 3.27 ERA) makes his first start at home against LHP Scott Lewis (0-0, 1.86 ERA)

Mercyhurst senior Bryon Lindner scored a school-record eight goals and added an assist as the No 1 ranked men’s lacrosse team defeated No 7 Molloy 17-9 Sunday. The win sets up the Lakers’ second No 1 vs No 2 game of the year as Mercyhurst will host 2nd ranked New York Tech Saturday at 1 pm in the team’s final home game of the regular season.

The Gannon women’s water polo team beat Slippery Rock 5-2 in the third-place game of the Collegiate Water Polo Association’s Western Division Championships at the University of Michigan. Mercyhurst dropped a 8-3 final to Grove City in the fifth-place match. Sophomore Alicia Sutton (Erie McDowell) racked up six goals to help Washington and Jefferson close its season with a 13-2 victory over Penn State-Behrend in the 7th place match.

The Mercyhurst College lightweight eight remained undefeated and knocked off the defending national champions at the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association (SIRA) Championships. The lightweight eight edged past St. Joseph’s (PA) by just six inches with a time of 6:11.4, three-tenths faster than the Hawks. Jacksonville was two seconds off the pace in third, followed by Georgia Tech, Grand Valley, and Purdue. In the varsity eight, Mercyhurst finished 15th in a 20 boat field. Virginia was the overall champion. The Lakers 6:19.9 was good for third in the third level final after Dayton’s 6:16.3 and Tulane’s 6:18.0. Michigan State, Cincinnati and Tennessee rounded out the third level final.

Mashea Williams (Erie Mercyhurst Prep) received the Tom Caldwell “Unsung Hero” Award at the Penn State Lady Lion Banquet.

The Gannon football team wrapped up its first spring camp under new head coach Jim Kiernan with an intersquad scrimmage in front of 200 people at Gannon University Field. The defense posted a 71-61 victory over the offense. Gannon returns 37 letterwinners and 25 players who started at least two games last season.

The GMD Films comedy “Virgin Pockets” will be shooting at Lombardo’s Tavern at 915 W 21st St in Erie today, Monday April 23 from 5-10 pm. They are seeking anyone who would like to be an ‘Extra’ in the film, as well as Pool Players who would like to be featured. Beer will be provided by Erie Brewing Company. Be a part of Erie Film History and join them at Lombardo’s.

The concert band and jazz ensemble at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, will perform their “American Originals” program today, Monday, April 23. The concert begins at 8 pm in the McGarvey Commons of the Reed Union Building. Admission is free. Both groups perform under the direction of Gary Viebranz, the college’s director of instrumental music. On the program are selections by Aaron Copland, William Schumann, Clifton Williams, and Edwin Franko Goldman. The jazz ensemble will present a tribute to Maynard Ferguson featuring local trumpet player Jeff Gibbens as the guest soloist.

The annual Mr and Ms GU Contest, sponsored by Alpha Gamma Delta, will be held at 7:30 pm Monday April 23 in Gannon’s Hammermill Center, Peach Street and South Park Row. Five male students and six female students will vie for the titles of Mr and Ms GU. The students, who represent the university’s office of Student Living as well as a number of campus Greek organizations, will compete in a formal wear competition, a talent competition, and a question and answer session. Proceeds from the pageant-style contest will be donated to the Alpha Gamma Delta Foundation, the sorority’s international, philanthropic organization benefiting juvenile diabetes. Tickets cost $3 in advance, or $5 at the door. Tickets can be purchased at the university’s Waldron Campus Center, 124 West Seventh Street, or by calling (814) 871-7119. Last year’s event raised more than $2,000 in the fight against juvenile diabetes.

The State of Pennsylvania’s Authorized Trade Representatives from Australia, Canada, and South Africa will be in Erie on April 24 to meet with regional companies to discuss their export opportunities in respective markets. Breakfast/ Registration begins at 8:30 am. The Northwest PA Regional Planning and Development Commission is sponsoring the event.

The League of Women Voters and Congregational Action to Lift Lives are sponsoring a candidates forum on Tuesday April 24 at 7 pm at Erie East High School, 1001 Atkins Street.

