Erie PA News and Events for Wednesday May 23, 2007

The Commonwealth Court ruled that Allegheny County doesn’t have the authority to ban smoking in bars, restaurants and other indoor workplaces because the 1988 Clean Indoor Air Act pre-empts and supersedes local governments the right to impose stricter regulations. An Allegheny County Common Pleas Court Judge had put in place an injunction prohibiting the ban pending the appeal to Commonwealth Court.
Erie County is in the same boat. Erie County Council, going against the advise of it’s own lawyer, passed a smoking ban. It got shot down in court. Erie County is still planning to appeal. The only thing Erie County and Allegheny County are doing is putting money in the pockets of lawyers. We just elect idiots to write laws that have very little understanding of the law. Any smoking ban has to be done at the state level.

King Kyle Foust, the arrogant holier-than-thou Erie County Councilman, has formed an exploratory committee to determine if he will run for Congress. He seems to think just damaging Erie County isn’t enough. He wants to damage America. He can’t grasp the concept of why the county can’t ban smoking and he wants to run for Congress? Dear gawd.

Conneaut Lake Park will not be opening this year. The park is millions in debt and couldn’t raise the fuds to open. I might never open again.

Between 2005 and 2006, robberies with firearms were up 77 percent in Erie. The governor thinks Pennsylvania needs new gun laws because there is no way with the City of Erie going from over 200 police officers to 160 during that time had anything to do with the rise. Rendell is an idiot.

The New York Jets signed Erie PA native Eric Hicks. Kansas City released Hicks on May 1, three days after taking defensive lineman Claude McBride in the 2nd round of the NFL draft. Hicks, who turns 31 in June, ranks fifth on the Chiefs’ career sacks list with 40 1/2.

The Harrisburg Senators shocked the Erie SeaWolves in game one of a doubleheader Tuesday night with a pinch-hit, walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh to win 5-4. The SeaWolves lost game two 2-1. The series against the Senators continues on Wednesday night…6:05 first pitch. LHP Jon Connolly (2-2, 3.48 ERA) takes the mound for the ‘Wolves against LHP Mike Hinckley (3-3, 5.36 ERA). The Detroit Tigers plan to activate Jeremy Bonderman from the disabled list before Thursday’s game, and sent top prospect Andrew Miller back to Double-A Erie. Miller will pitch for the SeaWolves on Thursday in Harrisburg.

Amanda Blaskowski was named co-valedictorian of Cheboygan (MI) Area High School. The over achiever was all-state in basketball and softball. Blaskowski will be attending Gannon University in Erie PA on a basketball scholarship.

Thursday, May 24 in the Yehl Room of the Waldron Campus Center, 124 West Seventh Street. It also is targeted at veterans who already own a business, and is sponsored by the Gannon Small Business Development Center and Paulsen Productions. With a focus on veterans, the seminar is being held in recognition of Memorial Day so that those who served their country can learn more about the resources available to help them succeed in business. The event includes a free continental breakfast and free lunch. Pre-registration is encouraged. For more information or to register, call 814-871-7232 or 877-258-6648. For artists not old enough to participate in the mural project or unable to commit to a full-day class, Noyes also will teach College for Kids courses in hand-sewing and beading, craft painting, nature drawing and painting, and portrait drawing.