Erie PA based Free to Choose Media newest documentary titled “The Ultimate Resource” will premiere on HDNet Tuesday, April 24 at 10 pm. They travel to China, Bangladesh, Estonia, Ghana, and Peru and show examples of how people, when given the incentives and the tools, are proving they can apply their free choice, intelligence, imagination and spirit to dramatically advance their well-being and that of their families and communities. The program features 2006 Nobel Peace Prize winner Muhammad Yunus, Hernando de Soto, James Tooley and Johan Norberg.

Most classical musicians refer to the Three Bs as Bach, Beethoven, and Brahms, but an upcoming performance at Mercyhurst College will showcase another Three Bs: the beloved American composer Leonard Bernstein, Eugene Bozza of France, and the Italian Ferruccio Busoni. The program concludes this year’s Faculty Recital Series sponsored by the D’Angelo Department of Music. It will feature Geoff Wands on clarinet and Nathan Hess on piano and is scheduled for Thursday, April 26, at 8 pm in Walker Recital Hall. The program is free and open to the public.

John Kanzius and Dr Steven Curley will be holding an informational symposium on the Kanzius cancer treatment on April 28 at 7pm at the Mercyhurst College Mary D`Angelo Performing Arts Center. Tickets are $10. For more information call Mercyhurst at (814) 824-3000.

The Mercyhurst College Sportsmedicine Student Association will sponsor a 5K (3.1-mile) Run/Walk on Saturday, April 28, to benefit Connor Geddes, the 14-month-old son of Pete Geddes, Mercyhurst’s director of athletic maintenance, and his wife, Carrie. Born with a severe heart defect, Connor received a heart transplant at just 13 days old, and proceeds from the run will help defray some of Connor’s medical expenses. Registration is at 9 a.m. and the race begins at 10 at the athletic center. Cost is $15 to register, although runners are encouraged to seek sponsors. Student organizers are suggesting that runners ask for pledges of $5 to $10 per mile. Participants can register on the day of the race or in advance by contacting Sportsmedicine department director Brad Jacobson, bjacobson@mercyhurst.edu.

KillerWolf Films will hold auditions for “Fist of the Vampire” on Saturday April 28 from 3-8 pm at the Erie Playhouse Rehearsal Hall, 919 State Street in Erie, Pa. Sides will be provided and it is preferred that all auditioners have no script material before the audition date and that all auditioners read cold. HOWEVER, if you want to prepare a monologue etc, please feel free to do so. The monologue could be anything you desire (comedy, horror, drama….whatever you like). Filming dates are Saturday July 14 through Sunday July 22, with a premier this fall.

The Erie Art Museum Contemporary Music Series presents Rani Arbo and Daisy Mayhem in concert on Friday, May 4, 8 pm in the Erie Art Museum’s Annex, 20 East 5th Street. Tickets are $12 for non-members, $10 for Museum and JazzErie Members and $6 for students and seniors.

The Seventh annual Black Bass Workshop, sponsored by Pennsylvania Bass Federation, the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission and a host of other agencies, and fishing and conservation groups, is set for May 4 at the Tom Ridge Environmental Center in Erie. Professional angler Joe Balog will present a program on the latest techniques for catching smallmouth Bass in Erie. A limited attendance fishing outing is scheduled slated for May 5. The Chautauqua-Lake Erie Wine Trail will host a “wine and cheese weekend” May 5-6, with 15 wineries participating.

The Salvation Army in Erie will be celebrating National Salvation
Army week starting May 14. Throughout the week The Salvation Army will have several events ongoing to bring attention to the Erie Community of the many services and programs they provide. One of the major events that week will be the Kettles for Kids campaign. The recognizable Red Kettles will be located at numerous entrances of the Millcreek Mall. All proceeds from this fund-raising event stay in the Erie area, which will allow them to send less fortunate children to summer camps. The Salvation Army is looking for members of the community to help with this campaign by volunteering their time and standing with the Red Kettles. The Camp for Kids campaign kicks off on Monday, May 14 and continues through Saturday, May 19. They offer 2 separate shifts for individuals; they encourage large groups and organizations that have many volunteers to take a location for the entire day.
